Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by damage to the pancreas organ such as insulin secretion abnormalities, insulin resistance, and insufficient production of the hormone insulin which can cause an increase in blood glucose levels. To overcome this, people with diabetes mellitus need antidiabetic drugs. In general, these drugs work by controlling sugar levels in the body. Although there are various therapeutic options for treating diabetes mellitus, there are often side effects that can be detrimental. Therefore there is a need for effective treatment, and the use of natural products is recommended as an alternative treatment method. This study aims to find natural product compounds that have medicinal potential as an alternative treatment for diabetes mellitus. The method used in this review is by searching published scientific literature in the form of PubMed, Elsevier journals, NCBI, and Google Scholar by differentiating the exclusions that have been set. The results of this review show positive results where there are various natural compound compounds that have potential as antidiabetic drugs. However, this is still limited to molecular docking, so further studies are needed.

Abstract

Along with the development of COVID-19 cases, health maintenance efforts to maintain and increase endurance are significant. Healthy living efforts that need to be implemented are by regulating the intake of nutritional supplementation of both macronutrients and micronutrients. One type of nutraceutical food with complex nutrients that has the potential to be used as a nutraceutical for supplementation efforts is yogurt. Traditionally, yogurt is also mentioned in the Balinese medical wisdom, namely, Usadha. In Usadha, yogurt combines ingredients found in Lontar Usadha Taru Pramana (Usadha, which contains various medicinal plants). The method used to compile this article is a systematic review literature study. Relevant information was collected from Google Scholar, Science Direct, ProQuest, Pubmed, and EBSCO. Scopus, Sinta, or Garuda-indexed articles published in the last five years were selected. Based on the literature search, it is known that the addition of each turmeric, ginger, secang, and cinnamon extract to yogurt can improve the physicochemical quality and nutritional content of the yogurt, especially antioxidants, thus contributing to health maintenance and being able to maintain the probiotic stability of yogurt. The combination of spiced yogurt with ginger, turmeric, secang wood, and cinnamon rhizomes can be used as probiotic-antioxidant supplementation to support a healthy lifestyle related to maintaining the immune system.

Abstract

Folic acid plays an important role for the health of mothers and babies, especially in the growth and development of the fetus. Based on several previous studies, it was found that prenatal folic acid deficiency or excess can increase the risk of Autism Spectrum Disease (ASD) in infants. This raises concerns about the adverse effects of prenatal folic acid supplements including an increased risk of ASD. Therefore, this literature review article was created to further explore the implications or involvement of maternal folic acid supplementation on the risk of ASD in their offspring. The Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Connected Papers electronic databases were used to find literature that met the criteria. The results of this review found a potential beneficial effect of prenatal folic acid supplementation on the risk of developing ASD, although conflicting results have been reported. In summary, this literature review article demonstrates that prenatal folic acid supplementation can significantly reduce the risk of ASD in offspring compared to women without prenatal folic acid supplementation.

Abstract

The high yield of coffee causes an increase in the amount of coffee husk waste produced, so innovations are needed to process coffee waste so that it can be helpful and not wasted. The study aimed to reduce crude fiber in fermented coffee husks using Aspergillus oryzae to become animal feed. The research was conducted using experimental and descriptive methods: coffee husk flour (Coffea sp.), Aspergillus oryzae, urea, ammonium sulfate, and minerals. Coffee husk flour was fermented in dry media and wet media at room temperature for 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours. After fermentation, test the analysis of the decrease in the amount of crude fiber in the sample using the Wendee method test. The results showed that the fermentation of coffee husk flour (Coffea sp.) using Aspergillus oryzae with the addition of urea, ammonium sulfate, and minerals could reduce the amount of crude fiber. The difference in fermentation media showed that fermentation in wet media gave better crude fiber reduction results than fermentation in dry media. The crude fiber yield of dry media sample N1 is 0.25 grams (25%), and sample N2 is 0.22 grams (22%), while the crude fiber yield of wet media sample N1 is 0.13 grams (13%) and sample N2 is 0.11 grams (11%). Fermentation with Aspergillus oryzae produces ligninase, an enzyme that breaks down lignin which can degrade lignin into simpler compounds.
