Abstract

"Moxie" movie stands out for its focus on youth experiences with gender inequality, shedding light on evolving gender dynamics. This research investigates gender inequality and women's struggles against it as portrayed in the movie "Moxie." The study aims to answer two key questions: 1) What types of gender inequality are depicted in the movie? 2) How do women struggle against gender inequality in the film?. Utilizing "Moxie" as a cultural representation and source of data, the study employed qualitative research methods, data were collected from the movie transcript and supplemented with information from diverse sources. Data analysis techniques by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana were applied, which is data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing/ verification. The findings revealed 37 extracts categorized into five types of gender inequality: marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and double burden. There are 4 extracts containing cases of marginalization, 2 extracts of subordination, 2 extracts of stereotyping, 6 extracts of violence, and one extract for double burden. There are 21 extracts that relate to women’s struggles, which are  9 extracts about women intellectuals, there are 3 extracts relating to herself, there are 9 extracts relating to women actualizing themselves. Violence emerged as the most prevalent, while double burden was the least frequent. Women's struggles encompassed 21 extracts which are 9 extracts of a woman intellectual, to be herself (3 extracts), and women actualize themselves (9 extracts).

Abstract

"SOUR" is the first album or debut album by Olivia Rodrigo to talk about the sour of teenagers’ life like about sadness, anger, insecurities, anxiety, painful of love and many more like that. This album consist of 11 songs and the researcher analyzed all of them, the reason why the researcher chose all of the songs on this album because these songs are very popular especially in teenagers and contained figurative languages in them. This study aims to analyze the figurative languages of the eleven songs’ lyrics. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method. The researcher analyzed ten types of figurative languages according to Kennedy and Gioia (2005) but the researcher only found nine types of figurative language contained on these eleven songs in SOUR album. This study found several findings. There are 56 figurative languages contained in the 11 songs which are divided into twelve hyperboles, eleven metaphors, eight synecdoche, seven repetitions, four similes, four ironies, four allegories, three apostrophes. three paradoxes and there is no any personification found. The researcher found that the most common figurative language found in songs entitled “Jealousy, Jealousy” and “Hope UR OK” which has seven for each of them. “De Javu” which has six. “Brutal”, “Good 4 U”, “Happier” and “Favorite Crime which has five for each of them. “One Step Forward, Three Steps Back”, “Enough For You”and “Drivers License” which has four for each of them. In conclusion, this album has a lot of figurative languages. There are many figurative meanings in the album.

Abstract

This research is entitled Nonverbal Communication in Guillermo Del Toro's Movie: “The Shape of Water”. A movie, also known as a movie, is a form of visual storytelling that typically involves a series of images and sounds that are presented to an audience in order to convey a narrative or message. The purpose of this research is to examine the nonverbal communication in the "The Shape of Water" movie using Mark L. Knapp (2013), Ekman (2003), and Judee Burgoon (1970) theory. Duration of the movie is 02.03.00 and the researcher found the collected data by watching the movie and reading the script. This study is focused on three research questions, the first is what types of nonverbal communication used in the Guillermo del Toro’s movie “The Shape of Water”, the second is what are the functions of nonverbal communication in the Guillermo del Toro’s movie “The Shape of Water” and the third is what are the impacts of the nonverbal communication in the Guillermo del Toro’s movie “Shape of Water”. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study shown that “The Shape of Water” movie contains a variety type of nonverbal communication fully equipped with the functions and impacts of them. The "The Shape of Water" movie contains a variety type of nonverbal communication, including kinesics (five extracts), haptics (three extracts), proxemics (two extracts), chronemics (four extracts), vocalics or paralanguage (two extracts), and artifacts (three extracts). The researcher also set up several important functions of nonverbal communication in the movie, including complementing verbal communication (six extracts), regulating interaction (three extracts), conveying emotions (two extracts), expressing social relationship (two extracts), and conveying cultural information (two extracts). The researcher also discovered several types of nonverbal communication impacts in the movie, including cognitive impact (two extracts), affective impact (three extracts), behavioral impact (two extracts), relational impact (two extracts), cultural impact (three extracts), gender impact (two extracts), and power and status impact (two extracts).

Abstract

This paper explores the intersection of linguistic determinism and multilingualism in Chetan Bhagat’s One Arranged Murder, a novel set in the multicultural landscape of contemporary India. Drawing on the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, it examines how the integration of Punjabi and Hindi within an English narrative shapes character development, cultural authenticity, and the representation of Indian multilingual identity. Bhagat’s use of vernacular terms, food references, and kinship expressions reflects the sociolinguistic diversity of India and enriches the narrative with cultural nuance. Code-mixing and grammatical adaptations, such as English plural markers applied to Hindi-origin words, illustrate the dynamic interplay of language and identity in urban, multilingual contexts. The paper analyses dialogues, cultural practices, and kinship terms to demonstrate how linguistic choices influence thought processes and interpersonal dynamics. By highlighting the narrative potential of multilingualism, this study underscores the role of language as a powerful tool for reflecting the complexities of a diverse society.Keywords: Linguistic Determinism, Multilingualism, Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, Indian English Literature, Cultural Identity

