Abstract

Background: Smoking is well known risk factors that promote periodontal tissue destruction. Both smoking and periodontitis nowadays consider as a common health problem globally. As smoking habit evolution, electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) have emerged as an alternative to cigarettes. The number of E-cigs smoker or vaping users around the world are increasing. However, information about the effect of E-cigs on periodontium is very lacking lately. The study aimed to compare the effect of cigarette consumption on periodontium by clinical health parameters between all smokers’ type.Method: This review follows the PRISMA guidelines. Document search was carried out in PubMed, Ebsco Host and Scopus using the keywords or phrases: (periodontal health) AND (((((electronic cigarette) OR Vaping) OR e-cig) OR electronic nicotine delivery system) OR nicotine delivery system). A total of 137 articles were obtained after the duplicates were eliminated and five articles were considered met the eligibility criteria for systematic review. Result: This review found that E-cigs are less harmful compared to tobacco cigarettes, with comparable result between E-cigs smoker and non-smoker on some clinical periodontal health parameters for mean probing depth, clinical attachment loss, score of plaque index (PI) and papillary bleeding index (PBI) as well. In contrast, the study reveals that bleeding on probing level was higher among non-smokers than smokers. Conclusion: E-cigs are less harmful compared to tobacco cigarettes on some clinical periodontal health parameters. This result should be interpreted with caution because there is currently insufficient data to investigate the effect of E-cigs on periodontal health through clinical parameters.

Abstract

Background : Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are commonly found in commercial sex workers (CSWs) due to lack of knowledge and bad behavior in sexual intercourse. STI does not only cause symptoms in the genital area but also lesions in the oral cavity. Method : This research was an analytical survey with cross sectional approach. Samples were 110 CSWs selected by simple random sampling. Chi-Square test was used to see the difference in the influence of the level of knowledge and sexual behavior on the incidence of oral cavity lesions. Result: Oral cavity lesions related to STIs were found in 44 cases, including suspect oral candidiasis, ulcers, suspect linear gingival erythematous (LGE), Suspect Kaposi Sarcoma and Oral Hairy Leukoplakia. Lesions were found in 43.9% respondents with low knowledge level and 37.7% in good knowledge level. Chi-Square test obtained p value of 0.328 (p> 0.05) showed that there was no difference between the knowledge level and the occurrence of lesions. Lesions were found 94.1% in respondents with bad sexual behavior and 15.8% in respondents with good sexual behaviour. Chi-Square test obtained p value of 0.00 (p> 0.05) which means that there are significant differences between good sexual behavior respondents and bad sexual behavior respondents towards the presence of lesions. Conclusion: The level of knowledge was not a risk factor for oral lesions, whereas bad sexual behavior was a risk factor for oral cavity lesions.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on epidemiological data, the periodontitis prevalence in Indonesia reached 96.58%. Periodontitis is a periodontal disease caused by specific microorganisms causing attachment loss, alveolar bone resorption, and periodontal pocket. The pocket which is more than 6 mm couldn’t be carried out using standard care. Therefore bone grafting is needed to fix the bone defect. Cowhide Gelatin nanoparticle (GNPs) combined with Titanium-Prepared Platelet-Rich Fibrin (T-PRF) is an innovative healing of periodontitis. Objective: To review the potential of cowhide gelatin nanoparticles combined with titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin (T-PRF) as an innovation in the healing of periodontitis defects. Literature review: Cowhide GNPs are the main ingredients for the bone replacement, which are nano-sized, biocompatible, bioactive, osteoconductive, non-toxic, and have a porous structure that supports the drug-delivery process. T-PRF contains platelets, fibrin, growth factors that can stimulate bone regeneration. Discussion: GNPs support the attachment and proliferation of osteoblast cells and the formation of mineralized bone matrix. The contents of T-PRF, which are fibrin, platelets, and growth factors, one of TGF-β1 will produce bone formation and periodontal healing in the large number. Moreover, T-PRF has leukocyte-fibrin, which may give an antibacterial effect. Thus, GNPs combined with T-PRF have more potent properties that support each other in carrying out their functions to stimulate the healing process. Conclusion: The combination of cowhide gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) and titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin (T-PRF) has the potential to be effective in bone regeneration in periodontitis defects.
