Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and meanings of homonyms in the dialogues of the film *Laskar Pelangi* by Riri Riza and to assess their suitability as teaching materials for Indonesian vocabulary. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using content analysis on 123 dialogues, which were designated as units of analysis. The research data consists of words that meet the criteria for homonymy based on similarity in form, difference in meaning, and contextual relevance. The results indicate the presence of 20 instances of homonymy, evenly divided into 10 cases of pure homonymy and 10 cases of partial homonymy. Analytically, the findings reveal that homonymy in films tends to occur in lexemes closely related to the characters’ daily experiences and shifts from concrete to more abstract meanings, such as “road,” “heat,” “head,” and “hard.” Their meanings cannot be explained by lexical factors alone but are determined by multimodal context, namely the scene’s situation, inter-character relationships, intonation, and expressions. The suitability of films as teaching materials is demonstrated by three factors: the use of lexemes familiar to students, the presence of a clear social context, and the availability of audiovisual cues that aid in meaning interpretation. Thus, this study contributes to semantic research by emphasizing the importance of multimodal context in the interpretation of homonyms, while also proposing films as a medium for contextual and interpretive vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of code-mixing, its triggering factors, and the impact of its use in Indonesian language instruction for seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Ruteng. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The research subjects were seventh-grade teachers and students who are bilingual speakers (Manggarai and Indonesian). Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that code-mixing occurs in the form of words and phrases, with a predominance of word-level code-mixing. Triggers for code-mixing include efforts to create a friendly atmosphere, providing examples, explaining material, asking questions, and responding to answers, with creating a friendly atmosphere being the most dominant factor. The findings also show that the practice of code-mixing does not have negative effects but rather aids student comprehension and fosters a more comfortable learning environment. This study contributes to the development of educational sociolinguistic research by demonstrating that code-mixing can function as an effective communication strategy in learning within a bilingual environment. Furthermore, the results of this study provide practical implications for Indonesian language teachers to utilize code-mixing appropriately as part of their teaching strategies without neglecting the proper and correct use of the Indonesian language. Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of perlocutionary effects and language strategies in Indonesian-language commercial advertisements on Facebook and TikTok. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. Data were collected through observation and note-taking on commercial advertisements across the categories of beauty products, food and beverages, financial services, fashion, and digital entertainment during the period of January–March 2025. The results indicate that in beauty and nutrition product advertisements, perlocutionary effects manifest as cognitive beliefs; in financial services advertisements, as perceptions of affordability; in fashion advertisements, as self-identification; and in digital entertainment advertisements, as emotional engagement. The primary strategies identified include the use of numerical data claims to build credibility, life-scenario narratives for self-identification, and directive operational instructions to encourage immediate action. Interactive characteristics of social media, such as the comment response format on TikTok, were found to amplify perlocutionary power by creating the illusion of personal communication—a condition where the audience feels directly and individually addressed by the advertiser, even though the message is simultaneously directed at millions of users. Digital context and human presenter engagement emerged as the primary determinants of message effectiveness. This research confirms that advertising language on social media functions as a strategic instrument capable of directing the audience’s perceptions and economic behavior through psychological and linguistic manipulation integrated with platform features
