Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of spirituality-based special-interest tourism in Pesarean Gunung Kawi Tourism Village and to understand tourists' meanings and experiences within the local cultural context. The growing interest in spiritual tourism reflects a shift in tourist preferences toward more personal and reflective experiences. This study employs a qualitative approach with an ethnographic design to explore cultural practices, social interactions, and spiritual experiences at the research site. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving tourism village managers, community leaders, local business actors, and tourists selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three key themes: (1) spiritual tourism is understood as a practice integrating religious, cultural, and personal experiential dimensions; (2) tourists exhibit characteristics of special interest tourists, driven by intrinsic motivations such as the search for meaning, inner peace, and transformational experiences; and (3) tourism development faces challenges including visitor fluctuation, infrastructure limitations, and the risk of cultural commodification. This study contributes theoretically by integrating the concepts of special interest tourism, spiritual tourism, and sustainable tourism within an ethnographic framework.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development strategies for religion- and multiculturalism-based special-interest tourism in Pesarean Gunung Kawi Tourism Village, Malang Regency, with a focus on identifying the destination's potential and challenges. The growing interest in spiritual, authentic, and culturally grounded tourism experiences reflects a paradigm shift from mass tourism to special interest tourism. In this context, Gunung Kawi possesses unique characteristics as a religious destination evolving within a multicultural social environment. This study employs a qualitative approach with an ethnographic case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving tourism village managers, community leaders, local business actors, and tourists selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal four main themes: (1) religious tourism is understood as a spiritual practice integrating religious values, culture, and personal experience; (2) cultural and religious diversity forms an inclusive and harmonious multicultural tourism space; (3) tourists exhibit special interest tourism characteristics through intrinsic motivation, active involvement, and transformational experience; and (4) destination development faces challenges including visitor fluctuation, infrastructure limitations, and the risk of cultural commodification. This study contributes to strengthening the concept of religion- and multiculturalism-based special interest tourism within a sustainable tourism framework.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effects of tariff increases and facility quality on local tourists' intentions to visit the Baron Beach Area in Gunungkidul, with online customer reviews (OCR) mediating the relationship between them. The research is backed by a sharp decline in domestic arrivals following significant retributive tariff hikes, infrastructure constraints, and rising digital complaints. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design was used to gather data from 400 respondents selected via quota sampling across 23 beach sites. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) via SmartPLS 4. The results indicate that tariff increases and facility quality significantly influence visit intentions and OCR formulation. The mediation test shows that OCR serves as a strong partial mediator and is the dominant predictor of visit intentions. Destination managers are advised to improve tariff transparency and support facilities to optimize the destination's digital reputation

Abstract

The Bangka Belitung Islands province has great marine ecotourism potential, but the presentation of tourism information remains poorly integrated digitally and spatially. This study aims to identify the distribution and classification of priority tourist attractions and design a prototype of an interactive map based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a digital promotional medium and tourism education. The study uses a mixed-methods approach, with qualitative dominance at the design stage and quantitative support at the prototype evaluation stage. Spatial data processing was carried out using QGIS, the QGIS2Web plugin, and the Leaflet library, while prototype testing involved 30 respondents and employed descriptive analysis, validity and reliability assessments, and Pearson correlation tests in SPSS. The results showed that 33 priority tourist attractions were dominated by coastal areas and beach tourism. All instrument items were declared valid and reliable, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.944. The test results showed that all indicators were in the "Very Good" category, while the product feasibility level was 88.01%, placing it in the "Very Feasible" category. The correlation results also showed positive and significant relationships among the quality of the interactive map, the quality of the information, and the effectiveness of digital promotional media. Thus, the GIS-based interactive map prototype is considered an effective information and promotional medium for marine ecotourism in Bangka Belitung

Abstract

Kiarasari Tourism Village in Sukajaya District, Bogor Regency possesses various natural, cultural, and artificial tourism potentials that can be developed as a community-based tourism destination. However, the development of the tourism village still faces several challenges, particularly the lack of information media, limited destination publication, and the absence of systematic documentation of tourism potentials. This study aims to identify the tourism potentials of Kiarasari Village and analyze the preparation of a tourism potential profile book as a strategy for tourism village development and promotion. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method consisting of four stages: field surveys, data collection, in-depth interviews, and data analysis. Data were collected through field observations, documentation, literature studies, and interviews with the Tourism Village Working Group (Pokja), local communities, and village officials. The findings reveal that Kiarasari Village has diverse tourism potentials, including natural attractions such as waterfalls, rice fields, rivers, and camping grounds; cultural attractions in the form of local traditions and community activities; and artificial attractions such as tourism facilities and recreational areas. The study also indicates that the preparation of a tourism potential profile book serves as an important strategy to support destination documentation, promotion, and branding in a more systematic and informative manner. The profile book was designed using visual and descriptive approaches containing village profiles, tourism potentials, tourism facilities, local MSME products, and documentation of community activities. The existence of the profile book is expected to enhance the visibility of Kiarasari Tourism Village, strengthen destination identity, and support sustainable community-based tourism development.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of guest incivility during service recovery situations, particularly in complaint handling, on the psychological well-being of room division employees in hotels in South Sumatra. The hospitality industry requires intensive interaction between employees and guests, particularly during complaint handling, which may expose employees to uncivil behavior from guests. Such interactions can create emotional pressure and negatively affect employees’ psychological conditions. This research applied a quantitative approach using structured questionnaires distributed to 100 room division employees working in star hotels across South Sumatra. Data were analyzed using validity and reliability tests, as well as simple linear regression. The findings reveal that guest incivility occurs at a moderate level, with employees frequently experiencing it during service recovery situations, particularly when complaints are delivered impolitely. Psychological well-being indicators also show moderate levels, particularly in emotional exhaustion and psychological distress. The regression analysis shows a correlation coefficient of 0.568 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.323, indicating that guest incivility explains 32.3% of the variance in employees' psychological well-being. These findings highlight that repeated exposure to uncivil guest behavior can significantly influence employees' emotional stability and stress levels. Therefore, hotels should provide organizational support, emotional regulation training, and effective complaint handling systems to protect employees' psychological well-being.

