Abstract

This study aims to analyze the symbols that Sylvia Plath used in her poems. Therefore, the objectives of the study can be stated as follow: to explore the symbolism in Sylvia Plath’s poems. The approach of this paper is to highlight the symbols which are frequently used by Sylvia Plath in her poems. The data analysis technique used is non-interactive with an emphasis on content analysis. According to the discussion, there are six symbols found such as colors (red, white, black, and pink). Women are also found as one of the symbols. Next, the use of natural objects such as water and the moon. Most of his poetry also uses religious symbols. Lastly, Sylvia Plath uses death as a symbol in her poetry.

Abstract

The purpose of writing this thesis is to determine the effect of contextual learning and learning activities on the ability to write speech texts for eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 25 Pesawaran. The method used in this research is experimental with treatment by level design. This experimental method is used to examine whether there is a causal relationship by giving treatment to the experimental group whose results are compared with the results of the control group. The research method designed to determine the magnitude of the effect between the different variables by looking at the magnitude of the difference using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique. In this study, the ability to write speech text was given treatment with a contextual learning approach. The population was the eight grade students at SMP Negeri 25 Pesawaran in 2018/2019 academic year. The total sample is 68 students who are spread out in VIII A as the experimental class and VIII B as the control class. The results showed that the average of the students’ ability in writing speech text through contextual approach who have high learning activity is (A1B1) = 74.90. Meanwhile, the average of the students’ ability in writing speech text through contextual approach who have low learning activity is (A1B2) 71.37. Thus, the average score of the students’ ability in writing speech text through contextual approach is higher than those who wrote speech texts through conventional approach at each level of different learning activities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out and describe the forms of cohesion and coherence deviations in the descriptive text of class VII students of SMPN 6 Bandar Lampung in the 2018/2019 academic year. This research method uses qualitative because cohesion and coherence deviations in the descriptive text of class VII students of SMPN 6 Bandar Lampung in the 2018/2019 school year will be explained using words and sentences clearly, firmly, and transparently in accordance with the research findings. The results of this study indicate that students' descriptive texts are full of cohesion and coherence deviations. In the aspect of cohesion, deviations can be seen from errors in using the cohesion tool in terms of release or ellipsis and the use of conjunctions. Students are not aware that a word or phrase in the text can be released but correctly. Likewise with conjunctions. In coherence, the coherence deviations found included: the use of the wrong keyword repetition, the use of inappropriate and unvarying pronouns, the use of incorrect transition words due to the student's ignorance. In addition to the errors in the coherence tools, students did not seem to focus on the topics or themes discussed so that students' description texts were found that did not meet the parallel meaning element. That is, there are several descriptive texts of students in expressing ideas that do not focus on the problem so that they deviate from the text's keywords.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine and describe the correlation between figurative language mastery and interest in reading short stories with the ability to appreciate short stories in class VIII SMP Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung in the 2018/2019 academic year. The population and sample in this study were all students of Class VIII Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung. Because the subject was more than 100, then in this study a sample of 25% was taken. So the number of samples is 25% x 256 = 64 students. The research method used was quantitative to determine the magnitude of the correlation between variables. In fact, there were still many inappropriate use of vocabulary and the students' mastery of effective sentences was still lacking. The formulation of the problem in this thesis research was whether there was a correlation between mastery of figurative language and interest in reading short stories with the ability to appreciate short stories in class VIII SMP Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung in the 2018/2019 academic year. The results of the analysis and findings in this study could be concluded that: 1) Mastery of figurative language had a significant correlation with the ability to appreciate short stories with a correlation coefficient of 0.630, 2) Mastery of reading short stories had a significant correlation with appreciating short stories with a correlation coefficient of 0.693, and 3) Mastery of figurative language and mastery of interest in reading short stories had a significant correlation together with the ability to appreciate short stories with a correlation coefficient of 0.733.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the students’ writing news text ability through a process approach with audio-visual media at the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 1 Lampung Timur. This research method is Classroom Action Research (CAR). Data collection techniques in research are observation, documentation, and tests. Observational data analysis techniques and news text writing tests. Based on the analysis of observational data, the students’ writing news text ability through a process approach with audio-visual media at the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 1 Lampung Timur in the first cycle, which is 69.72 with an average value of 56.25% classical success indicators. In the second cycle that is equal to 71.87% with an average value of 87.5% classical success indicator. In the third cycle increased by 80.62% with an average value of 87.5% classical success indicator. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that there was an improve the students’ writing news text ability through a process approach with audio-visual media at the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 1 Lampung Timur.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine and describe the correlation of vocabulary mastery and effective sentence mastery with the exposition writing ability in class VIII SMP Nusantara 2018/2019 academic year. The population and sample in this study were all Class VIII SMP Nusantara students. The quantitative research method determines the magnitude of the relationship between variables. There is still much inappropriate use of vocabulary, and the students' mastery of effective sentences is still lacking. The findings show: 1) vocabulary mastery has a significant relationship with the ability to write exposition with a correlation coefficient of 0.630, 2) effective sentence mastery has a significant relationship with the ability to write exposition with a correlation coefficient of 0.693, and 3) vocabulary mastery and Effective sentence mastery has a significant relationship together with the ability to write exposition with a correlation coefficient of 0.733.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine and describe the improvement of argumentation writing skills through a scientific approach to class VIII students of SMP Negeri 18 Bandar Lampung in the 2018/2019 academic year. The method in this study used a classroom action research design carried out in three cycles. This research was conducted in three cycles. The teacher prepares the lesson plan for each cycle. Each action consists of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The reflection results are used as the basis for developing a further action plan. Therefore, this research can be called collaborative classroom action research. The results showed that the scientific approach could improve the argumentation writing skills of SMP Negeri 18 Bandar Lampung students. Based on the research results in the first cycle, 49% for classical achievement and 28% for the number of students who got the minimum standard score increased in Cycle II, which reached 63% for classical achievement and 69% for students who finished studying. While Cycle III, which is the implementation of the final action, the results show the learning objectives in general and the research objectives in particular, namely reaching 75% for classical achievement and 85% for students' high argumentative writing skills. The scientific approach used in the learning process can improve the ability to write arguments.

Abstract

This study aims to increase learning activities by applying a heuristic approach to learning to improve listening ability and learning activities for Class VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Trimurjo in the 2018/2019 academic year by applying a heuristic approach. This research method is Classroom Action Research (CAR). Data collection techniques in research are observation, documentation, and tests. The technique used in this research is a written test technique, which is to obtain data from the test results of each cycle. Based on the analysis of observational data. There is an improvement in listening ability through a heuristic approach in class VIII SMP Negeri 2 Trimurjo in the 2018/2019 academic year. Therefore, student activity has achieved an indicator of student activity success increasing at least well.
