Abstract

English has been a compulsory subject for all students in Indonesia for a long time. In an era of globalization in almost every field, English is increasingly used. There are many approaches that a teacher can give to their students so that English learning can be accomplished well and students can understand it. The study aims to determine the improvement of English learning results through the application of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) Approach to Class VIII.5 students in UPT SPF SMPN 18 Makassar using Classroom Action Research Method (PTK). The subjects of this study are students of VIII-5 consist of 27 students. The object of the study is the result of learning English. The objective of the study is to identify and analyse the effectiveness of the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach to improving English learning outcomes. Data is collected using learning outcome tests and analysed. Study results show that student learning results increase from cycle 1 to cycle 2. So it can be concluded Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach can improve student learning outcomes in class VIII.5 UPT SPF SMPN 18 Makassar school year 2023/2024 in two cycles.Keywords— Learning Outcome, English, Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT)

Abstract

This study aimed to find out (1) how effective is using strategy of building connections between teacher and students in reducing students’ anxiety in learning English, and (2) what are the factors that influence students’ anxiety in learning English. This study used a qualitative descriptive method and data was collected through observation and interview. The observation process was carried out in one meeting in class X.3 SMAN 1 Jeneponto and the interview process was conducted with eight students. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights to teachers, schools, and educational institutions in developing more effective teaching strategies in EFL learning contexts. The recommendations drawn from this study emphasize the need for ongoing teacher professional development to enhance relationship-building skills and implement supportive practices, ultimately fostering positive learning experiences for students.Keywords-- Strategy, Build Connection, Anxiety

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate whether using YouTube videos improve students' pronunciation ability. Employing a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design, the study focused on students in eighth grade at SMPN 3 Baebunta, with a sample size of 30 students from class 8.A. Data collection involved pre-tests and post-tests. The analysis revealed a notable increase in post-test mean scores compared to pre-test scores, indicating an improvement from a very poor to a good category. Statistical analysis using a t-test with a significance level of 0.05 demonstrated a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H1). Thus, according to the study's hypothesis, the utilization of YouTube videos significantly enhanced students' pronunciation skills at SMPN 3 Baebunta. Consequently, the researcher concluded that the use of YouTube videos improved students' pronunciation at SMPN 3 Baebunta.Keywords: Pronunciation,YouTube Videos.

Abstract

This research is entitled " Symbolic Interactionism of the Main Character “Noah” in the Noah Movie: A Sociolinguistic Analysis." This study aims to analyze how the symbolic interactionism reflected of the main character “Noah” in the “Noah Movie by Darren Aronofsky (2014) by using George Harbert Mead’s theory (1937) the types of Symbolic Interactionism attaching symbols to object, actions, and interactions. The analysis method used refers to the sociolinguistic analysis by considering Blumer (1986) theory to explore the interpret meaning from their social interactions especially ‘Noah’ as the main character in the movie. Descriptive qualitative research is used in this study. Data obtained from the text of conversations between the main character and other characters that contain elements of symbolic interactionism. The results of this research show that there are 25 screenshots of the main character scenes in total as the data that has been collected from “Noah” movie. The findings provide deep insight into how the main character “Noah” reflects Symbolic Interactionism in various way such us personal appearance, verbal and nonverbal communication, self-concept, perceptions of others and role-taking. And from the 25 extracts obtained, the researcher also concludes that the use of symbolic interactionism on the main character focuses on object, person, and action, and especially how the final result is obtained and consists of presented meaning, language and thoughts from the symbolic interactionism of the main character. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of literature and how the reflected of Symbolic Interactionism of the main character in the movie literary works.Keywords: Symbolic Interactionism, Noah, Movie, Sociolinguistic

Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between learning resources and students' English learning achievement. This research uses a quantitative approach and correlational methods. The sample in this study was 30 students of class VIII i of SMP Negeri 13 Makassar, and the sample was selected using random sampling technique. Data was obtained from questionnaire answers of 30 respondents and tests of 30 respondents and then correlated. The results of the research concluded that the correlation between learning resources and students' English learning achievement obtained rxy results amounting to 0.376, (between 0.210 - 0.400) where the two variables have a low degree of correlation and a positive form of correlation. It can be concluded that the hypothesis which states that there is a relationship between learning resources and students' English learning achievement is accepted. So, whatever learning resources the teacher uses should be in accordance with the learning objectives so that they can support the student learning process and obtain optimal results.Keywords: Learning Resources, Learning Achievement

Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers' understanding of the flow of learning objectives (Alur Tujuan Pembelajaran/ATP) after participating in the Merdeka Curriculum training. Researcher apply qualitative methods. Participants in this study were 2 English teachers. Data collection was carried out through interviews and document analysis of the flow of learning objectives (Alur Tujuan Pembelajaran/ATP). Based on the results of the in-depth interviews, the data results show that the participants has a higher understanding of the components and indicators contained in the flow of learning objectives  (Alur Tujuan Pembelajaran/ATP). Abstract

In this study, the researcher analyzed the personality of the main character in a literary work. The researcher examined two issues, namely: (1) What are the personality structures of Randolph "Rann" Colfax in the novel The Eternal Wonder, (2) How is the dynamics of Randolph "Rann" Colfax's personality in the novel The Eternal Wonder. The Eternal Wonder is a novel by Pearl S. Buck. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive method and Psychoanalytic approach. Based on the findings, there are 7 structures of Id personality found in the main character Randolph "Rann" Colfax, 7 structures of Ego personality found in the main character Randolph "Rann" Colfax, and 7 structures of Superego personality found in the main character Randolph "Rann" Colfax. Meanwhile, the analysis conducted based on the personality structures found within Randolph "Rann" Colfax revealed personality dynamics in the form of indications of positive instincts and anxiety. Keywords: Psychoanalysis, personality, impulse

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the aspects that affect Islamic Boarding School students’ English vocabulary building difficulties and how to solve the difficulties. The study employed mixed method (QUAN-qual) explanatory design to achieve the objectives of the research. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. The participants of the questionnaire were one class (33) of Seventh Grade students of Holistic Boarding School of Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Makassar, and 10 students were taken as interview participants by purposive sampling technique. The result of the research showed that there are three aspects be the most of difficulties faced by the students, namely: grammar, connotation, and pronunciation. The data also showed that the students used dictionary, practice with friends, and searching on internet to solve those difficulties.Keywords: Students’ difficulty, Vocabulary, Solve.

Abstract

Small talk is light-hearted conversation that is usually done to cure boredom or to start a conversation with someone new. Usually, the topics discussed in small talk are not very deep or serious, such as the weather, daily activities, or hobbies. The main purpose of small talk is to build intimacy or rapport with others. This research aims to find out the effect of small talk in introducing personal branding and how to make small talk with the public to introduce personal branding. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods in analyzing data. There are two sources used, namely Primary and secondary. According to Peter Montoya in Haroen (2014) there are 8 personal branding concepts that must exist in a public figure, including The Law of Visibility, The Law of Specialization, The Law of Unity, The Law of Leadership, The Law of Persistence, The Law of Personality, The Law of GoodWill, and The Law of Distinctiveness. Based on this research, we found 31 extracts included in 8 Specialization, 1 Leadership, 7 Personality, 4 Distinctiveness, 4 Visibility, 2 Unity, 4 Persistence, and 1 Goodwill. Keywords : Small Talk, Personal Branding, Jimmy Fallon,

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether the brainstorming method can improve students' impromptu public speaking ability. The researcher applied pre-experimental method and to achieve the research objectives, data collection was conducted through pre-test and post-test. The population of this study is all of the second grade of SMAN 16 Makassar students and the sample of this study consisted of 35 students of class 11 MIPA 6 at SMA 16 Makassar with random sampling technique. The results of the pre-test and post-test of impromptu public speaking after being analyzed with the significant test formula showed a T-Test value that was greater than the T-Table value so H0 was accepted, and after being analyzed with the N-Gain value the results showed that the improvement that occurred in the speaking ability of the sample group was low.
