Abstract

The rabies outbreaks of Indonesia in these two decades tends to spread faster to other islands/regions. Trade trafficking and people's habits of carrying dogs between islands are contributing factor that triggers rabies cases in Provinces previously free of rabies. This study aims to qualitative risk assessment entry and spread of rabies in dogs into Sorong City of West Papua Province. Methods of collecting primary data obtained from expert opinions, questionnaires, interviews, and direct observation in the field. Secondary data is taken through search of scientific publications, surveillance results, unpublished data in the form of reports, and documents from authorized agencies. The results of study showed that release assessment was high, the incidence of rabies in dogs was 52%, and 180 cases of rabies in humans (lyssa) in Sulawesi, Maluku and North Maluku. The exposure assessment was high based on the presence of rabies transmite animal (RTA) traffic from endemic areas, 58% dogs, 38% cats, and 4% apes from Java 68% (Surabaya 50%, Jakarta 18%), Sulawesi 10% (Manado and Bitung), Maluku 14% (Ambon) and North Maluku 8% (Ternate). The consequence assessment is high because there is a single impact that is categorized as nationally significant. The estimated risk of getting into rabies is high. The potential pathways used in RTA traffic to Sorong City is by sea at 89.3% and air at 10.7%. The results of the study concluded that the qualitative risk assessment of entry and spread of rabies in dogs to the Sorong City of West Papua Province was high. All risk assessments have low uncertainty.

Abstract

A. galli infection caused high economic losses and decreased the amount and quality of egg production. The existence of anthelmintic resistance lead to the development of research on alternative treatments for A. galli. This aim of the research was to know LC50 of Areca catechu on infestation of A. galli. In this research A. galli was taken from a chicken slaughterhouse in Terban, Yogyakarta, and was divided into 8 groups for in vitro research. Group I was treated with an 10% infusion of A. catechu; group II was treated with 12.5% infusion of A. catechu; group III was treated with a 15% infusion of A. catechu; group IV was treated with a 17.5% infusion of A. catechu; group V was treated with 20% infusion of A. catechu; group VI was treated with a 22.5% infusion of A. catechu; group VII was treated with 25% A. catechu infusion and group VIII as negative control (0.9% NaCl). A. galli mortality is recorded every one hour until worm mortality is 100%. The results were then analyzed using the Reed and Muench method. Based on the in vitro test the infusion of Areca catechu against Ascaridia galli can cause death in worms with an LC 50 calculation of 21. 18%.

Abstract

The phytochemical components of avocado seeds (Persea americana Mill) consist of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins, so that they have the potential as antibacterials. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of Persea americana Mill extract to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus through inhibition zone observation and the ability to accelerate wound healing infected by S. aureus through observation of wound closure and cytopathology.  Persea americana Mill were extracted using maceration method with 70% ethanol. The activities of this extract were tested by diffusion disc agar method. Biomedical tests were carried out on anaestetic Wistar rats whose were S. aureus infected wounds  and treated with Persea Americana Mill extract. Based on the results of the antimicrobial test, avocado seed extract has a inhibitory effect on the growth of S. aureus at a concentration of 6.25% and best at a concentration of 100% compared to the control. Tests in experimental rats showed the effect of wound healing on the 2rd day after giving the extract Persea americana Mill ointment, faster than the control, which was need 4 days of wound closure. Cytopathology results showed that leukocyte activity was more prominent in rats treated with avocado seed extract compared to control rats. Avocado seeds as byproducts have the potential to be new herbal medicines that can be used as antimicrobials of S. aureus which have been confirmed to be resistant to various antibiotics.

Abstract

Decreasing egg production is an initial symptom of various diseases that infect commercial layer chickens. Diagnosis of diseases causing the decrease in egg production without high mortality rate is often thought to be caused by other poultry diseases because of the many similarities in manifestation between one disease and another. Avian influenza is a zoonotic infectious disease in poultry that can lead to high economic losses. This study aims to determine the contribution of avian influenza virus (AIV) infection to commercial laying hens showing symptoms of decreased production. The samples were oropharyngeal swabs of commercial laying hens which had symptoms of decreased production at productive age. Laboratory tests were carried out by histopathological examination, detection and identification of AIV with real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and isolation with the viral culture technique on fertile chicken eggs. The results showed that there was type A AIV infection based on the qRT-PCR (matrix) test, but the subtypes were not identified (H5, H7, H9). The results of the isolation of the virus in the fertile chicken eggs showed embryonic death in which all embryonic organs show hemorrhages. Allantoic fluid does not agglutinate chicken red blood cells. Histopathological features of the pathognomonic lesions in lungs infected with AIV were severe congestion and hemorrhages. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that there was a contribution of type A AIV infection. Early diagnosis of AIV could determine more appropriate actions, including control, prevention and eradication.

Abstract

Reticulated python (M. reticulatus) Java and Kalimantan locality highly demand as pet animal. Blood profile has an important role on animal health status. This research was aim to study the blood profile comparison of Java and Kalimantan M. reticulatus. Ten blood samples of Java M. reticulatus and 10 samples of Kalimantan M. reticulatus were used in this study. As much as 1 ml blood sample was collected from ventral coccygeal vein of adult healthy M. reticulatus. Blood sample put into tube with EDTA then analized at Internal Department Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM. Based on blood samples analize results, adult healthy Java M. reticulatus shows the higher value on parameters of erytrocyte, leucocyte, PCV, MCH, heterophyl, limphocyte and monocyte, while haemoglobin, TPP, MCV, MCHC, azurofil and monosit were lower than Kalimantan M. reticulatus. There were no significant differences (P>0,05) between blood profile of Java and Kalimantan M. reticulatus. It could be concluded that blood profile of Java and Kalimantan M. reticulatus is not different.
