Abstract

This community service activity aims to describe the implementation of a modern crossword puzzle game as a learning medium to stimulate the literacy skills of 5-6-year-old children at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Minasaupa Kindergarten. The activity was implemented using a service learning approach, involving five 5-6-year-old children as participants. Data were collected through observation sheets covering indicators of logical thinking, problem-solving, pattern recognition, vocabulary comprehension, and patience. Data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that most children achieved the Very Well Developed (BSB) category for indicators of logical thinking, problem-solving, pattern recognition, and vocabulary comprehension, while all children demonstrated good development in the patience indicator. These findings indicate that modern crossword puzzles can be used as a learning medium to support the development of early childhood literacy skills through active and enjoyable learning activities.

Abstract

Utilization of yard land thru the cultivation of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) has become one of the strategies for family health independence. However, the community of RW 29, Desa Murangan VIII, Kelurahan Triharjo, Kecamatan Sleman is facing the problem of declining utilization of traditional medicinal plants despite the availability of land with potential for development. Therefore, this program aims to improve health literacy and community independence thru the development of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). The method used is health education and community empowerment based on the environment with a participatory approach, involving students and the Family Welfare Program (PKK). Activities were carried out thru observation, seed procurement, land clearing, planting, and socializing the benefits of TOGA using brochures. The results of the activities show that the vacant land was successfully transformed into a TOGA garden as a center for medicinal plants. In addition, this program raises public awareness about the importance of utilizing medicinal plants in maintaining community health. Thus, the development of TOGA not only supports the independence of public health but also has the potential to increase the productivity of the local community.

Abstract

Ensuring health, safety, and adequate nutrition is essential for optimal early childhood development. This community service program aimed to strengthen children’s and caregivers’ understanding of healthy behavior, everyday safety, and balanced nutrition through a service-learning approach at the UIN Alauddin Makassar Child Growth and Development Center. Conducted from May to June 2025, the program involved 20 undergraduate students, 2 caregivers, and 15 children. It comprised three stages: pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation. Educational activities included posters, storytelling, guided meal practice, personal-hygiene checks, and height and weight measurement. Outcomes were evaluated qualitatively through observation of participants’ responses, children’s ability to retell key messages, and reflection involving students, lecturers, and caregivers. The children participated actively and were able to restate the main messages in age-appropriate language. Caregivers also gained practical guidance for reinforcing healthy, safe, and nutritionally balanced routines. The program demonstrates that service learning can connect student learning with community needs; however, changes in knowledge and behavior were not measured using standardized instruments.

Abstract

Plastic waste problems in island communities require not only technical handling but also educational intervention. GEMABAKTI II aimed to provide ecoliteracy education through waste sorting and hands-on ecobrick production. The activity was conducted on 17 July 2023 at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 28 Makassar, Barrang Lompo Island, involving 190 students from grades VII–IX. The program comprised preliminary coordination, education on plastic-waste impacts, waste sorting, demonstration and product-making practice, and process evaluation based on participant engagement and product completion. All groups completed the sorting and plastic-compaction stages and produced three product types: a waste bin made from used bottles, an ecobrick bench, and an ecobrick table. The activity offered contextual learning that connected knowledge of plastic waste with simple waste-management action. As no pretest–posttest or standardized ecoliteracy instrument was administered, the findings represent process and product achievements rather than quantitative evidence of increased ecoliteracy. Program sustainability requires teacher mentoring, routine waste sorting, and measurable evaluation in subsequent activities.

Abstract

Limited engagement in reading activities and the dominance of gadget use during children’s leisure time constituted a non-formal education concern in Dusun Dukuh, Pandowoharjo, Sleman. This community service program aimed to strengthen children’s literacy engagement, creativity, and social values through the Literasi Ceria Program. The program was conducted from 31 July to 30 August 2025 and involved approximately 15–20 primary-school-aged children in each session. A participatory approach was implemented through needs identification, collaborative planning, activity implementation, evaluation, and reflection. The program combined shared reading, storytelling, drawing, coloring, singing, dancing, educational traditional games, and light tutoring. Program achievement was evaluated using observation sheets, a simple parent questionnaire, informal interviews, and documentation, and the data were analyzed descriptively. During the activities, children showed increasingly consistent involvement in taking turns reading, listening to and retelling stories, asking questions, expressing ideas through artwork, cooperating with peers, and following game rules. Parents and community leaders responded positively and considered the program an educational alternative for children’s weekend activities. The program indicated that integrating literacy, arts, traditional games, and learning assistance could create enjoyable community-based learning experiences; however, long-term effects could not be inferred because of the limited implementation period.
