Abstract

This research examines the social and cultural transformation that occurred in North Sumatra through the process of Islamization. The process of Islamization in this region has been underway since the 13th century, starting with the arrival of traders and scholars from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. This study uses a historical and sociological approach to analyze changes in the social structure, cultural practices, and value systems of North Sumatra society due to the acceptance and spread of Islam. The research results show that Islamization not only changes the religious aspects of society, but also influences patterns of social interaction, government systems, education, and local arts and culture. Significant changes include the establishment of Islamic educational institutions, the application of sharia law in several aspects of life, and the alignment of local traditions with Islamic teachings. This study also highlights the role of religious figures and Islamic institutions in directing this transformation. Thus, the process of Islamization in North Sumatra can be understood as a multifaceted phenomenon involving dynamic interactions between local traditions and Islamic values, resulting in a unique and diverse social and cultural identity. This research provides an important contribution to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of social and cultural change in the context of Islamization in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article reviews the development of Islamic kingdoms in Sumatera and the North Coast of Java from the pre-colonial to early colonial period. In Sumatera, kingdoms such as Samudera Pasai, Aceh Darussalam, and Palembang Darussalam played an important role in the spread of Islam through trade, education, and diplomacy. Samudera Pasai became the first center of trade and the spread of Islam in Indonesia, while Aceh Darussalam reached its peak of glory in the 16th and 17th centuries with its military strength and influence in Southeast Asia. Palembang Darussalam became an important trade center in southern Sumatera. On the North Coast of Java, kingdoms such as Demak, Cirebon, and Banten played a significant role in the spread of Islam. Demak, founded by Raden Patah, is known as the first Islamic kingdom in Java and played a role in overthrowing Majapahit. Cirebon developed as a religious and cultural center under Sunan Gunung Jati, while Banten became the dominant maritime and trade power in the Sunda Strait. This study uses a historical approach by analyzing chronicles, hikayat, and travel notes. The results show that the development of these Islamic kingdoms was influenced by political, economic, social, and cultural factors, including the influence of ulama, international trade, and interactions with foreign powers such as the Portuguese and the Dutch. In conclusion, the Islamic kingdoms in Sumatera and the North Coast of Java played a key role in the spread of Islam in the archipelago and in the political, economic, and cultural development of the region, providing a significant historical legacy for the development of Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of the arrival of Islam on the culture in Tanah Karo, which was previously dominated by animism and dynamism beliefs. Through the literature review method, this research analyzes changes in the belief system, customs, marriage patterns, education, and social dynamics after Islam was introduced in the region. The findings show that interactions between Islamic traders and scholars with the indigenous Karo community triggered a slow but significant process of acculturation. Traditional Karo culture underwent a transformation, adopting Islamic values in various aspects of life, including religious celebrations like Eid al-Fitr, as well as in arts, architecture, and language. Despite challenges in the acculturation process, the Karo people managed to maintain a balance between local traditions and Islamic values, creating a pluralistic and dynamic cultural identity. This study is important for understanding cultural and religious dynamics in a diverse society and provides insights into the cultural evolution in Tanah Karo.

Abstract

For the first time “action” was raised by Maurice Blondel, a contemporary French philosopher, as a philosophical problem. With actions carried out with “knowing” and “wanting” (actus humanus), so desired actions, the human will can move from limited reality to the Divine as unlimited reality. For Blondel, two types of will are used, volonte voulante (the willing will) and volonte voulue (the willed will). Volonte voulue is a type of human action whose object is empirical goods, because it is always possible to achieve them. Meanwhile volonte volulante is a type of action whose object concerns metaempirical reality and is therefore difficult and even impossible to achieve by the effort of the human will. This object can only be achieved by humans thanks to the actions of the Divine Himself, namely through God's own Revelation which comes to humans. Blondel's contribution to contemporary religious philosophy lies here, namely that he can rationally account for the faith of religious people that believers are made possible by the natural capacity in humans, namely the dynamism of the will to lead him to the possibility of supernatural revelation. However, philosophy here only provides a “possibility” not “certainty”. Meanwhile, “certainty” regarding the existence of special revelation (divine revelation based on the Holy Scriptures) remains a matter of theology as a matter of certainty of faith.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pattern of munasabah or the correlation between verses and chapters in the Qur’an, encompassing causal relationships, comparisons, contrasts, and thematic repetitions. Munasabah plays a crucial role in clarifying the logical and aesthetic connections between verses, helping readers gain a deeper understanding of the Qur’an. This study employs a qualitative, literature-based approach, referring to the theories of scholars such as As-Suyuthi, Nasr Abu Zaid, and Quraish Shihab. The findings reveal causal relationships in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 152 and 186, which emphasize the importance of remembering and being grateful to Allah as a consequence of His guidance. Comparative patterns are observed in Surah Al-Anfal verse 28 and Surah Al-Hadid verses 22-23, highlighting the contrast between worldly and eternal life. Contrasting patterns appear in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 258-259, illustrating the differences between believers and disbelievers. Meanwhile, thematic repetition is evident in Surah Ar-Rahman through the recurring phrase, "Then which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?" emphasizing gratitude. These findings confirm that munasabah in the Qur’an is not merely a rhetorical aspect but also holds significant theological and hermeneutical meaning in understanding the divine message.

