Abstract

Institutional systems repeatedly generate a structural divergence between intrinsic adequacy and institutional operability. Entities possessing coherent structure, competence, or evidential support frequently remain unable to circulate within organized domains, while other entities continue to generate authoritative consequences despite contested intrinsic adequacy. This asymmetry indicates that institutional operability is not governed by epistemic truth, causal capability, or intrinsic properties alone. The operative condition lies in admission. Within institutional systems capable of enforceable recognition, entities become effective only after passing the admission threshold that authorizes participation in the domain’s decision structure. The present analysis develops a social-ontological model specifying validation as the binding condition of institutional admissibility. The investigation proceeds through analytical reconstruction of institutional mechanisms combined with comparative conceptual illustration across three structurally distinct domains: monetary circulation, professional jurisdiction, and scientific publication. These domains isolate the distinction between intrinsic reality, defined as the material, semantic, or causal constitution of entities, and operative reality, defined as the authorization under which entities may function within institutional systems regulating participation, responsibility, and circulation. The analysis establishes that institutional systems stabilize action through validation regimes governing admissibility rather than through direct evaluation of intrinsic adequacy. Validation admits entities into the domain’s operative field and thereby permits circulation, authority, and responsibility allocation. Withdrawal of validation produces immediate institutional inoperability while intrinsic properties remain unchanged. This discontinuity shows that institutional efficacy depends on admission status rather than intrinsic capability, establishing operative reality through validation within social systems.

Abstract

Disaster literacy is an essential competency for primary school students, particularly in disaster-prone regions; however, it is often not optimally integrated into classroom learning. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with ethnoscience to enhance disaster literacy among primary school students. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving elementary students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, and observations to measure students’ knowledge, awareness, and preparedness related to disaster risk. The main statistical analyses used were the t-test and N-gain to compare disaster literacy between groups. The learning intervention integrated local wisdom (ethnoscience) into problem-oriented STEM activities relevant to students’ real-life contexts. The results showed a significant difference in disaster literacy between the experimental and control groups, with t (58) = 3.27 and p = 0.002 (p < 0.05). The experimental group demonstrated higher improvement (N-gain = 0.62; moderate category) compared to the control group (N-gain = 0.29; low category). These findings indicate that STEM-ethnoscience learning significantly improves students’ disaster literacy. This approach also provides a meaningful and culturally relevant framework for disaster education. In conclusion, the STEM-ethnoscience approach is an effective and innovative pedagogical strategy for enhancing disaster awareness and preparedness in primary education.

Abstract

Indonesia’s commitment to reducing food loss and waste (FLW) is hindered by a governance gap that transforms a technical issue into a structural one. This study analyses the systemic barriers within Indonesia's regulatory framework through a public administration and governance lens. The findings of this research reveal that institutional fragmentation remains the core obstacle, with silo effect among agencies resulting in weak cross-sectoral coordination. This lack of integration leads to inconsistent data and misalignment between central and regional governments, as well as disconnection from non-state actors. Ultimately, FLW reduction in Indonesia cannot be solved by isolated technical fixes. It requires a collaborative governance transformation that synchronizes authority and integrates policy execution across the food system chain.

Abstract

The reception of US President Joe Biden with a Pendet dance performance at the 2022 Bali G20 Summit appears to be an ordinary ceremonial event. However, from a post-structuralist historical perspective, it marks his treatment as a formal guest of honor. This protocol mirrors President Sukarno’s state visits in the early 1960s, though Biden was welcomed directly at the airport while Sukarno was received both at the airport and on a public stage of honor in downtown Denpasar. This study traces the historical trajectory of such state receptions, revealing that utilizing a stage of honor has roots spanning the royal era, the Dutch colonial period, and the New Order era, particularly within the Bali Arts Festival (PKB) since 1979. Methodologically, the research relies on oral history, archival studies, and literature reviews.  Theoretically, it frames the analysis using Foucault’s concepts of discontinuity and power-knowledge relations, postcolonialism, and Bourdieu’s practice theory. The study concludes that the stage of honor has undergone a profound functional shift, evolving from a traditional welcoming ritual, political legitimation tool, and tourism commodity into a potent symbol of contemporary political representation.

