Abstract

The phenomenon of online learning has grown at a rapid pace over the years. Despite its benefits, online learning also comes with certain drawbacks, such as a shortage of access to reliable network connectivity, digital literacy, and socializing. The current study aims to explore the perceptions of parents regarding the challenges of distance learning faced by their children in Indonesia. Questionnaires via google forms and interviews were used to diagnose the parents’ responses to handicaps that existed during distance learning. The participants comprised 30 parents whose children joined online schooling. The findings revealed that parents experienced various kinds of obstacles in their efforts to help their children learn remotely such as (1) personal barriers (2) technical barriers (3) logistical barriers, and (4) financial barriers. The trend toward online learning is projected to continue and grow in the coming years with more dialogical, synchronic, pluralist, open, and accessible to various groups.

Abstract

Technological advancements are profoundly impacting education, particularly in the selection of learning media. Appropriate utilization of learning media can make learning easier and more effective. Language acquisition in children typically begins when they first begin to speak words independently. However, autistic children may struggle with acquiring new languages and demonstrating school readiness skills such as social, emotional, language, literacy, and executive functioning due to their individual social, communication, and behavioral presentations. This research aims to determine the implementation of YouTube as a medium for toddlers with autistic spectrum disorder in second language acquisition. The method used is qualitative with the instruments used are questionnaire, observation, and interview. The research subject was 5 autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) students at the Smart Kids School. The researchers did a questionnaire with 5 respondents as the parents of kindergarten students. The researchers also interviewed the teachers of the kindergarten. There were 5 questions to answer, which were described based on the respondents’ opinions. The research results show the process of implementing YouTube in English learning for autistic spectrum disorder students is appropriate and advantageous. Because YouTube provides exciting videos for children; they can hear the words spoken and see their physical appearance, which can aid comprehension. The children often imitate the dialogue of the characters they see on screen and their behavior. In addition, this research also showed that it is crucial for parents and teachers to monitor the content children watch on YouTube.

Abstract

This comprehensive review explores the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language assessment and its transformative potential. Language assessment plays a vital role in education, employment, and societal integration. Language assessment has traditionally relied on human evaluators, who assess and score language performance based on standardized criteria. However, this manual assessment approach has limitations, including subjectivity, inter-rater variability, and scalability issues. With the rapid advancements in AI technologies, language assessment has experienced significant changes, offering more accurate, efficient, and innovative evaluation methods. The method used in this study is systematic review which critically examines the application of AI in language assessment, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and future prospects. The review covers various aspects, including automated scoring and evaluation, intelligent tutoring systems, natural language processing, advantages and benefits, challenges and considerations, and future directions. By harnessing the use of AI, language assessment can achieve unprecedented levels of objectivity, scalability, and personalization, while addressing ethical considerations. This review contributes to the understanding of AI's impact on language

Abstract

This study utilized a narrative inquiry to investigate code switching in EFL teachers’ classroom and their experiences with it. By applying this approach, the study aimed to comprehend the complex nature of code switching in language classrooms through the perspectives of the teachers who utilize it. Ten EFL teachers were selected on the purpose for the study, and data was gathered through semi-structure interviews. The results reveal that EFL teachers varied in their frequency of code switching, with some preferring to use the target language as much as possible, while others employed code switching to enhance student comprehension. Code switching was more prevalent when teaching students with lower language proficiency to facilitate understanding and communication. It was also employed to create a comfortable learning environment, clarify meaning, and address communication breakdowns. However, some teachers were concerned that excessive code switching could hinder students’ language development, and frequent code switching could negatively impact language development. These findings provide valuable perspectives on code switching in EFL classroom, informing language teaching practices and curriculum development. In summary, this study highlights the complex nature of code switching in language classrooms and emphasize the importance of balancing its usage to promote students’ proficiency in the target language.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Multi-modal Language Learning Environments (MLLEs) in enhancing the language proficiency of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Employing a mixed-methods approach, quantitative analysis of pre-test and post-test scores is combined with qualitative insights drawn from interviews, questionnaires, and observations. Quantitative findings reveal significant improvements across various language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with enhancements in mean scores ranging from 10 to 15 points. Decreases in standard deviations suggest increased consistency in post-intervention performance. The t-test results underscore the statistical significance of the enhancements, with highly significant p-values for listening (p < 0.001), significant p-values for speaking (p < 0.01), and marginally significant p-values for reading (p < 0.05). Qualitative thematic analysis sheds light on the immersive and engaging nature of MLLEs, fostering interactive learning experiences and bolstering participants' confidence, motivation, and collaborative skills. However, challenges in reading and writing proficiency underscore the need for tailored content delivery and interventions. The synthesis of quantitative and qualitative findings validates the success of MLLEs in elevating language proficiency. The study's outcomes have substantial implications for educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers aiming to address diverse language learning needs. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of MLLEs in improving EFL students' language proficiency and provides valuable insights for future educational practices. Moving forward, further research can explore additional factors influencing the success of MLLEs.
