Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorders characterized by central obesity, elevated blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and increased triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that cardiovascular disease, a major manifestation of metabolic syndrome, was the leading cause of death globally. In Indonesia, the prevalence of metabolic diseases has also increased, particularly among children and adolescents, due to poor lifestyle habits. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of adolescents with metabolic syndrome. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design. Data were collected through anthropometric measurements, physical examinations, and blood sampling. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the average age of respondents was 16 years, the majority were female (53.3%), none had a history of drug use (100%), most did not smoke (56.7%), and most were in a pre-metabolic syndrome condition (90%). Additionally, 73.3% had normal blood pressure, 100% had normal random blood glucose levels, 60% had normal triglyceride levels, LDL cholesterol levels were normal, HDL cholesterol was normal in 93.3% of respondents, and 63.3% were categorized as underweight based on Body Mass Index (BMI).

Abstract

The eruption of Mount Semeru is one of the natural disasters that has an impact on environmental damage, property loss, and even loss of life. Survivors of the eruption of Mount Semeru are at risk of experiencing mental health problems, one of which is anxiety. Preschool children are an age group that is vulnerable to anxiety. The purpose of this case study is to see the picture of mental health problems in preschool children who are survivors of Semeru and to observe changes in signs of anxiety symptoms in children after being given mental nursing care consisting of deep breathing relaxation techniques, distraction, and education. Researchers used the SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) questionnaire to measure children's mental health problems and a knowledge questionnaire to measure the level of maternal knowledge in stimulating children's social development. The results of the study showed that 14% of children had normal difficulty scores, 29% had borderline scores, 57% had abnormal scores. For the difficulty score, 43% had borderline scores, and 57% had abnormal scores. Mental health nursing care can reduce anxiety in Semeru survivor children in Huntap and increase mothers' knowledge in providing social stimulation to children. Nurses have a role in improving mental health after a disaster through promotive, preventive and rehabilitative intervention.

Abstract

Problems experienced by early adolescents are often triggered by stressors related to physical, cognitive, and emotional changes, which may lead to low self-confidence and self-harming behaviors. These issues can cause psychological distress, thereby increasing the importance of family support. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between family social support and self-harm behavior among early adolescents in the agricultural region of Jember Regency. A correlational research design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study population consisted of early adolescents enrolled in public junior high schools (SMPN) in Jember, totaling 2,191 students. A sample of 376 students was selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Perceived Social Support from Family (PSS-Fa) questionnaire and the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI). Bivariate statistical analysis using Kendall’s tau-C revealed a significant relationship between family social support and self-harm behavior in early adolescents in the agricultural region of Jember (p = 0.002, r = -0.081). These findings indicate that family social support plays a crucial role in maintaining adolescents' emotional stability and preventing self-harm behaviors resulting from difficulties in adapting to stressors.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS is one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the health sector, alongside efforts to combat Malaria and Tuberculosis (TB), with a focus on controlling the spread of new cases. One of the measures to control transmission is ensuring that people living with HIV (PLWHA) adhere to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. Stigma refers to a negative attribute attached to an individual due to environmental influences. This stigma often leads to discrimination, which is defined as unjust treatment of individuals based on their actual or perceived HIV status or overall health condition. This study is a quantitative research using a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires distributed via Google Form. The sample consisted of all first-year students of the Nursing Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Catholic University od Santu Paulus Ruteng, totaling 129 participants. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with the inclusion criteria being: willingness to participate and being a first-year student preparing for clinical practice. A chi-square statistical test resulted in a p-value of 0.025, indicating a significant relationship between adolescent knowledge and stigma toward PLWHA. As future nurses, it is essential for nursing students to enhance their knowledge to avoid harboring negative stigma when providing care for PLWHA.

Abstract

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, commonly characterized by chronic airway inflammation and symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing of varying intensity. These symptoms often lead to sleep disturbances at night among asthma patients. Approximately 80% of the global population uses traditional medicine, including essential oils (EO), such as peppermint EO, to address primary health concerns. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The total sample consisted of 49 respondents, with 25 assigned to the intervention group and 24 to the control group. The results revealed a significant improvement in sleep quality between the pre-test and post-test in the intervention group (p-value = 0.000; α < 0.05), as well as a significant difference in sleep quality between the intervention and control groups post-intervention (p-value = 0.000; α < 0.05). Peppermint essential oil was found to positively influence the sleep quality of asthma patients and can therefore be considered a complementary approach to improving their sleep.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the critical public health issues prioritized in Indonesia’s national development agenda. This study aims to analyze the differences in household socioeconomic status and maternal nutritional knowledge among mothers of stunted and non-stunted toddlers in Tulang Bawang Tengah District. The total sample comprised 42 mothers of toddlers, including 21 mothers of stunted toddlers and 21 mothers of non-stunted toddlers. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive statistics and the Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that household income and maternal nutritional knowledge significantly contributed as indirect factors in the occurrence of stunting. There was a significant difference in household income between mothers of stunted and non-stunted toddlers. The level of nutritional knowledge among mothers of stunted toddlers was categorized as moderate. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance mothers’ curiosity and interest in learning more about food, nutrition, and signs of malnutrition in toddlers, in order to better prevent stunting.

Abstract

Hypertensive patients must adhere to their prescribed medications to maintain optimal health. Non-adherence to medication increases the risk of coronary heart disease, including congestive heart failure (CHF) and stroke. One of the key factors influencing consistent medication-taking behavior is self-efficacy. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and medication adherence among hypertensive patients in the Langke Rembong sub-district of Manggarai District. This research involved 134 hypertensive patients from two community health centers in the Langke Rembong sub-district. Data were collected using a self-efficacy questionnaire and the Probabilistic Medication Adherence Scale (ProMAS). Descriptive statistics and the Spearman rank correlation test were used for data analysis. The findings revealed a significant relationship between self-efficacy and medication adherence (p-value = 0.000, r = 0.325**). Therefore, to improve medication adherence, it is essential to enhance self-efficacy by increasing patients' motivation and health awareness.

Abstract

Inappropriate complementary feeding practices remain a prevalent issue in developing countries. Mothers need to possess both adequate knowledge and proper implementation of complementary feeding (MP-ASI) to support optimal child growth and development and to prevent disease and nutrient absorption disorders caused by inadequate complementary feeding. This study aims to explore mothers’ experiences in practicing complementary feeding. A qualitative research design using a descriptive phenomenological approach was employed to investigate the lived experiences of mothers regarding complementary feeding practices. The study identified three major themes: (1) maternal knowledge about complementary feeding, (2) emotional experiences during the practice of complementary feeding, and (3) mothers’ perceptions of the causes influencing complementary feeding practices. The findings suggest that maternal knowledge regarding complementary feeding remains relatively limited. Furthermore, mothers often experience feelings of worry, confusion, and stress while feeding their children, particularly when children refuse certain foods. These emotional responses are considered normal under such circumstances and are influenced by both direct and indirect factors affecting complementary feeding.

Abstract

Nutrition-sensitive factors, such as infections, are indirect contributors to inadequate nutrient absorption. This study aims to identify the nutrition-sensitive factors associated with stunted growth among under-five children attending a public health center due to infection-related problems. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 47 children who visited the public health center in July 2022. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, a microtoise, and the WHO growth chart. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-square test, while multivariate analysis employed binary logistic regression. The results showed that 35 children had normal growth, while 12 were stunted. The most common nursing diagnosis was ineffective airway clearance (36.2%). Among the nutrition-sensitive factors, household water supply was the most dominant factor associated with stunted growth (OR = 42.317; p = 0.038). Poor access to clean water, mediated by infection, can hinder the linear growth of children.
