Abstract

Despite growing awareness of the harms of secondhand smoke, rural communities often lack targeted interventions that empower passive smokers through education and communication training. Previous studies have primarily focused on tobacco control from the smoker's perspective, with limited integration of assertive communication as a preventive tool. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of educational outreach combined with assertive communication training in increasing knowledge and behavioral skills among residents exposed to secondhand smoke in Sarroanging Hamlet, Jeneponto District. Employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, the intervention included psychoeducation sessions on the dangers of passive smoking and structured assertive communication role plays. Data were collected using pretest and posttest questionnaires alongside observational assessments. Findings revealed a significant increase in knowledge scores from 65.67 to 81.00 post-intervention. Additionally, there was notable improvement in assertive behavior, as participants demonstrated enhanced ability to express objections, reject invitations to tolerate indoor smoking, and issue warnings to active smokers. Role-playing exercises effectively reinforced these behaviors. This community-based approach highlights the value of combining educational and behavioral strategies to reduce secondhand smoke exposure, offering a replicable model for rural public health interventions.

Abstract

The utilization of health services in rural Indonesia remains suboptimal, with a significant proportion of households not accessing health care facilities despite available infrastructure. Previous studies have largely overlooked the nuanced role of transportation in facilitating or hindering access to care in remote areas. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the utilization of health services in Maccini Ayo Hamlet, Bontomanai Village, Jeneponto Regency. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted among all household heads (n=59) in the study area. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test to determine associations between selected socio-demographic and accessibility variables and health service utilization. The study found a statistically significant association between the type of vehicle used and the utilization of health services (p=0.000). Conversely, no significant associations were found for age, educational attainment, occupation, income, travel distance, travel time, or health insurance ownership. These findings underscore the pivotal role of transportation access in influencing health-seeking behavior in rural settings. Enhancing mobility infrastructure could thus be a strategic focus for public health interventions aimed at increasing healthcare access in similar regions

Abstract

Immunization remains a vital intervention for reducing child morbidity and mortality, yet coverage in several rural areas, including Borong Loe Hamlet, remains suboptimal. Previous studies have largely overlooked the role of local health volunteers, such as Posyandu cadres, in strengthening immunization data systems through simple, context-based tools. This study evaluates the effectiveness of using a structured logbook by Posyandu cadres to monitor child immunization activities. The intervention involved distributing a logbook containing 13 structured work plans, followed by a six-month implementation period. Evaluation was conducted using three key indicators: completeness, consistency, and timeliness of recording. Findings revealed an average score of 5.17 out of 10, categorized as “fair,” with consistency scoring highest (5.6) and timeliness lowest (4.6). These results suggest that the logbook facilitates systematic documentation by cadres but highlights the need for continuous training and the provision of visual guidelines to enhance recording accuracy. The logbook model offers a scalable and context-sensitive approach to improving immunization monitoring in resource-limited rural settings. Implications point to the potential of empowering local health actors through targeted tools and support systems to strengthen public health data quality and surveillance mechanisms.

Abstract

Improper management of disposable diaper waste remains a persistent environmental concern, especially in rural areas where public awareness and infrastructure are limited. Previous studies have often overlooked community-based educational interventions focused on diaper waste processing. This study aims to improve community knowledge on waste separation and disposable diaper waste management through a targeted empowerment program in Kelurahan Tamalabba, South Sulawesi. Conducted as part of the CSR initiative of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga IT Makassar, the program involved 20 residents of RW 4 and employed a combination of socialization, interactive discussions, and hands-on training. Baseline data revealed only 20% of participants had good knowledge of diaper waste handling. Following the intervention, this figure increased to 75%, indicating a substantial improvement. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of hydrothermal technology as a feasible solution for diaper waste processing in rural settings, while simultaneously emphasizing the role of participatory education in fostering environmental responsibility. These findings highlight the potential of localized CSR-supported programs to enhance public health outcomes by addressing unmanaged sanitary waste in underserved areas.

Abstract

Occupational eye disorders, particularly photokeratitis, have received limited attention in developing regions, despite their significant impact on worker productivity. This study aimed to assess the relationship between photokeratitis symptoms and work productivity among electric welders in Gowa Regency, Indonesia. Employing an observational design with a cross-sectional approach, data were collected from 63 electric welders across 14 welding workshops in Samata Subdistrict, Somba Opu District. The presence of photokeratitis symptoms and productivity levels were assessed through structured interviews and categorized accordingly. Statistical analysis using the chi-square test (α=0.05) revealed that 75.0% of respondents with photokeratitis symptoms were less productive, while only 25.0% remained productive. Conversely, among those without symptoms, 87.0% were productive, and 13.0% were less productive. The association between photokeratitis and productivity was statistically significant (p=0.001; OR=20.000). These findings underscore the critical role of occupational eye health in sustaining productivity in rural industrial settings. Public health interventions, including the promotion of personal protective equipment and workplace safety education, are imperative to mitigate productivity loss among welders.