Abstract

The tourism sector plays a strategic role in Indonesia's economy as a source of foreign exchange earnings and employment, and a driver of GDP growth. However, increased tourism activity has not been fully followed by a stable increase in its contribution to national economic growth. This study uses a quantitative approach, employing quarterly time-series data for the period 2015Q1–2025Q4 (44 observations). Variables analyzed include GDP growth (Y), foreign-exchange tourism (X1), hotel occupancy rate (X2), and exchange rate (X3). Analysis was conducted using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), preceded by ADF stationarity tests and Johansen cointegration tests. The Johansen cointegration test confirms the existence of two long-run equilibrium relationships among the study variables. VECM estimation shows that tourism foreign exchange has a positive and significant effect on GDP growth in the long run (t-statistic = -6.9478), hotel occupancy rate also has a significant positive effect (t-statistic = -2.8341), while the exchange rate is not statistically significant (t-statistic = 0.1857). All three variables jointly show significant long-run relationships with GDP, as confirmed by the two Johansen cointegrating equations. The hotel occupancy rate is the most dominant and consistent variable driving Indonesia’s GDP growth, based on VECM estimation. Foreign exchange from tourism has a positive and significant long-run effect on GDP, consistent with the Tourism-Led Growth Hypothesis. The exchange rate has no significant effect at the 5% level due to inconsistent relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development strategy of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) based spiritual tourism to strengthen the local economy surrounding Prambanan Temple. The shift in tourism toward meaningful, sustainable experiences has heightened the importance of spiritual tourism as an alternative development model. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach supported by qualitative analysis. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving 300 respondents consisting of local community members, tourism business actors and community leaders. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, SWOT analysis, and Value Chain Analysis to identify community perceptions, economic impacts, and appropriate development strategies. The findings indicate that community perceptions of spiritual tourism development are highly positive, with an average score of 4.24, while perceptions of its economic impact reached 4.14. Spiritual tourism is considered capable of increasing income, expanding employment opportunities, and supporting the growth of local SMEs. SWOT analysis places the development strategy in Quadrant I (Growth Strategy), indicating strong internal strengths and favorable external opportunities. Value Chain Analysis shows that the greatest economic benefits are generated through SMEs, local culinary businesses, homestays, tour guide services, transportation, and cultural handicrafts. CBT-based spiritual tourism has strong potential to improve community welfare while preserving cultural and spiritual values. Strengthening community participation, developing local tourism products, enhancing digital promotion, and increasing stakeholder collaboration are recommended to support sustainable tourism development around Prambanan Temple.

Abstract

The Wonorejo Mangrove Botanical Garden is a recommended tourist attraction for tourists exploring nature amidst the hustle and bustle of Surabaya. Although the Wonorejo Mangrove Botanical Garden boasts a rich mangrove ecosystem, diverse flora and fauna, and adequate tourist facilities, improvements are still needed. This study aims to analyze the development of the Wonorejo Mangrove Botanical Garden in Surabaya using the 4A approach, as well as the factors that inhibit and support tourism development. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicate that, overall, the development of the Wonorejo Mangrove Botanical Garden can be carried out by optimizing the 4A and mitigating inhibiting factors, thereby improving service quality and competitiveness while balancing economic, environmental, and socio-cultural benefits. This tourist attraction has the potential to be recommended as a natural tourist attraction with a superior ecotourism concept in Surabaya. The development of the Wonorejo Mangrove Botanical Garden in Surabaya is still in the potential stage and not yet optimal. For stakeholders, this can be done by optimizing the 4A components, mitigating the development factors of tourist attractions (both supporting and inhibiting), and adopting a sustainable approach.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology have prompted tourism companies to adopt appropriate business strategies and leverage digital marketing as a more effective marketing tool. This study aims to analyze the business strategies and digital marketing implementation employed by Amasari Tours and Travel to support sales and business development. The study employed observational, participatory, and on-the-job training methods. Data were collected through field observations, interviews with the director and the operational team, and a review of relevant documentation and literature. Data analysis was conducted descriptively to identify the various business strategies and digital marketing initiatives adopted by the company. The research findings indicate that the business strategies implemented included developing a proposal for cultural tours to Greece and analyzing the potential of tourist destinations in Ciater District, Subang, as part of efforts to create market opportunities and develop tourism products. Meanwhile, digital marketing initiatives included creating a logo and a TikTok account for Hiace Amasari, promoting tour packages via TikTok live streams, and creating an e-flyer promoting tourist destinations in West Java. These various activities demonstrate that a well-planned business strategy and the use of digital media can support promotion, expand market reach, and enhance a company’s competitiveness. Therefore, integrating business strategy and digital marketing is key to ensuring the sustainability of the tour and travel industry in the digital age.
