Abstract

The Inquiry Learning model is a student-centered approach that involves exploration, questioning, and direct discovery of concepts. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the Inquiry Learning model, supported by virtual comics, in improving students’ ability to write folktales. Virtual comics are used as an interactive visual medium to help students understand the elements of folktales, such as plot, characters, setting, and moral message. This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design and involved 20 students in the 10th grade at SMK Abu Darrin, Bojonegoro. Data were collected through a folktale writing test and analyzed using N-Gain calculations and a Paired Sample t-test. The results indicate a significant improvement in writing ability, evidenced by an increase in the average score from 49.6 on the pretest to 67.5 on the posttest. The N-Gain value of 0.34 falls into the moderate category. The t-test yielded a calculated t-value of 9.73, which is greater than the critical t-value of 2.093, thus rejecting H₀. The Inquiry Learning model supported by virtual comics has not only proven effective in improving students’ narrative writing skills but also contributes to modernizing the teaching of classical literature through the integration of interactive digital media, as well as reconstructing the archaic values of narratives into a more creative and systematic written form. Abstract

This study examines language acquisition in five-year-old twins with different neurodevelopmental conditions, namely Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study aims to describe and compare the language acquisition of the two research subjects in terms of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. This study employs a qualitative approach using the case study method. The research subjects are two twin boys, one of whom has ADD and the other has ASD. Data were collected through participant observation and interviews using transcription and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted using a qualitative approach and presented descriptively. The results indicate that the child with ADD exhibits more developed linguistic competence compared to the child with ASD. The child with ADD is capable of acquiring language at the phonological, syntactic, and semantic levels, although inconsistencies in sound production and sentence structure are still observed. Conversely, the child with ASD has not yet demonstrated language acquisition at the word and meaning levels and remains at the babbling stage. The significant differences in language acquisition between the two study groups, despite growing up in relatively similar linguistic environments and receiving comparable linguistic stimuli, indicate that language acquisition is strongly influenced by children’s cognitive readiness and neurological conditions. This study contributes empirically by demonstrating that certain neurodivergent conditions affect children’s language acquisition progress even when they receive identical linguistic treatment.

Abstract

Historical comparative linguistics is used as a tool to determine the relationship between languages in an effort to understand the origins or history of language formation in a particular region, as well as its development. The objective of this study is to identify the linguistic relationship between the Turi Sleman Javanese language, the Bogor Sundanese language, and the Bangkalan Madurese language using linguistic correspondence analysis, lexicostatistics to determine the kinship system, and glottochronology to determine the time of divergence. This study employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, with data sources drawn from three speakers of the Turi Javanese, Bogor Sundanese, and Bangkalan Madurese languages. Data collection techniques include interviews, note-taking, and literature review. Data analysis techniques include sound correspondence, lexicostatistics, and glottochronology. The analysis results are presented in a descriptive format with data tables. The findings indicate that these three languages still belong to the same language family, with a linguistic kinship percentage of 30.5% between Javanese and Sundanese, 33% between Javanese and Madurese, and 31.5% between Sundanese and Madurese, with Javanese and Madurese showing a closer linguistic kinship. Additionally, the estimated divergence times for the three languages range from 2,471–3,165 years ago for Javanese and Sundanese, 2,404–2,852 years ago for Javanese and Madurese, and 2,503–2,961 years ago for Sundanese and Madurese, with the longest divergence period occurring between Turi Javanese and Bogor Sundanese. Thus, this study contributes to the body of knowledge on the phonological systems of Indonesian regional languages and demonstrates that immigration, geographical differences, and contact with other languages can consistently alter proto-languages. Abstract

