Abstract

Marine debris in the waters has become a significant environmental issue, threatening the balance and function of coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangrove ecosystems. Poka Beach in the inner Ambon Bay is facing the accumulation of waste from local activities and external currents. To address this issue, the Community Service Program from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Pattimura University organised a coastal cleanup and mangrove rehabilitation at Poka Beach, involving students, the community, and related institutions. This program aims to raise awareness about the threat of marine debris and the role of mangroves in the sustainability of coastal and marine environments and ecosystems. The Community Service activities include site surveys, coordination with relevant parties, beach clean-up actions, and replanting mangrove seedlings. This activity successfully collected various marine debris accumulated at Poka Beach, such as bottles, food packaging, and household items. Amounting 180 kg of plastic waste was sent to the waste bank for recycling. As many as 150 mangrove seedlings were planted at a distance of 1 meter along the 200-meter stretch of Poka Beach. The sustainability of similar programs through education, conservation, community empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration must be carried out to change community behaviour in proper plastic waste management and create cleaner and healthier coastal and marine environments.

Abstract

The increasing waste problem is a major challenge for Indonesia, which mirrors the situation in many countries around the world. Indonesia's continuous population growth directly contributes to the increasing volume of waste produced every day, thus exacerbating the problem. The waste problem in Indonesia is a major concern, but public awareness is still lacking. Waste management education from an early age is needed to minimize its negative impacts. Community service activities at SDN 2 Pakuan Aji aim to improve students' understanding of waste sorting through education and direct practice. Students are taught to sort waste into organic and non-organic bins. The expected result is an increase in students' understanding and application of waste management. Subsequent activities can be focused on waste processing and recycling practices. This community service activity received a positive response from the school community and succeeded in fostering environmental awareness among students from an early age. In addition, this activity is also effective in increasing students' creativity through the process of recycling organic and non-organic waste materials.

Abstract

The improper management of household organic waste often leads to environmental pollution and health issues. This community service program aims to educate the residents of Rejo Basuki village on processing organic waste into liquid organic fertilizer (POC) using the Biostimulant Liquid (BL) method. This method was chosen for its ability to accelerate the decomposition of organic materials without requiring a lengthy fermentation process, offering a practical and efficient waste management solution. The program was conducted through lectures and hands-on training on POC and organic pesticide production, led by lecturers from the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA, University of Lampung. The results showed that BL-based POC significantly improved soil structure, increased nutrient availability, and enhanced plant resistance to pests and diseases. Additionally, participants gained valuable knowledge on sustainable and economically beneficial organic waste management practices. This innovation is expected to be widely adopted to support sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Competition between universities is getting tighter, both at national and international levels, covering academic aspects, reputation, innovation, and funding. To stay relevant in the digital era, universities must adapt and improve quality, utilizing social media as a means of communication and personal branding.
