Abstract

The Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) in Indonesia still has problems in developing narrative writing skills in the practicum stage. This classroom action research is therefore aimed at discovering the effect of systematic application of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle system (CE, RO, AC, and AE) in the practicum experience in PPG on the improvement of narrative writing skills of high school students. In this article, we collected data from 36 students of Grade XI of SMAN 2 Mataram and a pre-service teacher of PPG through a narrative writing task, observation, and a reflective journal. In total, six dimensions were analysed: narrative structure, outline development, cohesion, vocabulary, word count accuracy and writing mechanics. Results showed definite improvements with average scores going from 83 to 89, and general improvement in consistency throughout the class. The greatest improvements were in coherence, writing mechanics, and outline development. The findings indicate that Kolb’s cycle enhances students’ writing outcomes as well as the professional development of pre-service teachers in practice at their teacher schools by incorporating writing cycle activities and applications into their teaching.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines diary writing as a private reflective practice among female students in Islamic boarding schools characterized by strong behavioral and communication norms. Previous studies have generally positioned diary writing as either a therapeutic expressive practice or language-learning exercise. Limited attention has been given to how diary writing simultaneously functions as an emotional regulation and reflective literacy practice within highly regulated boarding-school environments. This study aimed to identify patterns of emotional regulation in students’ diary writing and examine how personal diary experiences are transformed into short fictional narratives. Using a case study diary-study design at Bahrul Huda Islamic Boarding School in Pamekasan, Indonesia, 20 female students aged 13–15 years wrote daily diaries over a one-month period. Data were collected through diary documents, perception questionnaires, and short stories developed from selected diary entries. The data were analyzed thematically, descriptively, and through genre-transfer assessment. The findings indicate that diary writing functions as a perceived safe space for emotional expression and reflective self-evaluation. Most participants demonstrated a recurring emotional pattern involving stressful experiences, emotional labelling, cathartic release, reflection, and personal resolution. However, the transfer from reflective diary writing to short-story writing remained limited, as many students produced narrative texts that were weakly connected to their original diary experiences and still dominated by report-like storytelling. This study contributes to understanding how private reflective writing mediates emotional regulation and literacy development within restrictive educational environments and highlights the importance of gradual genre scaffolding in creative writing instruction.

Abstract

The inner conflict experienced by women in manipulative relationships is often viewed as an individual problem, yet this experience is closely tied to the dynamics of power and social pressures that shape identity. The memoir, “Broken Strings: Pieces of Broken Youth,” depicts the psychological struggles of a woman who has endured emotional abuse and relational control. This study aims to analyze the representation of the protagonist’s inner conflict using Karen Horney’s feminist psychoanalytic theory, specifically the concepts of basic anxiety, neurotic needs, and the tension between the real self and the ideal self. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data consisting of text excerpts from the memoir were analyzed through close reading, thematic categorization, and interpretation based on Horney’s theoretical framework. The results indicate that the character’s inner conflict stems from basic anxiety formed within an insecure relationship, subsequently developing through neurotic needs as defense strategies (approaching, rejecting, and withdrawing), and culminating in identity fragmentation manifested as self-rebellion, loss of self-autonomy, and feelings of worthlessness due to the gap between the authentic self and the ideal self created by patriarchal pressure. In the final phase, the character demonstrates a process of self-integration that marks a shift toward awareness and autonomy. This study affirms the relevance of Karen Horney’s theory in understanding women’s experiences in contemporary manipulative relationships and expands its application to autobiographical memoirs by illustrating the character’s psychological dynamics from identity fragmentation toward self-integration.

