Abstract

This research examines the role of figurative language, particularly similes, in expressing abstract emotions through vivid imagery in The Weeknd’s selected songs. The study aims to identify explicit similes marked by like and as and analyze how their connotative meanings reflect disappointment, heartbreak, and falling in love. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using the lyrics of Adaptation, King of the Fall, and Nothing Compares as the main data. The data were collected through documentation and analyzed through identification, classification, interpretation, and explanation based on Leech’s theory of meaning. The results identified nine similes across the three songs. Two similes in Adaptation reflect disappointment and self-regret, particularly concerning the singer’s inability to maintain a pure and sincere relationship. Five similes in King of the Fall express heartbreak through emotional burden, exhaustion, despair, and relational emptiness. Meanwhile, two similes in Nothing Compares represent falling in love through emotional attachment, admiration, and the uniqueness of romantic connection. These findings demonstrate that similes function not merely as decorative literary devices but as important semantic tools that transform abstract emotional experiences into concrete and meaningful imagery, strengthening emotional expression and enabling listeners to better understand the themes conveyed in contemporary song lyrics.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in students’ mathematical critical thinking skills between those who receive ethnomathematics-based Group Investigation (GI) cooperative learning and those who receive direct instruction on the Pythagorean Theorem, to determine the magnitude of the model’s effect, and to describe students’ learning activities during the learning process. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Posttest-Only Control Group Design. The research sample consisted of 56 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 8 Singkawang, with Class VIII A serving as the experimental group and Class VIII B as the control group, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an essay test measuring mathematical critical thinking skills and a learning activity observation sheet. Data analysis included normality and homogeneity tests, an independent-samples t-test, effect size analysis, and the percentage of learning activities. The results showed that the experimental group obtained a mean posttest score of 79.83, while the control group obtained 64.84.

Abstract

The basic concepts of geography are the first materials that senior high school students need to master. However, students at SMAN Biudukfoho still experience difficulties in understanding these concepts. This study aims to describe the difficulties experienced by students and the factors contributing to these difficulties. This qualitative study analyzed data using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research subjects were 35 tenth-grade social science students and two geography teachers. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and students’ daily test results. The findings show that students experienced difficulties in understanding the concepts, principles, and approaches of geography, with the greatest difficulties occurring in geographical principles and approaches. The factors contributing to learning difficulties consisted of external and internal factors. External factors included uninteresting teaching methods, the lack of teacher reflection, the abstract nature of basic geography concepts, high demands of the Merdeka Curriculum, and teaching materials and media that were less contextual and did not sufficiently utilize geospatial information. Internal factors included low independence, cooperation, attention, and poor study habits. To improve learning quality, teachers are encouraged to conduct classroom action research, implement peer tutoring, collaborate with colleagues, guidance and counseling teachers, and parents, innovate teaching practices, and improve their professional competence.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of developing students' religious character as an integral part of the goals of Islamic education, especially amidst globalization, technological advances, and the increasingly complex moral challenges facing the younger generation. This study aims to analyze the madrasa climate and culture in enhancing student religiosity at MIN 6 Tangerang. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the madrasa principal, teachers, educational staff, and students. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested through source and technique triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the madrasah climate at MIN 6 Tangerang is formed through harmonious relationships between teachers and students, the habit of discipline, teacher role models, and a religious atmosphere reflected in learning activities both outside and inside the classroom. The madrasah culture is realized through various religious habituation programs, such as reciting prayers before and after learning, congregational Duha prayer, congregational Dhuhr prayer, tadarus Al-Qur'an, memorization of short surahs, commemoration of Islamic holidays, alms and charity, the culture of greeting, smiling, greeting, being polite, and courteous (5S), as well as the habituation of akhlakul karimah in social interactions within the madrasah environment. The impact of the implementation of the madrasah climate and culture on increasing the religiosity of fifth and sixth grade students at MIN 6 Tangerang is seen, among others, in changes in student behavior who are more devout in worship, have noble morals, are disciplined, independent, have critical reasoning, and have social sensitivity. The madrasah climate and culture also helps in learning focus, increases learning enthusiasm, and facilitates understanding of concepts through links to Islamic values.
