Abstract

This research focuses on a semiotic analysis of the logo and directional signs at the PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Medan Station. Utilizing Peirce's theory, this study identifies nine semiotic sign elements emerging from the analysis, with symbols dominating as the most frequently occurring element. The logo of PT KAI Medan, characterized by the use of dark blue color and a line crossing the letter "A," symbolically represents stability, professionalism, and reliability of the company, while directional signs within the company's environment are strategically positioned to provide clear information to station users. This research provides a profound understanding of the use of semiotic signs in assisting station users' navigation and offers a foundation for further research on the effectiveness of semiotic sign usage in the context of public transportation and its impact on user experience.

Abstract

This study discusses the language style and aims to find out the types of language styles used by Gibran Rakabuming Raka in political interaction 5 YouTube videos. This study is based on the theory of Martin Joos (1967) where the writer applied the descriptive-qualitative method to get the data. The findings show that only four types were used by Gibran Rakabuming in political interactions in 5 YouTube videos, such as frozen style, formal style, consultative style, and casual style. The writer also found 51 data that were appropriate with the characteristics of language style in the 5 YouTube videos. There are 7 extracts of frozen style with 13,7%, 10 extracts of formal style with 19,6%, 27 extracts of consultative style with 53%, and 7 extracts of casual style with 13,7%. The findings reveal that the consultative style is the most dominant used than the other style because Gibran used the consultation sentences involved in sharing information and the mention of visions, missions, and programs resonating and it is tended about the characteristic of consultative style.

Abstract

This research is entitled An Analysis of Verbal and Visual Signs in Scarlett’s Advertisement “Get ready to meet Song Joong Ki’s new love”. The purpose of this study is to analyze the verbal and visual signs found in the advertisement and to uncover the meanings behind those signs. This research applies Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory (1957), which consists of three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data were collected from the official Scarlett advertisement featuring Song Joong Ki, which was published on various digital platforms. The results of the study showed that there were four verbal signs, which consisted of four written verbal elements one audiovisual verbal element: Song Joong Ki’s spoken words in the video, Each of these verbal signs carries both denotative and connotative meanings that contribute to the advertisement’s persuasive power. The analysis shows that the advertisement uses both verbal and visual signs to deliver its message persuasively. The verbal signs, especially the slogan ―Get ready to meet Song Joong Ki’s new love,‖ are loaded with connotative meanings that create curiosity and emotional connection with the audience. Meanwhile, the visual signs—including color schemes (dominated by soft pink and white), product layout, Song Joong Ki’s gestures and facial expressions—complement the verbal messages and reinforce Scarlett’s brand identity. The study also reveals the presence of myths related to beauty standards, the influential power of celebrities, and the idealization of romantic love. Through this advertisement, Scarlett constructs a narrative that beauty, brightness, and love are attainable through the use of their products

Abstract

Abstract One of the main goals in learning English as an academic subject in Indonesia is to equip students with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. However, many students experience anxiety when asked to speak in English. These psychological barriers significantly inhibit their confidence and willingness to engage in verbal communication. This study explores the various forms and levels of anxiety experienced by students of the class of 2024 of the English Education Study Program at HKBP Nommensen University Medan. Using a qualitative method through a closed questionnaire and supported by class observation, this study identified emotional and behavioral indicators that are signs of language anxiety. The results show that most college students show moderate to high levels of anxiety, which often manifest in the form of fear, embarrassment, and hesitation when speaking in English. These findings confirm the importance of attention to affective factors in the language learning process to improve students' speaking skills and overall academic performance. Abstract

This study analyzes the translation ideology behind the English rendition of the Indonesian song "Hanya Rindu" by Andmesh Kamaleng, performed by Emma Heesters as "Just Missing You". Using Lawrence Venuti's framework of domestication and foreignization. the research investigates how ideological choices influence the emotional and cultural conveyance of song lyrics across languages Employing a qualitative descriptive method, twelve lyrical segments were examined to identify translation strategies and ideological tendencies. The results show a dominant use of domestication (58.3%), where the lyrics are adapted for emotional relatability and fluency in English, using strategies like modulation and adaptation Foreignization (41 7%) appears in instances preserving cultural elements, such as religious references and familial terms. The translator's use of five main strategies literal translation, modulation, adaptation, transposition, and reduction-demonstrates a flexible, nuanced approach to lyric translation. Abstract

Discourse analysis has become a central tool for exploring how classroom practices, institutional structures, and pedagogical ideologies are constructed and reproduced through language and multimodal communication. Despite its theoretical richness, a disconnect remains between discourse frameworks and their practical application in everyday educational research. This article addresses that gap by presenting a portfolio of four case studies that apply Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), multimodal analysis, and corpus-based methods across varied educational contexts. The studies include data from bilingual classrooms, teacher training modules, ESL instruction, and university-level workshops. Each case offers a distinct methodological design while collectively showcasing how discourse-analytic tools can reveal patterns of authority, inclusion, ideological framing, and pragmatic misalignment in educational settings. The findings emphasize the potential of discourse-based research to inform teaching practice, foster critical pedagogy, and expand methodological repertoires in educational inquiry.

