Abstract

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a significant public health concern, posing challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a critical role in preventing and controlling these infections. However, their knowledge and practices regarding infection prevention and control are often inconsistent, which can lead to varying levels of infection prevention. The primary aim of this study was to assess the awareness, attitudes, and practices of nurses at Aliabad Teaching Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, concerning hospital-acquired infections. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted over a three-month period, involving 150 nurses working in different departments of the hospital. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire that assessed demographic information, awareness, attitudes, and practices related to infection prevention. The study found that a significant majority of nurses (81.36%) were aware of HAIs, but only 42.5% reported possessing the necessary skills to manage these infections effectively. Nurses who received regular training and used personal protective equipment (PPE) exhibited higher levels of competency in infection control practices. However, there were areas where improvement was needed, particularly in hand hygiene practices and consistent use of PPE. The study concluded that while there is a general awareness of HAIs among nurses, there is a need for continuous training and strengthening infection control measures to enhance patient safety and improve healthcare outcomes.

Abstract

PHBS activities made for early childhood are activities to foster and develop healthy living habits and behaviours in students, which are carried out comprehensively and integrated; for that, for the activity to take place well, it is necessary to plan, implement and evaluate an activity carried out to students to achieve the desired goals. This study aims to provide an overview of implementing clean and healthy living behaviours in children. This qualitative research is descriptive, which is a type of research that describes a symptom, condition, and existing situation. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this study include efforts made to habituate clean and healthy living behaviours in children by providing their activities, such as washing their hands and taking out garbage. The supporting factors for implementing clean and healthy living behaviours in early childhood are rules and regulations at school that support clean and healthy living behaviour activities, parents, and the family environment. The earliest place is the family environment for implementing clean and healthy living behaviours and peers, which is usually when there are students who do activities, other students tend to do it too.

Abstract

Bartholin's gland abscesses are a relatively common gynaecological condition that can lead to significant discomfort and complications if not managed properly. These abscesses typically result from ductal obstruction or infection of the Bartholin glands, causing localized pain, swelling, and erythema. This study evaluated the incidence, clinical presentation, management strategies, and treatment outcomes of Bartholin's gland abscesses at Rabia Balkhi Hospital, Afghanistan, in 2022. A retrospective cohort study used hospital records of women diagnosed with Bartholin's gland abscesses. Twenty-three cases (n = 23) were identified, representing 0.6% of all gynaecological admissions. The most affected age group was 25-35, accounting for 52% of cases. The most common symptoms included severe localized pain (96%), swelling (87%), and erythema (96%). Incision and drainage were the most commonly performed treatment (74%), followed by marsupialization (17%) and drainage tube insertion (9%). The recurrence rate was 13%, and no significant complications were observed. Statistical analysis showed that the highest incidence was in the 25-35-year age group, with a statistically significant association between age and treatment outcomes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Bartholin's gland abscesses are relatively rare but more common in women aged 25-35. Incision and drainage remain the most effective treatment, with a low recurrence rate. These findings highlight the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to prevent complications. Further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are needed to refine treatment protocols and minimize recurrence rates.

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of TikTok narratology and students' health belief systems on sexual health awareness among Akwa Ibom State University students. The research utilised the Health Belief Model as its theoretical framework. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design, with a sample size of 370 participants drawn from the population of 10,200 students using the Krejcie and Morgan formula. A structured questionnaire was employed to gather data, which was analysed to determine students' knowledge, perception, and practices regarding reproductive and sexual health information shared on TikTok platform. Findings demonstrated that TikTok increased students' understanding of reproductive and sexual health issues, with many participants finding its content relatable, engaging, and informative. However, participants evaluated content credibility primarily through its alignment with their existing health beliefs. While TikTok campaigns by organisations such as the Society for Family Health (SFH) and the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) effectively shaped participants' knowledge, attitudes, and practices, doubt existed when the content contradicted cultural or personal health beliefs. Additionally, the combination of easy accessibility with innovative narrativity enabled TikTok to become an effective health communication channel, but it needed enhancement to adapt sensibly to different cultural belief systems. The study concluded that students' health belief systems determine how effectively TikTok could spread sexual health information, though the platform is a valuable tool for sexual health information dissemination. It is recommended that health educators and campaign organisers develop culturally sensitive and credible content that aligns with student's needs while working with trusted organisations to integrate TikTok into broader health awareness programmes. Communicators were also urged to support digital health campaigns to enhance their reach and impact.

Abstract

The sale of antibiotics without a prescription is a serious issue in Vietnam, particularly in the inner city of Hanoi, where this practice remains prevalent despite strict regulations. This has significant negative impacts on public health, including the issue of antimicrobial resistance. This study aims to evaluate the factors influencing the sale of antibiotics without a prescription at retail pharmacies in the inner city of Hanoi, focusing on the districts of Bac Tu Liem and Nam Tu Liem. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to December 2024, targeting pharmacy staff at pharmacies meeting GPP (Good Pharmacy Practice) standards. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and linear regression. Three main factors influencing the sale of antibiotics without a prescription were identified: (1) Belief in benefits (β = 0.273), (2) Ability to perform and control behavior (β = 0.480), and (3) External influencing factors (β = 0.473). The regression model explained 52.9% of the variance in the willingness to sell antibiotics without a prescription. The findings suggest the need to strengthen training and raise awareness among pharmacy staff about the harms of selling antibiotics without a prescription while also improving policies for controlling and monitoring the sale of antibiotics to reduce this issue.

Abstract

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a lung infection acquired outside of healthcare facilities and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Older adults have a higher risk of CAP due to immune system decline, comorbidities, and impaired respiratory defence mechanisms. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the primary pathogen responsible for CAP in the elderly, followed by Haemophilus influenzae and other atypical bacteria. The diagnosis of CAP in older adults is often challenging due to atypical symptoms such as general weakness and confusion, necessitating chest radiography for confirmation. Treatment depends on disease severity and may involve oral or intravenous antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and close monitoring for complications such as respiratory failure and sepsis. Prevention through pneumococcal and influenza vaccination, personal hygiene maintenance, and management of comorbidities is crucial in reducing CAP incidence and mortality in the elderly.

Abstract

About 18% of the world's population, especially teenagers, had sleep issues in 2023, according to WHO statistics. Addiction to internet gaming is one of the causative factors; it stimulates the Reticular Activating System (RAS), which excites the brain and delays the onset of sleep. In 2024, the current study also sought to find out the association between male teenage students of SMKN 1 Padang City's addiction towards online games and sleep quality. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from June until July, 2024. The entire 355 male second-grade students who were chosen by the total sampling technique were considered to be the population. Spearman correlation test was a bivariate and univariate technique used in data analysis. Mean score for sleep quality was 27.54, while that of gaming addiction was 37.44. Spearman test revealed a significant correlation (p = 0.000; ρ = 0.758). It is concluded that there is a strong correlation between online gaming addiction and sleep quality. It is recommended that school education programs on sleep hygiene and time management be provided.