Abstract

In this study, we analysed the social class conflict from the character statement and situation in the film. We analysed 2 problems; they are: (1) What type of class does each character include in the film according to social class conflict theory? (2) What causes the occurrence of conflict between social classes in the film according to social class conflict theory? The 2019 film Parasite was directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote and co-produced it alongside Han Jin-won. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method combined with a sociological approach. Based on the findings, there are 3 types of social class, the lower class, the middle class, and the upper class. There are 4 characters for the lower class, 1 character for the middle class, and 2 characters for the upper class. The dynamics of each class are constantly overlapping and lead to issues such as the emergence of various conflicts. Each of the conflicts arises from the class differences among the characters in the film. The emergencies of the conflicts are varied, ranging from: conflict involving social positions, conflict of interest, and conflict of role.

Amitav Ghosh challenges conventional climate fiction writing in Gun Island by blending myths, folklore, and realism with his focus on climate change. This article explores how the novel uses literary imagination to present new perspectives on the climate crisis. It also examines the broader significance of climate fiction (cli-fi), the constraints of traditional realism, and the power of creative storytelling to inspire collective action.

Abstract

This research is qualitative descriptive. The purpose of this study is to identify the speech style utilized in Obama and Romney's first presidential debate and to determine the function of speech style. Primary and secondary data sources were used in this investigation. Watching, obtaining transcripts, reading transcripts, and evaluating data in the areas of language style and function were the data gathering strategies employed in this study. The collected data was then evaluated using Martin Joos (1976) theory of speech styles and Janet Holmes (2013) theory of speech functions. According to the findings of this study, the researcher discovered five types of speech styles present in President Barack Obama's first debate against Mitt Romney, namely frozen, formal, consultative, relaxed, and intimate, as well as five language functions identified in the first debate. President Barack Obama's discussion with Governor Mitt Romney was expressive, directional, referential, metalinguistic, and phatic.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative research that analyzes the conflicts face by Miguel and his personality development. The aims of this study are: (1) To find out what are the conflicts faced by Miguel’s main character in Coco movie by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina; (2) To find out how do conflicts affect Miguel’s personality development; (3) To find out how did Miguel solves his conflicts. The data for this study were obtained by watching the movie. Analysis of the data used an interactive analysis model which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusions (Huberman & Saldana, 2014). Based on the research results, the writer found 2 types of conflicts faced by the main character that occurred in Coco movie: internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflicts which consist of: bad luck, admiration, fear, anger, confuse, panic, nervous; External conflicts which consist of: character vs. society and character vs. supernatural. Miguel was born in a family that hates music. He wants to become a musician but his family always banned him. This problem makes him travelled to the land of the dead to find out the truth of his family. At first, Miguel is described as an ambitious, selfish, stubborn, fanatical boy. Due to his experiences of particular changes in the land of the dead, he turns into an obedient, wise, unselfish and regretful boy.

Abstract

Human uses language as a tool to communicate with fellow humans. Language serves the purpose of social control to foster good relationship among people. Establishing effective social control is essential for ensuring clear communication and preventing misunderstandings that may lead to conflicts. Consequently, every individual needs to possess the communicative competence to understand expressions within their respective contexts. As it is crucial to understand speech acts and consider the context of utterances. Speech acts are not only observable in daily life, but can also in movies. Movies are forms of literature that can be utilized to explore various studies, including speech acts. One of most frequently occurring speech acts, both in real life and in movies, is illocutionary acts performed by the characters. This thesis focuses on illocutionary acts within character dialogues. In analyzing illocutionary acts, they are not separated from situational context. In this study, the researcher employs Leech’s Speech Situation theory to identify context and Searle’s illocutionary acts theory. To analyze the data, the researcher uses a Pragmatics approach and a descriptive qualitative method. The results are obtained from movie transcripts, which are then interpreted and explained in detail. Based on the findings of the research, there are five types of illocutionary acts uttered by the characters in True Spirit movie. They are assertives, directives, expressives, commisives, and declarations. Among the illocutionary acts, directives are the most commonly used, whereas declaratives are the least frequently employed.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative study that analyzes the signs on the cover of the novel House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson and the parts of the signs that represent the content of the story. The aims of this research are: (1) To find out what signs are on the cover of the novel House of Hunger; (2) To find out how the signs on the cover represent the contents of the novel. This research data was obtained by reading novels. Data analysis uses an descriptive analysis model which includes data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions (Huberman & Saldana, 2014). This research uses Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach to analyze the signs on the cover of the novel House of Hunger. Based on the research results, the author found 3 types of signs on the cover of the novel House of Hunger: Icon, Index and Symbol. The data obtained were 10 signs on the novel cover, 4 of which were icons, 3 indexes, and 3 symbols. All the signs on each book cover represent the content of the story in the novel such as characters, situations, settings, conflict and characterization.
