Abstract

This study aims to investigate the factors influencing English teachers’ preferences for textbooks provided by private-sector publishers, with a focus on teachers in SMP 09 Tegal, Indonesia. The importance of textbooks in the teaching-learning process is crucial, as well as selecting appropriate textbook used in the classroom. Despite the availability of textbooks from both government and private-sector publishers, there is limited research on teachers’ preferences in this context. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological approach that involves in-depth interviews and observations of English teachers and students at SMP N 09 Tegal. Participants included three experienced English teachers and one chairman of the MGMP Bahasa Inggris (English Teacher Forum), as well as three students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected and analyzed thematically to uncover the underlying factors influencing textbook selection, teachers’ perception towards the use of private-sector publisher’s textbook, and challenges in the use of textbook by private-sector publisher’s textbook. The findings reveal that content quality and variety, including the incorporation of practice questions and visual media, are significant factor in teachers’ textbook preferences. Teachers also value textbooks’ usability, practicality, readability, and the availability of supplementary materials. Despite generally positive perceptions of textbook by private-sector publisher, several challenges have been identified., such as language and content complexity, lack of local context, and infrastructure limitations. Student related challenges include diverse characteristics and varying levels of English proficiency that needs adaptable teaching strategies from teachers. Therefore, this study suggests that government through Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research can make textbook that better suits the needs of students and teachers in the classroom in order to benefit Indonesian education in general. Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating the effectiveness of Virtual Ice Breaker strategy in improving students’ speaking skill in online learning. A quasi experimental design was employed with two classes of the seventh graders at SMP Negeri 2 Purwokerto selected with cluster random sampling as sampling method. The students were divided into two groups namely the experimental group and the control group. The data were obtained through speaking test, observation and interview. The speaking assessment was covering pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. The computation results showed that Virtual Ice-Breaker strategy was effective in improving the students’ speaking skill where the experimental group got the best score (80.14) than the control group (73.13). Furthermore, in determining the final result, the Independent Sample T-Test was calculated. The significance score (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05, it means the Alternative Hypothesis was accepted and Null Hypothesis was rejected where there was a significant effect between the experimental and the control group. In other words, students’ speaking skill have improved. This result was supported with the observation and interview in experimental group. The students gave a good response and showed enthusiasm during the use of the Virtual Ice-Breaker strategy in speaking skill. In conclusion, the use of Virtual Ice-Breaker strategy in teaching speaking is effective to improve students’ speaking skill in online learning of the seventh grade students in SMP N 2 Purwokerto. The teachers may try to take advantage of Ice-Breaker stragey to be utilized in their online classroom activities to conduct an effective and interesting learning atmosphere.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of using Google Translate’s Speech-to-Text feature for learning English pronunciation. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research was conducted with seven purposively selected X TKJ 5 (Computer and Network Engineering) students at SMK HKTI 2 Purwareja Klampok during the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observations, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s qualitative approach. The findings reveal that students had predominantly positive perceptions. They found Google Translate’s Speech-to-Text enjoyable, engaging, and more effective than traditional methods. Observational data confirmed students' enthusiasm, while 71.4% appreciated its low data consumption and all students (100%) agreed it effectively identified pronunciation errors and corrections. Additionally, students highlighted the tool's ease of use, flexibility, and user-friendly interface, affirming its value as an effective medium for learning pronunciation.

Abstract

This research retells stories of Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers regarding their experience employing different types of assessments in their classrooms. The research aims to understand how educators in Indonesia view assessment practices in EFL learning environments. A qualitative approach using narrative inquiry research type was used along with semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation as data collection methods. Four EFL teachers from two vocational high schools in Central Java, Indonesia, were recruited to describe the types of learning assessments used and the perceived benefits and challenges of various assessment methods. The findings reveal that EFL teachers face various challenges in designing assessments, including ensuring student honesty and aligning assessments with learning objectives. The research also highlights the importance of formative and summative assessments, as well as the integration of Assessment for Learning (AfL), Assessment of Learning (AoL), and Assessment as Learning (AaL) in the assessment process. The results of this research provide valuable insights for policymakers, curriculum developers, and educational institutions to improve assessment policies and practices, better aligning them with the goals of EFL education in Indonesia.

Abstract

English learning in the digital era requires the use of innovative and interactive learning media to improve the effectiveness of learning, especially in elementary schools. This study analysis the importance of developing interactive English learning media in elementary schools. The study used a qualitative method by conducting observations and interviews with teachers of MI 02 Mulyasari Majenang. The results showed that the learning media used were still one-way or not interactive. While many studies have shown that interactive learning media can make learning more interesting and effective. Therefore, interactive learning media are needed in English learning in elementary schools. One of the interactive media that can be used by teachers is media based on articulate Storyline 3.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how high school students perceive the Duolingo app as a medium for learning English in the classroom. It also aims to analyze the impact of the app on students' English proficiency and evaluate how students respond to learning using the app. The methodology used in this high school research is semi-structured interview and school observation using qualitative research approach to collect data. The results of the data obtained by the researcher, showed that using the Duolingo application as an English learning media succeeded in increasing the percentage of students' interest in learning English as a foreign language, so that students can easily learn English and explore various skills by practicing questions that have been provided in the application. Applying the media in the learning process also supports students to learn English independently.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Wordwall application in enhancing English vocabulary learning among fifth-grade students at SDN 4 Balangnipa. Using a quantitative approach with an experimental research design, the study involved 21 students who were assessed through pre-test and post-test evaluations, classroom observations, and questionnaires. Results demonstrated a significant improvement in students' vocabulary acquisition after implementing the Wordwall application, with post-test scores showing marked increases compared to pre-test scores. Statistical analysis using Paired Sample T-Test yielded a significance value of 0.000, indicating that the Wordwall application is highly effective for vocabulary instruction. Classroom observations revealed increased student engagement and enthusiasm during learning activities, while questionnaire responses showed positive student attitudes toward the interactive learning medium. The findings suggest that the Wordwall application provides an engaging, interactive platform that effectively enhances vocabulary acquisition through gamified learning experiences. This research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting technology-based applications as valuable tools for vocabulary instruction in elementary education settings

Abstract

Mastering listening comprehension remains a significant challenge for EFL university students. This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the mastery of listening comprehension among these students. A survey design was employed, involving English Education Department students from the classes of 2020–2023. The data collection methods used were closed-ended questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed several factors affecting students' listening comprehension, categorized into four main areas: listening content, speakers, physical setting, and listeners. Listening content emerged as the most influential factor, with unfamiliar vocabulary, audio quality, and speech rate presenting significant challenges. Other notable factors included pronunciation and accent variations, environmental distractions, and students' motivation and proficiency levels. They suggest that teachers and students should collaboratively identify learning strategies tailored to address specific challenges in listening comprehension. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of carefully selecting listening materials that align with students' proficiency levels, particularly in terms of vocabulary. Finally, the findings indicate a need for strategies to enhance student motivation and encourage regular listening practice. This research contributes to our understanding of the complexities involved in EFL listening comprehension and provides valuable insights for improving teaching and learning strategies in this critical language skill.
