Abstract

Lakon Bima Suci represents one of the most complex and philosophical literary works within the Javanese wayang tradition. Despite extensive scholarly attention, in-depth research on the spiritual transformation of Werkudara using multidisciplinary approaches remains limited. The complexity of philosophical meanings and symbolism in this lakon requires comprehensive analysis to reveal its profound spiritual dimensions. This study aims to examine the spiritual transformation of Werkudara (Bima) in Lakon Bima Suci through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates perspectives from religious anthropology, analytical psychology, semiotics, and contemporary literary theory. The analytical focus centers on Werkudara's heroic journey in searching for Tirta Pawitra Kamandalu as a metaphor for spiritual journey toward self-realization. This research employs narratological analysis to dissect story structure, hermeneutic approaches for interpreting symbolic meanings, and phenomenological methods to reveal the spiritual experiences embodied in Werkudara's actions. The research findings demonstrate that Lakon Bima Suci not only presents an adventure story but also constitutes a sophisticated allegory of the individuation process and existential meaning-seeking. Werkudara's actions reflect archetypal patterns of heroic journey that are universal yet contextualized within the Javanese-Hindu worldview, depicting a journey from unconsciousness to spiritual enlightenment. Lakon Bima Suci represents a complex spiritual journey that successfully integrates universal heroic pattern elements with Javanese-Hindu philosophical values, offering profound perspectives on human spiritual transformation.

Abstract

Language functions not only as a tool for communication but also as a reflection of the speaker’s attitudes and the social values they uphold. In the educational context, particularly in Javanese language learning at the junior high school (SMP) level, the use of polite language is essential for creating a harmonious and educational learning environment. However, in practice, violations of linguistic politeness principles are often found, committed by both teachers and students. This paper describes the forms of linguistic politeness violations in teacher-student conversations during Javanese language learning in junior high school, using a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling, with data sources including settings, events, and documents. Data collection techniques involved observation and document analysis. The research findings revealed a total of 44 instances of violations of politeness principles in teacher-student conversations during Javanese language lessons. This study is expected to serve as a reference for improving the quality of educational communication in schools through the development of linguistic politeness in the learning process.

Abstract

Aksara Jawa as one of the cultural heritages of the Javanese people is now increasingly rarely used in everyday life. This problem encourages the importance of preservation efforts, one of which is through utilization in public spaces, especially in the Yogyakarta philosophical axis area which is rich in cultural values. This study aims to examine the application of aksara Jawa in cultural heritage buildings and tourist attractions along the Yogyakarta philosophical axis, as well as to examine its relevance to values of Keyogyakartaan. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with field observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation. The results of the study show that the use of aksara Jawa has been applied to nameplates, location markers, and decorative elements in historic buildings such as the Yogyakarta Palace, Tugu Pal Putih, Yogyakarta Station, and several points in Malioboro. However, its use still contains spelling errors and inconsistencies in the rules of aksara Jawa writing. These findings indicate that preservation has not been carried out optimally and tends to be only aesthetic. The values of Yogyakarta such as "pamenthanging gandewa, pamanthenging cipta" and "sawiji, greget, sengguh ora mingkuh" can be used as a basis for strengthening more meaningful preservation. The conclusion of this study is the need for standardization of aksara Jawa writing in public spaces as part of educative and representative cultural preservation. It is recommended that the government, academics, communities and society collaborate in compiling standard guidelines and increasing cultural literacy through strategic spaces.

Abstract

This study examines the adaptation of Sanskrit lexicons in the Javanese language, a process persisting since the 4th century CE as an instrument of religion, literature, and political authority. The primary focus is to identify systematic patterns of phonological change and semantic shifts that facilitated the integration of this foreign language into the local system. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach within a historical linguistic perspective, data analysis was conducted through etymological tracing of Old and Modern Javanese text corpora, phonotactic classification to map sound transformations, and synchronic diachronic analysis to detect semantic evolution. The findings reveal that phonological adaptation occurred through deaspiration and consonant cluster simplification to satisfy Javanese phonological constraints. Semantically, a “nativization” of meaning took place through mechanisms of narrowing, widening, and recontextualization aligned with the community's sociocultural reality. These findings affirm that the Javanese language functions as an active filter that nativizes Sanskrit elements, rendering them an integral part of the Nusantara linguistic identity that remains adaptive to this day.

