Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of the methodology of jarh wa ta‘dil by comparing the views of Yahya ibn Ma‘in, al-Dzahabi, and Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani. The background of this study lies in the fact that methodological understanding in hadith studies is still considered limited, as most existing hadith studies remain descriptive and have not yet emphasized comparative analysis of primary texts. This research employs a qualitative approach as well as a comparative-historical literature review. Data were collected through documentation of primary sources, namely Tarikh Ibn Ma‘in, Mizan al-I‘tidal, and Tahdzib al-Tahdzib, supported by secondary literature such as recent scholarly articles. The findings reveal that the methodology of jarh wa ta‘dil underwent transformation: Yahya ibn Ma‘in represented an empirical-individual approach, al-Dzahabi adopted a comparative-collective approach, and Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani developed a systematic approach. Through a method that compares primary texts and integrates a constructivist perspective in examining the development of hadith criticism methodology, this study enriches hadith scholarship, which constitutes its contribution. Practically, this research can serve as a foundation for critical and analytical hadith instruction.

Abstract

Takzim (reverence) is a common practice in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and is considered sacred when interacting with teachers. However, the diverse ways in which students (santri) express takzim have sparked public debate due to the lack of a clear boundary between genuine respect and individual cultism. Therefore, this study aims to delineate the boundary between reasonable and excessive takzim. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this field research was conducted at the Rubath Adz-Dzikra Lil Mu'minin Pesantren. The findings indicate that the analysis of takzim boundaries focuses on two prevalent practices at the institution: standing to welcome someone's arrival and bowing as a form of respect. The study reveals a divergence between the principles of Islamic education and modern education regarding the perception of teachers. Consequently, takzim practices within pesantren may be misconstrued as improper when viewed through the lens of modern educational philosophy. The results show differing scholarly opinions regarding bowing out of respect; some scholars deem it makruh (reprehensible), while others permit it provided it does not emulate the ruku' (bowing) position in prayer. Meanwhile, regarding standing to welcome someone, scholars agree that the practice is permissible, provided it does not foster arrogance or riya' (ostentation) in the individual being welcomed.

Abstract

Da'if hadith represents the most debated category in islamic scholarly tradition, particularly regarding its permissibility as a hujjah (legal proof) in both legal rulings and religious practice. this study aims to examine and compare the views of two prominent hadith scholars, ibn hajar al-asqalani and muhammad nashiruddin al-albani, on the status of da'if hadith as hujjah. a qualitative approach was employed through library research and comparative-analytical methods, drawing on primary sources from the authoritative works of both scholars and secondary sources comprising relevant academic journals and literature. the findings reveal that ibn hajar permitted the use of da'if hadith in the context of fadha'il al-a'mal, mau'izhah, targhib, tarhib, and i'tibar, subject to three strict conditions, reflecting a contextual paradigm in line with the consensus of classical scholars. al-albani, by contrast, rejected the use of da'if hadith entirely and without exception, on the grounds that such hadith yields only unverifiable conjecture. the divergence between the two scholars is not merely a matter of technical methodology, but reflects two fundamentally different paradigms regarding the function of hadith in religious life. this study contributes to filling a scholarly gap by systematically bringing both perspectives together within a single comparative framework.

Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of nasikh mansukh  in hadiths on the fast of Ashura, focusing on the quality of the sanad (chain of transmission), the chronological phases of the legal establishment, and the comparative views of scholars from four main schools of thought. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, this study explores primary sources from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, supplemented by books on hadith analysis, and comparative fiqh literature. The results show that the hadith of Ibn Abbas (Bukhari no. 2004) and the hadith of Aisha (Muslim no. 1125) represent two distinct legal phases, not actual contradictions: the first phase establishes the obligation of the fast of Ashura when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) arrived in Medina, and the second phase confirms the abolition of the obligation after the revelation of the Qur'anic verses on the fast of Ramadan (QS. Al-Baqarah: 183–185) in the second year of Hijriah. The nasikh process takes place through two complementary mechanisms: nasikh al-sunnah bil-sunnah (removal of the sunnah by the sunnah) and nasikh al-sunnah bil-Qur'an (removal of the sunnah by the Qur'an). The four schools of thought, Hanafi, Maliki, Syafi'i, and Hanbali, agree that the fast of Ashura now has the status of sunnah mu'akkadah (highly recommended), although there are differences of opinion regarding whether a formal obligation ever applied before. This research confirms that the Nasakh Mansukh  framework is an irreplaceable methodological instrument in resolving apparent contradictions in hadith and understanding the way Islamic law slowly developed and changed.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the understanding and implementation of tawakkal (reliance on God) among the fishing community in Kuala Silo Bestari Village and to analyze it through a Hadith perspective. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving local fishermen as research informants. The findings indicate that the fishermen's understanding of tawakkal generally maintains a balance between faith in Allah SWT and the execution of ikhtiar (effort). Despite variations in interpretation, the majority of fishermen view hard work as an inseparable component of tawakkal. In practice, tawakkal is reflected in their seafaring activities, such as preparations before departure, resilience in facing uncertain maritime conditions, and a state of ridha (contentment) regarding their catch. From a Hadith perspective, these understandings and practices align with the Prophet’s teachings, which emphasize the equilibrium between effort and submission to God. Consequently, the tawakkal practices of these fishermen can be categorized as "reliance through effort," demonstrating the phenomenon of "Living Hadith" within the community’s daily life.

Abstract

Hadith as a source of Islamic teachings after the Qur'an not only contains legal instructions and creed, but also contains profound educational values as reflected in the teaching methods of the Prophet PBUH. However, so far modern inclusive pedagogy has been built more through contemporary educational theory, while hadith has not been widely used as a basis for building the concept of inclusive pedagogy. This research aims to understand and analyze the concepts  of rifq (gentleness) and 'is (justice) in hadith as an important basis for inclusive pedagogy in a prophetic perspective. Using a thematic analysis approach, this study collects and examines relevant hadiths, then understands them textually and contextually, and enriches interpretation through classical scholars. The results of the study show that rifq reflects an educational ethics based on compassion, patience, wisdom, and communication that respects the condition of students, while 'is affirming the importance of justice, proportionate treatment, and rejection of all forms of discrimination. These two principles show that the Sunnah of the Prophet not only serves as the main reference, but also presents an educational perspective based on the Prophet's example that is humanistic, inclusive, and just.
