Abstract

EFL students have a big problem called reluctance. Reluctance is students’ unwillingness or disinclination to speak and participate in classroom activities. This research attempts to determine how much each of the three factors affects students’ reluctance to speak English in classroom interactions and which is the most dominant. A descriptive quantitative method was used in this research. A questionnaire was used to collect data. This research analysed the data using version 25 of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, abbreviated as the SPSS program. The result showed that the weighted average of the proportions of the three factors was 2.66, 2.58, and 2.39, respectively, for psychological, language-related, and socio-cultural factors. It can be concluded that the psychological factor (lack of motivation) was the main factor that affected students’ reluctance to speak in English. Because of that, the students should maintain their high motivation to improve their speaking ability. Additionally, teachers should employ various strategies to create an engaging learning or activity environment that can motivate students.

Abstract

Reflective teaching practice is an approach that promotes teachers' professional development. Experts emphasize that reflection does not occur naturally in most teachers, but it is a skill acquired through learning. Therefore, promoting the reflective practice in an early stage is pivotal. This research reports the implementation of reflective teaching strategies at an initial teacher education program in the context of Aceh. It further explores the impact of the learning on the student teachers’ practical teaching during an internship program. This study employed a qualitative inquiry for the research method. Observation and in-depth interviews were used as methods of data collection. The prospective teachers learned to reflect through several strategies; diary writing, dialogic lecturer’s feedback, recording lesson through video, and peer observation. The finding showed that the learning on reflection developed some student teachers' awareness to reflect in their teaching practice during the internship program. They assessed their strength and weaknesses in teaching by self-assessing during and after the learning took place, examining students’ involvement during classroom activities, asking students’ thoughts and feelings about the learning, and asking the supervisor’s feedback. Moreover, efforts they carried out to improve their teaching practice involved practicing teaching at home, finding out supporting materials, watching teaching videos on YouTube, and asking fellow novice teachers to conduct peer monitoring. The reflective teaching activities built their confidence in teaching, assisted them to deals with problems they encountered in real classrooms, and stimulated their creative ideas in facilitating the learning. Thus, reflective teaching practice is required to be embedded in initial teacher training curricula to generate reflective practitioners.

Abstract

Lecturers can effectively teach students to write expository texts, specifically job application letters, using a genre-based approach. This instructional method enhances students' comprehension of text types, the schematic structure of the text, linguistic characteristics, and the social function associated with this text type. This study aims to investigate the application of the genre-based approach in teaching expository writing with a focus on job application letters. The research participants consist of management students at a private university in Karawang who are enrolled in English for business management. The research design adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, incorporating observation of the exposition text learning process with a job application letter, interviews to appraise students' perceptions, and analysis of documentation, specifically the students' writing samples. The findings and subsequent discussion reveal the lecturer's commitment to effectively implementing each stage of the genre-based approach in teaching expository writing. The lecture demonstrates meticulous planning by developing a syllabus, lesson plans, and targeted instructional strategies. Additionally, the interview data indicates that students require sufficient time and guidance to master the writing of job application letters within the context of expository texts. However, the students ultimately display proficient writing skills in composing well-structured expository texts in English. Furthermore, the analysis of the documentation, comprising the students' writing samples, corroborates the successful outcomes of the job application letter compositions, which were achieved through iterative feedback provided by the lecturer. In conclusion, this research highlights the lecturer's successful implementation of the genre-based approach in student learning.