The Impoliteness in movies serves as a narrative device to develop characters, create conflict, and reflect real-life social interactions. Applying Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies, this research analyses the strategies, functions, and implications of impoliteness in I Care a Lot movie. The data were taken from the film scripts. The results show that five strategies of impoliteness are found in this movie. They include bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. Positive impoliteness is the most dominant strategy found in the movie (41.2%). This strategy targets someone's approving face, showing disrespect for something in the interaction. Due to the functions, the most frequent function of impoliteness is coercive impoliteness (58,82%). This indicates that the impolite utterances found in the movie are used to pressure, control, or coerce the interlocutor. The findings suggest that impoliteness in movies is essential in establishing power dynamics and character development. This research contributes to socio-pragmatics by providing insights into how strategies of impoliteness can be applied in communication, including film, to create conflict and tension.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of wisdom and supernatural power in the character of Datu Langko as a model of ideal leadership in the Datu Langko folktale, which originates from the oral tradition of the Sasak people in West Nusa Tenggara. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using narrative analysis to examine the construction of the character within the text and the meaning of the leadership values represented. The data, consisting of the folklore text, was analyzed through the stages of reduction, categorization, interpretation, and drawing conclusions, referencing cultural leadership theory and oral literature studies. The research findings indicate that Datu Langko’s wisdom is reflected in self-awareness, responsibility, respect for others’ opinions, the ability to set priorities, the ability to make sound decisions, and a strong sense of religiosity. Meanwhile, the aspect of supernatural power is manifested through the ability to interact with supernatural beings, utilizing supernatural forces for collective benefit, and the use of incantations within ritual contexts. These findings indicate that in Sasak culture, ideal leadership is understood as a fusion of intellectual, moral, and spiritual capacities. The novelty of this study lies in revealing the integration of wisdom and supernatural power as a unified construct of cultural leadership within Sasak folklore, which has previously tended to be studied descriptively and in isolation. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of oral literature studies and the representation of leadership from a cultural perspective, as well as enriches the use of folklore as a source of values education in the fields of education, language, and literature. Abstract

Teaching Balinese script reading at the elementary school level faces a serious challenge in the form of students’ low phonological awareness, which is caused by the complexity of phoneme representation in the Balinese script, which differs significantly from the Latin alphabet. This challenge hinders students’ ability to accurately identify the initial sounds of words. This study aims to compare the First Sound Fluency (FSF) scores of third-grade students at the beginning and midpoint of the semester to measure the development of phonological awareness in the context of Balinese script learning. The study employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive-comparative design through a simple longitudinal measurement of 24 elementary school students selected through purposive sampling. The FSF test instrument was adapted to include 24 Balinese-script words familiar to the students and analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, score range) without inferential testing. The results showed an increase in the average FSF score from 33.125 to 35.333, with the minimum score rising from 26 to 31, and the maximum score from 42 to 45. These findings confirm the effectiveness of FSF as an assessment tool for early literacy development based on regional scripts.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines diachronic semantic change in selected Hebrew theological terms in the Book of Hosea which are written in English and Indonesian Bible translations across different time periods. Though existing literature often examines semantic change within single linguistic traditions, comparative research across different cultural and linguistic contexts remains relatively underexplored. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to investigate how theological meaning evolves when transposed into these distinct cultural and temporal contexts. Employing a qualitative descriptive design grounded in diachronic semantics and translation studies, the research analyzes five key lexemes of zĕnûnêyhā, ḥesed, ’āšûbā, bĕrît, and ruḥāmā that frequently appear in the Hebrew Masoretic Text and their renderings in the King James Version, New King James Version, Terjemahan Lama, and Terjemahan Baru Edisi 2. The results indicate that the English translation tradition exhibits relative semantic stability, while the Indonesian translations demonstrate systematic patterns as identified in 32 lexical examples, yielding 128 comparative data points. The findings suggest that the English translation tradition reveals relative lexical stability. In contrast, the Indonesian translations exhibit systematic patterns of semantic change, including narrowing, subjectivization, and amelioration. These patterns indicate that semantic change in biblical translation operates not only as a linguistic process but also serves as a form of theological and cultural adaptation. The results point to a diachronic shift in Indonesian translations from formal lexical representation toward the explicit encoding of internal theological states. Ultimately, this study contributes to the fields of diachronic semantics and translation studies by showing how cross-linguistic translation mediates theological meaning across historical and cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study identifies the representation of female identity in the film Naga (2023) by Meshal Al-Jasser using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which focuses on denotative, connotative, and myth meanings. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with observation-note data collection techniques. Data were obtained through observations of dialogues and visual symbols that represent female identity conflicts in the film Naga. The research results on 12 findings show that visual symbols such as the view through the carpet hole function as connotative signs of the limitation of the main character's mobility. This symbol represents the myth of patriarchal father roles as authority holders who become obstacles to women's individual freedom in the narrative of the film Naga. The film Naga voices satirical criticism concerning women related to fair and humane social rights. This study concludes that the film Naga becomes a medium of social representation that depicts women's struggle in balancing between tradition and modernity.
