Abstract

Background: The free meal program (Makan Bergizi Gratis) in senior high schools aims to enhance student well-being by providing adequate nutritional intake. However, its implementation requires comprehensive evaluation, particularly regarding coordination mechanisms and the fulfillment of hormonal nutritional needs critical for adolescent development. This study analyzes the free meal program through the lens of the Utilization-Focused Evaluation (UFE) approach, with a specific focus on students' hormonal nutrition. Method: This research employed a mixed-methods design, combining qualitative descriptive analysis with a case study approach and quantitative anthropometric data. Qualitative data were collected through interviews and observations involving eight informants, including teachers and students. Data analysis involved data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, using both methodological and source triangulation to ensure data validity. Results: The findings indicate that: (1) Program coordination is suboptimal, with food delivery not consistently punctual. (2) The meals provided lack sufficient variety, particularly in delivering essential proteins and healthy fats necessary for hormonal balance during adolescence. (3) Student and parental involvement in menu selection and program evaluation remains limited. (4) Feedback to students is provided periodically. Implications: This study recommends strengthening inter-stakeholder coordination, diversifying the nutritional content of menus, and involving both students and parents in program evaluation. Sustainable funding is also identified as a critical factor for ensuring the program's long-term effectiveness. Novelty: This study offers novel insights into the application of Utilization-Focused Evaluation (UFE) in assessing free meal programs and highlights the importance of hormonal nutrition in supporting adolescent development.

Abstract

Background: Previous bibliometric analyses tend to mix SE with reproductive health issues or are geographically limited. This study aims to fill this gap through exclusive bibliometric mapping of the topic of SE. Method: Bibliometric approach with quantitative network analysis design. Data were obtained from Google Scholar via Publish or Perish with a title-based search strategy using the phrase “Sexual Education”, resulting in 810 scientific articles in the range of 2000-2025. The analysis was conducted using VOSviewer through co-occurrence term mapping and overlay visualization for temporal analysis. Result: This study identified six gaps in SE research: (1) disparities in SE research in the policy domain and inclusion of vulnerable groups such as people with intellectual disabilities; (2) segmentation between protectionist (e.g., child sexual abuse) and pedagogical (CSE, curriculum) approaches; (3) marginalization of qualitative methods and systematic reviews; (4) narrow gender focus, limited to women's issues; (5) lack of studies of barriers and access in CSE implementation; and (6) lack of exploration of the effectiveness of SE programs in adolescent populations. Implication: The study results have practical implications for policy, education, and research, with key recommendations being the inclusive integration of CSE into the curriculum, cross-sector collaboration for evidence-based SE programs, and the use of bibliometric findings to fill identified research gaps. Novelty: Contributing to mapping SE research trends through bibliometrics, focusing on the analysis of key terms and their development, different from previous studies that expanded to other topics such as reproductive health and had certain population segmentations.

Abstract

Background: This narrative review examines how melatonin enhances reproductive health functions. Melatonin has established itself as a multifaceted neurohormone with pivotal roles in female reproductive health. Through its potent antioxidant properties, melatonin protects oocytes and orchestrates hormonal regulation and ovarian function, with melatonin receptors strategically located in key reproductive tissues, including ovarian granulosa and luteal cells. Method: This narrative review examines how melatonin preserves and enhances female fertility by analyzing clinical outcomes and molecular pathways. It compiles research on the effects of melatonin on ovarian function, oocyte quality, hormone regulation, and assisted reproductive technologies from major databases published between 2015 and 2025. The study consistently shows how melatonin works and its potential benefits, offering broad insights without strict limits. Result: Melatonin operates through multiple receptor-mediated pathways to regulate reproductive functions. Clinical evidence shows melatonin supplementation improves assisted reproductive technology (ART)’s success rates by enhancing oocyte maturation and embryo quality, restoring menstrual regularity in PCOS patients, and protecting reproductive tissues from oxidative stress-induced damage. Implication: These findings support melatonin's therapeutic potential in assisted reproductive technologies and treating reproductive disorders. Healthcare providers should consider melatonin supplementation as an adjuvant therapy for women undergoing fertility treatments or experiencing reproductive dysfunction while establishing standardized protocols for optimal dosing and timing. Novelty: This comprehensive review reveals melatonin's multifaceted role as a fertility regulator, providing molecular insights into its therapeutic mechanisms and clinical applications in women's reproductive health across the reproductive lifespan