Abstract

Iodine deficiency remains a significant nutritional issue in Indonesia, particularly affecting rural communities with limited access to accurate health information. This research-based community engagement aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention on household knowledge and practices related to iodized salt usage in Bontobakka Hamlet, Jeneponto Regency. The intervention employed a door-to-door campaign using poster media and involved 31 female respondents who were assessed at three time points: pre-intervention, post-intervention, and six months post-intervention. The study utilized a summative evaluative approach based on the CIPP model (Context, Input, Process, Product) to measure program impact. The Friedman test revealed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge levels (p = 0.028), with 87.1% of participants achieving a "good" knowledge score at the final assessment. Integration of religious values through Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 168 enhanced community acceptance, demonstrating the importance of culturally sensitive messaging. The findings underscore the value of combining visual, contextual, and faith-based strategies to promote iodized salt consumption and address Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) in rural Indonesia.

Abstract

Despite the longstanding use of herbal remedies to support maternal health, particularly during lactation, existing research has yet to systematically explore the intersection of traditional practices, digital media influence, and public trust. This study aims to analyze how herbal beliefs are represented, trusted, and potentially distorted through digital platforms, and to assess the effectiveness of herbal interventions in enhancing breast milk production in Indonesia. Employing a systematic literature review methodology in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, the study examined 24 peer-reviewed articles sourced from Google Scholar, focusing on public perception, misinformation, and trust in herbal remedies. Additionally, 25 studies on breastfeeding interventions were reviewed to evaluate the outcomes of herbal-based and educational approaches. Results indicate that while herbal galactagogues such as Moringa leaves, katuk, and dates consistently improve lactation outcomes, digital media plays a dual role—facilitating both accurate health education and the spread of unverified claims. Educational interventions enhanced maternal understanding and acceptance of herbal remedies, especially when supported by community engagement and digital tools. However, variations in efficacy across contexts and limited clinical validation signal the need for more rigorous trials. The findings underscore the importance of culturally integrated, evidence-based strategies in maternal health promotion and call for the careful regulation of online health information to safeguard public trust and maternal well-being.

Abstract

Despite extensive global efforts, HIV/AIDS continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, particularly among high-risk populations such as female sex workers. Previous studies have highlighted persistent gaps in HIV/AIDS knowledge and inadequate preventive practices within this community. This study aimed to enhance knowledge and preventive behaviors regarding HIV/AIDS among female sex workers in Makassar City through a structured, community-based intervention. Conducted in May 2025 in Panakukang District, the intervention employed participatory health education methods, including interactive counseling, focus group discussions, and condom-use simulations. A pre- and post-test design was used to evaluate changes in knowledge and behavior. Findings demonstrated a substantial improvement in knowledge scores, increasing from a mean of 54.2 to 85.7. Furthermore, the rate of consistent condom use rose from 62% to 87% following the intervention. The results underscore the effectiveness of community-based, interactive educational approaches in promoting HIV/AIDS prevention. These findings have significant implications for public health strategies targeting similar high-risk urban populations.

Abstract

Previous studies on household waste management have predominantly focused on urban settings with established infrastructure, leaving a gap in the understanding of waste-related behaviors in remote island communities. This study explores the behavior of residents toward household waste management on Barrang Lompo Island, Kecamatan Sangkarrang, South Sulawesi. Employing a quantitative descriptive observational design, this research surveyed 307 respondents from a total of 1,324 households using non-probability convenience sampling. The independent variables included knowledge, attitude, and practice, while the dependent variable was household waste management. The results revealed that community knowledge was predominantly good (76.6%), although attitudes were mainly less favorable (60.2%), and actions were generally poor (51.5%). These findings suggest that while awareness is relatively high, it has not translated into consistent behavior, indicating a disconnect between knowledge and practice. The study underscores the urgent need for targeted environmental education, local regulation, and collaboration with public agencies to enhance sustainable waste practices. These implications are especially vital for remote and densely populated island communities where poor waste handling poses severe environmental and public health risks.

Abstract

Recent advancements in healthcare technology have introduced innovations such as the Mobile JKN queuing system, designed to streamline outpatient registration and enhance patient convenience. However, there remains a gap in understanding patient experiences and satisfaction with these digital interventions in rural hospital settings. This study aimed to explore and describe outpatient experiences using the Mobile JKN queuing system and assess satisfaction levels at Stella Maris Hospital in Makassar. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation with outpatients, BPJS officers, and outpatient department leaders. Findings revealed diverse patient experiences, with some respondents expressing appreciation for reduced on-site waiting times, while others were dissatisfied due to extended waiting despite app registration. Additional factors influencing satisfaction included lack of social interaction, inaccurate information, inconsistent scheduling, and limited doctor availability. Relational, functional, and service integration issues contributed to negative perceptions and identified existing gaps in the digital queuing system. These insights underscore the need for ongoing evaluation and targeted improvements in digital health service delivery in rural areas, with implications for optimizing patient-centered care and technology adoption.