Abstract

This article critically interprets the intersection between prophetic Islamic values and the symbolic hegemony of dynastic power in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. Despite procedural legality, the hereditary rule of the Tambunan family over two decades raises ethical and normative concerns. Through a qualitative case study involving document analysis, interviews, and field observation, this study finds that political communication in the region is heavily shaped by religious and cultural symbolism, which legitimizes power continuity while suppressing democratic deliberation and political regeneration. The research highlights that values such as rahmah (compassion), syura (consultation), and ?adl (justice) are often invoked rhetorically but rarely operationalized in governance practices. The study argues that Islamic political communication must transcend symbolic religiosity to promote openness, justice, and participatory leadership. Ultimately, this article offers a reinterpretation of Islamic political ethics as a critical framework to challenge symbolic domination and democratize local politics. It calls for a rethinking of democracy through Qur’anic values, exposing how structural stagnation is often disguised as political stability.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of prophetic communication values—?idq (honesty), sh?r? (deliberation), ?adl (justice), and ra?mah (compassion)—as a strategic approach to resolving local political conflicts in Labuhan Batu Selatan, North Sumatra. The research examines how these Islamic ethical principles are actualized by political actors, religious leaders, and civil society during the post-election period. Grounded in a qualitative case study design, the study draws on 12 in-depth interviews with key informants, including local government officials, clerics, NGO representatives, and community leaders. It also incorporates document analysis of local media coverage and election-related public statements. The study adopts a constructivist theoretical framework, emphasizing how actors interpret and enact moral-religious values within political discourse. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns in ethical and dialogical communication across multiple stakeholder groups. Findings reveal that while individual actors often internalize and express prophetic values in informal settings, formal political communication remains dominated by transactional and polarizing narratives. Religious leaders and civil society organizations serve as moral intermediaries, but their capacity is constrained by the lack of institutional mechanisms for dialogue and reconciliation. This study contributes both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, it offers a moral-ethical lens to the study of local political communication in pluralistic Muslim societies. Practically, it suggests that the integration of prophetic values into political discourse can promote ethical governance and strengthen social cohesion in post-electoral contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of da'wah rhetoric on the understanding of national insight among Muslim millennials in Indonesia. In the context of rising social polarization and digital disruption, da'wah serves not only as a means of conveying religious teachings but also as a strategic medium for instilling national values such as tolerance, unity, and national identity. Contemporary Islamic preaching delivered through digital media by figures like Ustadz Hanan Attaki and Habib Husein Ja’far demonstrates the integration of religious messages with inclusive national narratives. This research employs a qualitative approach using thematic analysis, based on in-depth interviews with young Muslim audiences who actively engage with digital da'wah content. The findings show that contextual and participatory rhetorical approaches can enhance understanding and acceptance of national insight among the millennial generation. Rhetoric that touches emotional aspects, aligns with social realities, and uses language relatable to youth proves more effective in conveying nationalistic values. These findings highlight the importance of collaboration among preachers, religious institutions, and state bodies in designing da'wah strategies that strengthen social cohesion and national resilience. In the digital era, da'wah must evolve into a transformative force that not only provides spiritual guidance but also fosters a comprehensive national consciousness.