Abstract

Learning evaluation requires high-quality test items to ensure that students’ assessment results can be measured accurately. However, test items with low discrimination power are still frequently found, making them less effective in distinguishing students’ abilities appropriately. This study aims to analyze the quality of test items based on discrimination power in Indonesian language learning evaluation through a literature review. Discrimination power is an important indicator in determining the ability of test items to differentiate between high-achieving and low-achieving students, thereby enabling a more accurate evaluation of learning quality. The research method employed was a literature review using scientific articles obtained from Google Scholar as data sources. The analyzed articles were selected based on inclusion criteria, namely studies discussing the discrimination power of test items in Indonesian language learning and published between 2022 and 2024. The search results yielded five articles relevant to the focus of the study. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing based on findings from previous studies. The results of the review indicate that the quality of discrimination power of test items in Indonesian language learning remains varied. Several studies showed that most test items had good discrimination power, while other studies still identified items categorized as poor and very poor, indicating the need for improvement. This review demonstrates that discrimination power analysis should be conducted in the development of evaluation instruments to improve the quality of test items and to produce more accurate learning evaluation outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze interpersonal communication strategies employed by teachers and their contribution to student engagement and emotional regulation at Sekolah Dasar Katolik Karya Singaraja. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to explore how verbal, nonverbal, empathic, affirmative, corrective, and persuasive communication are implemented in classroom interactions. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication plays a significant role in fostering meaningful learning interactions and supporting students’ cognitive, social, and emotional development. Verbal and persuasive communication function as scaffolding that facilitates understanding and active participation, while nonverbal communication strengthens message delivery and classroom interaction dynamics. Empathic and affirmative communication contribute to creating a psychologically safe learning environment that enhances students’ confidence and intrinsic motivation. Meanwhile, corrective communication serves as constructive feedback that guides students in improving their learning performance. These findings align with Vygotsky’s social constructivism theory, Rogers’ humanistic theory, and Hattie and Timperley’s feedback theory, which emphasize the importance of social interaction, emotional support, and effective feedback in the learning process. Overall, interpersonal communication strategies implemented by teachers are not merely instructional tools but also pedagogical approaches that foster holistic student development.

Abstract

This study examines the construction the meaning of the word Pulang in the poetry anthology Masih Ingatkah Kau Jalan Pulang by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Rintik Sedu trought the Triadik (Representamen, Object and Interpretant) Semiotics of Charles Sander Peirce. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and semiotic analysis, the study focuses on ten poems is Waktu, Kau, Demikianlah, Masih, Tapi, Sudah, Ketika, Masih (2), Antara and Jalan. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques and were subsequently analyzed using Peirce’s Triadic model. The findings reveal that the word Pulang does not convey a single, fixed meaning but rather generates multiple layers of interpretation. These meanings include a literal sense of returning home, an emotional sense associated with returning to affective relationships, an existential sense related to the search for direction and self-awareness, and a metaphysical sense referring to a return to the origin of life. The study demonstrates that pulang functions as an open symbol that produces complex poetic meanings through an ongoing process of semiosis. Furthermore, the findings confirm the effectiveness of Peircean semiotics in uncovering symbolic meanings in contemporary poetry. This study contributes to literary linguistics by expanding discussions on the symbolic function of words in poetry and by showing how a single lexical item can develop into a multidimensional sign within literary discourse.

Abstract

This research was motivated by students’ limited understanding of the intrinsic elements of drama, including theme, plot, character, setting, and moral value, as well as drama structure, namely prologue, dialogue, and epilogue. Students also experienced difficulty adapting short stories into drama scripts. This study aimed to describe the improvement of students’ ability to write drama scripts adapted from short stories through the discovery learning model. This research used Classroom Action Research based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in three stages: pre-action, cycle I, and cycle II. The subjects were 21 students of class XI A at SMA Negeri 1 Toari. Data were collected through observation, drama script writing tests, and documentation. The results showed improvement in each cycle. In cycle I, the average score reached 70.48, classical completeness was 33.3%, and student activity was 52.91%. In cycle II, the average score increased to 80.43, classical completeness reached 80.95%, and student activity increased to 83.86%. The cumulative increase in the average score reached 39.51%. These findings prove that discovery learning effectively improves students’ ability to write drama scripts adapted from short stories.
