Abstract

This study analyzes the news text on the online mass media detik.com titled "Jule's Infidelity Issue, Na Daehoon: I am strong for the sake of the children" using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis model. This research aims to reveal how the discourse of infidelity is constructed in media texts thru subject and object positioning, how character representation is displayed, how the reader's position is directed, the use of narrative structure, and the social context and gender ideology underlying the construction of this discourse. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method with the data source being a news text published on detik.com. Data collection techniques were carried out thru document study by carefully reading and recording linguistic units relevant to the research focus, while data analysis techniques used Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis model. The research findings indicate that Na Daehoon is positioned as the dominant subject, possesses voice legitimacy, and is positively represented as a strong and responsible male figure. Conversely, Jule is positioned as the object of news coverage, receiving no opportunity for clarification and being implicitly represented as the problematic party. Additionally, the narrative structure and language choices used in the news text also guide readers to build sympathy toward the male subject. The findings indicate that the analyzed news coverage is not neutral, but rather tends to reproduce patriarchal gender ideologies that could potentially influence society's perception of women in cases of infidelity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the short story “Siapakah Keluarga dari Tubuh yang Kacau Itu?” by Radja Sinaga using structural and moral approaches in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of its content and meaning. The structural approach is employed to examine intrinsic elements, including theme, characters and characterization, plot, setting, point of view, language style, and message. Meanwhile, the moral approach is used to reveal the ethical values and life lessons contained in the short story. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through library research by means of intensive reading and systematic note-taking of the text. The results show that the short story demonstrates a strong structural unity, with the main theme focusing on human suffering caused by war and the loss of family. In addition, several moral values are identified, such as humanity, familial love, criticism of violence, loss of identity, and resilience in facing suffering. The use of the second-person point of view also strengthens the reader’s emotional engagement with the story. Therefore, the combination of structural and moral approaches provides a deeper understanding of the meaning of the short story and its relevance to real-life contexts. This study is expected to enrich literary studies and enhance readers’ appreciation of literary works.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to describe students’ motivation toward online learning at Universitas Negeri Medan and to identify the underlying reasons for such motivation. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design, utilizing the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) motivational model and Expectancy-Value Theory as the theoretical frameworks. Data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed to 34 English Education students and semi-structured interviews with 5 purposively selected participants. The results indicated that all four components of the ARCS model were in the moderate category, with mean scores of 3.16 for Attention, 3.29 for Relevance, 3.20 for Confidence and 3.20 for Satisfaction. While students appreciated the flexibility and accessibility of online materials (high utility value), they frequently experienced boredom and mental fatigue due to limited social interaction and the "artificial" nature of screen based learning (high cost and low intrinsic value). The study concludes that students remain motivated primarily due to professional aspirations rather than engaging instructional designs. These findings suggest that educators should implement more interactive strategies to enhance student engagement in digital environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of educational marketing management in increasing the interest of new students at MTs Negeri 3 Bekasi City, with a focus on the application of the POAC management functions (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling). The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study design. Primary data were obtained through observation and in-depth interviews with the Madrasah Principal and the Vice Principal for Student Affairs, who serves as the Chair of the PMBM Committee, while secondary data were sourced from relevant journals and literature. The research results indicate that marketing planning was carried out systematically through the formation of the PMBM committee, academic, religious, and Quranic literacy selection processes, as well as the utilization of digital and print media. Organization involved all school components in a structured manner, while promotional activities highlighted students’ academic, non-academic, and moral achievements through social media and word of mouth. This strategy proved effective, as evidenced by the number of applicants far exceeding the admission quota. However, implementation still faces challenges related to funding, limited land availability, and public perceptions regarding the difficulty of the selection process, which are addressed through routine evaluations and collaboration with government agencies.

Abstract

The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot, and machine translation has reshaped how English is learned in higher education. Working students, who must balance employment and study under severe time constraints, represent a learner group whose needs differ from those of conventional full-time students, yet they remain underexplored in the literature. This article is a conceptual review that synthesises current scholarship to examine the potential and the risks of AI-assisted English learning for working students. Using a narrative literature review of studies published between 2018 and 2024, the discussion is organised around five dimensions that mirror common acceptance frameworks: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, learning effectiveness, learner concerns, and the working-student context. Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model, self-regulated learning theory, and andragogy, the article argues that AI offers meaningful affordances (instant feedback, personalisation, flexibility, anxiety-free practice) that align well with the fragmented schedules of working learners, while also posing risks of over-reliance, inaccurate output, loss of cultural and human interaction, and data-privacy concerns. The article proposes a conceptual framework and five propositions positioning AI as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, the teacher, and recommends a blended human-AI model built on micro-learning, workplace-relevant content, and critical AI literacy. Implications for institutions, lecturers, and learners, together with directions for future empirical testing, are discussed.
