Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms and functions of representative speech acts in educational-themed video podcasts published on the Kampus Merdeka YouTube channel. This research is grounded in the phenomenon of social media, particularly YouTube, as a means of interactive, participatory communication and learning. In this context, the language used is key to conveying information authentically and responsibly. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through listening and note-taking. The research data consists of utterances containing representative speech acts, such as explaining, stating, informing, mentioning, acknowledging, giving examples, and speculating. Analysis was carried out using the matching method to identify the meaning and function of the utterances based on their context. The results show that representative speech acts play an important role in conveying information and views objectively, as well as strengthening the credibility of the source in the educational context. Through representative speech acts, the message conveyed becomes clearer, more convincing, and more relevant to the topic of discussion. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of effective communication strategies in educational digital media and serve as a reference for educational content creators in the digital era

Abstract

Language serves as the most effective means of communication in everyday life, including within the context of early childhood education. One of the linguistic fields that examines language use is pragmatics, and one of its key focuses is directive speech acts, which function to guide interlocutors in performing specific actions. This study aims to describe the forms of directive speech acts found on the YouTube platform Kinderflix, which features educational videos for early childhood learners. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation and note-taking techniques, and analyzed using the distributional method. The findings reveal three types of directive speech acts, namely questions, commands, and requests. The results contribute to enriching the study of pragmatics, particularly in the area of directive speech acts. Furthermore, this research is expected to serve as a reference for content creators to pay closer attention to linguistic aspects in producing educational materials for early childhood. It is also hoped that this study can be further developed and serve as a useful foundation for future research.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms and functions of representative speech acts found in the YouTube video “The Basic Concept of Understanding Humans” by Cania Citta. The study arises from the phenomenon of digital communication, which demonstrates a shift in speech patterns from merely delivering information to constructing intellectual discourse that is both reflective and argumentative. A descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach was employed. The data, consisting of representative utterances, were collected through observation and note-taking techniques on video transcripts, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the dominant representative speech acts include stating, explaining, reporting, concluding, and speculating. Each utterance functions not only to convey information but also to build rational argumentation and foster critical awareness among audiences regarding the concept of humanity. Illocutionarily, these utterances perform informative, argumentative, and reflective functions, emphasizing the speaker’s epistemic responsibility toward the truth of the propositions delivered. The perlocutionary effects include an increased interest and heightened critical awareness among audiences concerning philosophical issues about human nature. This study contributes to the development of pragmatic studies, particularly in understanding the role of language as an instrument of knowledge and persuasion in digital media.

