Abstract

Floods are natural disasters that often hit Indonesia, having a significant impact on public health and environmental quality. This study aims to evaluate the state of clean water and sanitation after the flood in Medan Selayang District. The results of the study showed that 73.33% of the water became dirty, dirty, and cloudy after flooding, which was caused bypollutionfrommud, garbage, and house hold waste. Poorsanitation, including direct discharge of sewage intorivers by 60% of people, worsens the situation and increases the risk of water-based diseases such as diarrhoea and skin infections, especially among children who are the most vulnerable group. In addition, 56.6% of homes experience damp and odour conditions, which contribute to discomfort and health risks. This study emphasizes the need for infrastructure assistance and restoration programs that focus on improving sanitation and access to clean water to prevent further post-disaster health impacts.

Abstract

Introduction: An increasingly frequent natural occurrence as a result of sea level rise and human activities near the coast is tidal flooding. One of the affected locations is Kuala Dewi Indah Beach in Pantai Cermin Sub-district, where tidal flooding has caused a number of social and economic changes in the neighborhood. Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify the social impacts and analyze the economic impacts caused by tidal flooding. Methods: Data was collected using a descriptive qualitative methodology that included a literature review, in-depth interviews and observations. Results: The research findings show that tidal flooding has impacted the economic activities of the community, resulting in considerable financial losses such as damage to boats and fishing gear. Socially, tidal flooding has caused disruption to population mobility, health and education. Conclusion: This study also highlighted the government's lack of preparedness in providing early warnings about tidal floods, with communities relying solely on word of mouth and social media. The damage caused by tidal floods is further exacerbated by the lack of community knowledge and preparedness for disasters. So it is suggested that mitigation efforts such as spatial planning, adaptable infrastructure development, and community education about disasters are necessary.

Abstract

The pollution of rivers in Central Java - Indonesia has become an urgent environmental issue, posing high risks to public health and ecosystems. This literature review study aims to evaluate the impact of river pollution on water quality and environmental health, as well as to identify effective sustainable management approaches. The study found that river pollution in Central Java is primarily caused by industrial waste, domestic waste, and agricultural activities. Industrial waste contains hazardous heavy metals, while domestic and agricultural waste leads to eutrophication, damaging aquatic ecosystems and reducing water quality. This decline in water quality directly impacts human health, increasing the incidence of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. The sustainable management approaches implemented include strict regulation and law enforcement, community education programs, and the application of wastewater treatment technologies. Studies from the Netherlands demonstrate that an integrated approach to water management can significantly reduce pollution, while community-based waste management practices in the Philippines also offer relevant solutions. To enhance sustainable management in Central Java, recommendations include strengthening regulations, adopting environmentally friendly technologies, increasing domestic wastewater management capacity, engaging communities, and developing green infrastructure. By implementing these strategies, it is expected that the river water quality in Central Java can be improved, supporting environmental health efforts and community well-being.

Abstract

One of the natural disasters that often occur in Indonesia's coastal areas is the Rob flood, which increases the possibility of transmission of infectious diseases in addition to causing damage to infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to examine the general public's awareness of the dangers of infectious disease transmission after the flash flood tragedy in Sei Naga Lawan Village, Perbaungan District. This study uses a quantitative methodology and involves 96 randomly selected respondents. Because there are 2,561 people living in Sei Naga Lawan Village, Perbaungan District, the Slovin formula with an error threshold of 10% is used to calculate the number of samples that need to be studied. Thus, 96 residents is the number of samples to be examined. Based on the research, it was found that out of 96 respondents, 30.2% of respondents had insufficient knowledge in understanding the problem of infectious disease risk, while 69.8% of respondents had quite good knowledge about the problem of infectious disease risk after the flash flood. Poor sanitation and lack of public awareness about prevention can exacerbate infectious diseases such as dengue fever and diarrhea. From the research conducted in the conclusion, most of the respondents (69.8%) felt that they had quite good knowledge about the risk of infectious diseases after the flash flood, although some of them (30.2%) had less knowledge in understanding the problem. This concludes that there is a gap in the public's understanding of health risks. Good education is needed by the community to develop sustainable health knowledge to increase public awareness to prevent infectious diseases after floods appropriately.