Abstract

This study examines the translation errors made by fourth-semester English Education students at HKBP Nommensen University Medan when translating expository texts from Indonesian into English. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), the research classifies errors into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Data were collected from student translation assignments.The purpose of this study is to identify the types and frequency of errors as well as the translation strategies students used, in order to understand the linguistic and contextual challenges they face. The findings revealed that misformation errors were the most dominant (75.82%), followed by addition and omission (each 10.48%), and misordering (3.22%). All 20 participants relied heavily on literal translation techniques, which often resulted in unnatural sentence structures and incorrect grammatical forms. This study highlights the need for more targeted grammar instruction, sentence restructuring exercises, and contextual vocabulary training. It contributes to the existing literature on translation errors in academic texts and offers practical insights for improving translation pedagogy and curriculum development in English education programs.

Abstract

This research examines the translation techniques employed in the English version of the Indonesian song "Cintanya Aku", performed by Dutch artist Emma Heesters. Music translation requires maintaining linguistic meaning alongside artistic aspects like emotion, rhythm, and cultural context; thus, this study utilizes Peter Newmark’s translation theory to analyze and categorize the employed methods. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the researchers analyzed the original Indonesian lyrics (source language) alongside their English translation (target language). The analysis indicates that Emma Heesters' translation mainly employs communicative and literal methods, along with supplementary uses of semantic and free translation techniques. The results indicate that the translation approach emphasizes emotional transparency and cultural reach for English-speaking viewers, in line with the principle of domestication. This guarantees that the lyrical elements continue to be emotionally impactful and contextually appropriate in the desired language. Ultimately, the research emphasizes the significance of strategic translation methods in cross-cultural music adaptation.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using video media to improve students’ skills for public speaking. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research involved 50 second-year nursing students from Universitas YPIB Majalengka, selected through purposive sampling. Quantitative data were obtained using pre-test and post-test assessments to evaluate students’ speaking performance before and after the video-based intervention. Additionally, qualitative data were obtained through a close-ended questionnaire to explore students’ perceptions of using videos as a learning tool. The results of the paired t-test analysis showed a statistically significant improvement in students’ public speaking abilities, with the t-observed value (2.24) exceeding the t-critical value (2.015). Furthermore, the questionnaire responses indicated that approximately 80% of the participants responded positively to the use of videos, reporting increased motivation, confidence, and engagement. These findings suggest that video media, particularly authentic and inspirational video talks, can be an effective tool for developing public speaking skills among students. The study concludes with recommendations for institutions, teachers, and future researchers to further support and explore the integration of video-based instruction in language learning

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problem, namely second semester students in the English Education Program FSB UNG face the problem of lack of knowledge in composing narrative texts, especially strategies for getting ideas and organizing them into paragraphs. This condition makes most students reluctant to learn to write. There are complicated rules in writing that cannot be ignored, when students write something, they must pay more attention to spelling, punctuation, diction, grammar, the purpose of their writing, and their own writing ideas. In addition, they are confused about how to start writing ideas into a good narrative text. This study collected qualitative data using observation techniques, narrative writing tests, and interviews. The results are; first, students have difficulty organizing ideas in narrative writing. Second; lack of vocabulary, which makes students write sentences that are less communicative. Finally; students are confused about the correctness of the grammar they compose. Based on the results of the analysis, the researcher concluded that there are three reasons that cause students to have difficulty in starting to write. First, organizing ideas, when students are able to express what they want to write but have difficulty putting it into written form. Second, a lack of vocabulary leads students to write less communicative sentences. Finally, due to a lack of grammatical accuracy, students are confused about their writing. Previous research has found similar student difficulties with vocabulary, grammar, and linguistics, including research by Marzona et al. (2019), Nandha et al. (2022), and Fadilah et al. (2024). All of these issues make it difficult for students to begin writing.