Abstract

The importance of learning evaluation must be supported by the use of high-quality assessment instruments. This study aims to analyze the quality of essay test items based on their validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discrimination index in the Grade VIII Javanese Language Final Semester Examination in Sukoharjo Regency for the 2023/2024 academic year. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method. The data consisted of test questions, test blueprints, answer keys, scoring rubrics, and 64 students’ answer sheets selected through simple random sampling. The analysis was conducted using the Classical Test Theory approach, including validity testing (Product Moment correlation), reliability testing (Cronbach’s Alpha), item difficulty analysis, and discrimination index analysis. The results revealed that all test items were invalid (r-count < r-table at the 0.05 significance level), although the instrument demonstrated very high reliability (0.990). All items were categorized as easy, and most showed low or even negative discrimination indices. These findings indicate that the instrument has not accurately measured students’ competencies nor effectively differentiated students’ ability levels. Therefore, a comprehensive revision of the test construction is necessary before it is used as an official evaluation instrument.

Abstract

The oral tradition of the Watugede Bathing Pool recounts the meeting between Ken Dedes and Ken Arok, which serves as the basis for the Adus Kembang Pitung Rupa ritual. This study aims to describe the philosophy of the ritual's stages, the meaning of the ubarampe, and the values of female power reflected in it. In addition, it aims to develop its relevance as a teaching material for Javanese language learning. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and literature studies, then analysed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The results show that each stage of the ritual and ubarampe embodies values of self-purification, prayers for safety and hope, as well as the meaning of women's roles in the legitimacy and sustainability of culture. These findings are implemented as a learning model in the form of descriptive text teaching materials in the learning outcomes of the Siswa Saged Nyemak Waosan Dheskriptip Ngenani Paguyuban ing Masarakat Jawa. This learning achievement opens up space for critical discussion of oral traditions that are beginning to be forgotten, while also clarifying the understanding that ritual practices are not necessarily seen as heretical but can be read as cultural heritage that carries educational values.

Abstract

The buka giling ritual (sugarcane milling season opening) at Lestari Sugar Factory, Patianrowo, is more than a ceremonial marker for the production season; it represents a complex industrial rite embedded with symbolic, historical, and social significance. Amid the pressures of national sugar industry modernization, this tradition persists as both an adaptive mechanism and an integrative force between local communities and industrial institutions. This study examines how the buka giling ritual operates as a social system through symbolic and structural analysis. A qualitative research design employing an interpretive ethnographic approach was adopted. Data were gathered via participant observation, semi-structured indepth interviews with community leaders, workers, management, and sugarcane farmers, as well as documentation of ritual proceedings. Analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014) interactive model, validated through source triangulation. The theoretical framework draws on Talcott Parsons’ (1951) AGIL social systems theory and Clifford Geertz’s (1973) interpretive cultural theory. The findings reveal that the buka giling ritual fulfills four primary social functions: (1) adaptation to industrial transformation, (2) goal attainment through collective production and solidarity, (3) social integration among diverse actors, and (4) latency through preservation of local cultural values and identity. Ritual elements such as the manten tebu procession and cethik geni ceremony symbolize the unification of nature, community, and industrial technology. This study contributes to the fields of industrial anthropology and cultural labor studies, recommending institutional support for preserving local rites as a form of productive and sustainable social integration.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the representation of Javanese ethics and character education values in the Ceprotan traditional ceremony in Sekar Village, Pacitan, and relate them to the context of ethnopedagogy in Javanese language learning. The phenomenon of moral degradation in the era of globalization demands the revitalization of local wisdom as the basis for character building in students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles & Huberman interactive model, which includes data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the Ceprotan traditional ceremony contains fundamental Javanese ethical values, such as gratitude, harmony, respect, and unity of feeling. Ethnopedagogically, these values are represented in the symbolism of cengkir and ritual processes that teach mental toughness and social harmony. The implications of this research offer a framework for integrating local wisdom into Javanese language teaching materials as an effort to strengthen the Pancasila Student Profile, which is contextual and based on regional cultural identity.