Abstract

The Nanda Tradition in the Pangebekan Ceremony at Agung Petilan Pengerebongan Temple, Bali is a sacred cultural and religious tradition that has been preserved by the Balinese Hindu community across generations. While previous studies have primarily focused on its ritual, historical, and cultural dimensions, its role as a medium of Hindu religious education has received limited scholarly attention. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the Hindu Religious Education values embedded in the Nanda Tradition and to explain its function in transmitting religious teachings and preserving cultural heritage. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, literature review, and document analysis involving traditional leaders, temple priests, Serati Banten, community leaders, and local community members selected purposively. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation, while data were analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Nanda Tradition contains multidimensional Hindu Religious Education values, including religious values reflected in Tri Wisesa and Bhakti Marga Yoga, theological values expressed through devotion to Ida Bhatara Dalem Mutering Jagat Kesiman and Dewa Yajna, ethical values demonstrated through Ngayah and Tri Hita Karana, aesthetic values represented by the Tanda Dance and Gamelan Leluangan, and ecological values reflected in Nyapuh Jagat and Palemahan. The study concludes that the Nanda Tradition functions as an effective medium of religious education that strengthens sradha and bhakti, fosters character development, preserves cultural heritage, and promotes ecological awareness within the Kesiman Traditional Village community.

Catur Guru as a strategic foundation in strengthening student character education at the Kertajaya Non-Formal Pasraman, Tangerang. Catur Guru, as the core of Hindu teachings that includes respect for Guru Swadyaya (God), Guru Wisesa (government), Guru Rupaka (parents), and Guru Pengajian (teachers at school), was chosen to strengthen character education based on moral and spiritual values. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, which includes participatory observation, interviews with related parties, and document analysis regarding the implementation of Catur Guru at the pasraman. The results of the study indicate that the teachings of Catur Guru (guru swadyaya, guru rupaka, guru pengajian, and guru wisesa) at the Kertajaya Pasraman Tangerang have made a positive contribution to the character of the Hindu generation. Through guru swadyaya (religious habits, prayer), guru pengajian (exemplary behavior, discipline, responsibility), guru rupaka (respect for parents), and guru wisesa (discipline, responsibility, and social concern). This concept has succeeded in internalizing the values of all Catur Guru adaptively. As a result, students are able to develop noble personalities that balance tradition, preserving local wisdom, and adapting to modern developments. Despite the challenges of globalization and parents' limited time, opportunities for technology-based innovation remain wide open. This research is expected to serve as a reference for other non-formal educational institutions in integrating Hindu teachings to develop the character of a young generation with morals and integrity.

Abstract

Educational leadership in the twenty first century requires the capacity to cultivate a harmonious, character driven, and sustainable school culture through the integration of local wisdom values. This study aims to examine the implementation of Tri Hita Karana based visionary leadership in fostering school harmony within Cluster IV of Kediri District, Tabanan Regency, Bali. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in this study. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving school principals as key informants. The data were analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that visionary leadership was manifested through the continuous communication of the school vision, participatory decision-making processes, teacher professional development initiatives, and the implementation of school programs focused on character formation and environmental stewardship. The values of Tri Hita Karana were embodied through religious and spiritual practices (parhyangan), the promotion of mutual cooperation, deliberation, and collaborative relationships among school members (pawongan), as well as environmental conservation programs, regular community service activities, and school environmental management practices (palemahan). These initiatives contributed to the development of spiritual, social, and ecological harmony, as reflected in increased participation in school activities, strengthened interpersonal relationships, and the creation of a clean, orderly, and supportive learning environment. The study concludes that the integration of visionary leadership and Tri Hita Karana values contributes to the development of a harmonious school culture and offers an alternative model of educational leadership grounded in local wisdom for addressing contemporary educational challenges.

Abstract

Early reading proficiency is one of the fundamental competencies that determines elementary school students’ academic success, as it serves as the foundation for understanding information, developing language skills, and participating effectively in learning activities across various subjects. However, difficulties in achieving fluent early reading remain a challenge for some elementary school students. One factor presumed to influence this condition is the family environment, which functions as the child’s first and primary educational setting. This study aims to analyze the role of the family environment in supporting the early reading fluency of elementary school students. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design and was conducted among first-grade students at State Elementary School 7 Kediri. The research participants consisted of six parents, six students, and one classroom teacher, who were selected purposively based on their involvement in the early reading learning process. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students’ early reading fluency is influenced not only by technical reading practice but also by the quality of family interactions. Parental assistance, educational communication, family literacy culture, and a conducive learning environment contribute significantly to enhancing students’ motivation, self-confidence, and reading fluency. The study also found that digital technology exerts varying effects on children’s reading habits. The use of digital media primarily for entertainment tends to reduce reading intensity, whereas the utilization of reading applications, educational videos, and digital storybooks accompanied by parental guidance can support the development of early reading skills. This study concludes that active family involvement through the establishment of a literacy culture, emotional support, educational communication, and the wise management of digital technology use constitutes a strategic factor in promoting the early reading fluency of elementary school students.