Abstract

Many students find it difficult to express ideas into a complete story. Their imagination often stops halfway due to limited vocabulary, lack of understanding of story structure, and minimal practice in creative writing. The purpose of this research is to describe the profile of contextual learning on the ability to write short stories at MTs Istiqlal Jakarta, to examine the impact before the use of the contextual learning model on the ability to write short stories at MTs Istiqlal Jakarta, to examine the impact after the use of the contextual learning model on the ability to write short stories at MTs Istiqlal Jakarta, and to describe the effect of learning modules on the ability to write short stories of seventh-grade students at MTs Istiqlal Jakarta. This research uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method. The type of research used is One Group Pretest-Posttest Design, namely a design that only involves one experimental group. The sample in this study consists of 25 (twenty-five students) of grade VII MTs Istiqlal Jakarta. The results of the research show that learning at MTs Istiqlal Jakarta is still dominated by the lecture method so students tend to be passive and their short story writing ability is relatively low, especially in finding ideas, developing plot, and building characters. The implementation of the contextual learning model has been proven to significantly improve students' short story writing ability through active involvement, linking material with real experiences, idea exploration, collaboration in learning communities, reflection, and more in-depth authentic assessment.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the implementation process of the talaqqi method in teaching tajwid in Islamic Religious Education subjects and the obstacles encountered in its implementation at SD Negeri 57 Buton. This research used a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. The subjects of the study were Islamic Religious Education teachers and 23 fifth grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of the talaqqi method was carried out through several stages: the teacher first demonstrated the correct recitation of the Qur'an, students listened carefully, and then students imitated the recitation both collectively and individually. The talaqqi method helps teachers directly correct students' recitation mistakes, thereby improving students' tajwid skills. The obstacles found include differences in students' Qur'an reading abilities, limited learning time, and lack of practice at home. To overcome these obstacles, the teacher provided additional guidance and motivated students to practice reading the Qur'an more frequently.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using E-Short Story media in teaching children’s story reading skills to fifth-grade students of SD 12/79 Batu Gading, Mare District. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 32 fifth-grade students. The instrument used was a reading comprehension test administered before and after the implementation of the E-Short Story media. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a t-test to identify differences in students’ learning outcomes before and after the treatment. The results showed an improvement in students’ ability to read and understand children’s stories after the use of E-Short Story media. The mean posttest score was higher than the mean pretest score, indicating that the E-Short Story media was effective in improving reading skills. The use of E-Short Story media also increased students’ learning motivation, comprehension of story content, and active participation in the learning process. Therefore, E-Short Story media is recommended as an alternative learning medium for teaching reading in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study examines the dominance of mother tongue use in junior high school environments and its implications for the use of Indonesian as the language of instruction. The research is grounded in the sociolinguistic reality of multilingual Indonesian society, where students tend to rely on their first language in daily communication. The objective of this study is to analyze the factors influencing the dominance of mother tongue, its impacts on students’ Indonesian language proficiency, and its pedagogical implications. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review design, analyzing relevant scholarly sources published in recent years. The findings indicate that the dominance of mother tongue is influenced by linguistic, social, and psychological factors, including family environment, peer interaction, and limited Indonesian vocabulary mastery. The study reveals dual impacts: while mother tongue use facilitates comprehension and increases students’ confidence, it also potentially hinders formal Indonesian language development and leads to language interference. The study concludes that mother tongue should not be viewed solely as a barrier but as a potential pedagogical resource. The implications suggest that educators should adopt contextual bilingual strategies to optimize Indonesian language learning in multilingual classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of oral corrective feedback (OCF) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms among Indonesian university students, with a particular focus on lecturers’ preferences and students’ perceptions. The research addresses three main aspects: the types of errors that are corrected, the strategies of OCF employed, and the timing of feedback delivery. A qualitative case study design was adopted, involving classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with lecturers, and open-ended questionnaires distributed to students. Data from these instruments were analyzed separately and then triangulated to ensure credibility and validity. The findings reveal that lecturers mainly prioritize correcting phonological and grammatical errors, as these are perceived to directly influence students’ communicative competence and overall speaking performance. Among the six OCF types proposed by Lyster and Ranta (1997), recast and repetition emerged as the most frequently used strategies. These approaches were favored by lecturers as they corrected learners subtly while minimizing the risk of embarrassment and maintaining the flow of communication. Furthermore, lecturers applied both immediate and delayed feedback depending on the classroom context and learning objectives. From the students’ perspective, OCF was generally viewed positively, as it contributed to raising awareness of errors and fostering speaking improvement. Students particularly appreciated feedback strategies that respected their confidence and speaking flow. Overall, the study underscores the importance of aligning teacher practices with student preferences to maximize the effectiveness of oral corrective feedback in EFL learning contexts.

Abstract

This study describes the availability and utilization of Central Kalimantan folklore books in elementary school learning in Kahayan Tengah District, Pulang Pisau Regency. Folklore has potential as a contextual learning medium that strengthens students' character and cultural literacy. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation in three randomly selected elementary schools: SDN Tuwung 1, SDN Tuwung 2, and SDN Bukit Rawi 1. The findings reveal that the availability of Central Kalimantan folklore books is uneven. SDN Tuwung 1 possesses several bilingual books from the Central Kalimantan Language Center. SDN Bukit Rawi 1 has only two anthology titles in fairly good physical condition. SDN Tuwung 2 has only one local folklore book. The utilization of folklore books in learning remains incidental and has not been systematically integrated into the curriculum. The most frequently used methods are read-aloud and oral storytelling. Follow-up activities such as rewriting or dramatization are rarely conducted. The main challenges include limited book collections, lack of curriculum integration, and minimal teacher training. Nevertheless, students' enthusiasm for folklore is considerably high, indicating significant opportunities to develop literacy programs based on Central Kalimantan folklore. This study recommends more equitable book collection provision, integration of folklore into learning modules, and teacher training to innovatively utilize folklore in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of rhythmic gymnastics on the gross motor development of children aged 5–6 years. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 30 children divided into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group, each comprising 15 children. Data were collected through observation using a gross motor development assessment instrument and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed an improvement in gross motor skills in the experimental group after receiving rhythmic gymnastics treatment. The mean score increased from 23.8 (pretest) to 40.67 (posttest), while the control group increased from 22.2 to 32.33. Category distribution indicated that the experimental group was dominated by high and very high levels, whereas the control group remained in moderate and high categories. The findings indicate that rhythmic gymnastics has a positive effect on the gross motor development of children aged 5–6 years and can be used as an effective learning method in early childhood education.
