Previous research showed that the functions that appeared most often were attracting students' attention, social functions and the last is organize learning and teaching activities effectively. Based on these findings, the author is interested in conducting further research from a different perspective. The researchers are interested in conducting further research from students’ perspective. The researchers would like to analyse and prove that code-switching carried out by lecturers is indeed needed by students and is effective in the teaching and learning activities. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data are considered as descriptive qualitative because they are form of written and spoken (words) rather than numbers. The research design used in this research is survey research design, meanwhile the researchers collected the data (sample) during English class that conducted by the researchers. The findings of this study, several practical recommendations can be proposed to enhance the effectiveness of code switching in teaching contexts in higher education. Conduct regular training sessions for lecturers to enhance their understanding of teaching strategies that integrate code switching. Lecturers need a deep understanding of how to implement code switching effectively and responsively to students' needs. Further research is also needed to delve into the long- term effects of code switching on academic achievement and students' language proficiency. Thus, this approach not only enriches students' learning experiences but also supports the inclusive and multicultural vision of modern higher education institutions.

This research uses the Kemmis and McTaggart method and consists of 2 cycles. Planning, implementation, observation, and reflection are components in each cycle. This classroom action research was conducted two meetings in each cycle. The instruments used consisted of pre-test and post-test, questionnaires and observation sheets. The results of this study were analysed using simple statistical methods with the following outcomes: the pre-test score was 62 and the post-test score was 68 in the first cycle, while the pre-test score in the second cycle was 64 and the post-test score was 78. The students' confidence level also increased by 75% during the second cycle. This indicates an improvement in speaking skills, an increase in students' confidence, and a positive response to the material. After the method was used, the speaking learning outcomes in the Interpersonal Speaking course improved. Recommendations for this research include strengthening the implementation of PBL through relevant project designs, approaches to boost confidence, utilization of technology, evaluations based on student feedback, professional development for lecturers, and integration into the curriculum. By implementing these recommendations, it is expected that students' learning outcomes and their confidence in interpersonal speaking will improve, and their responses to the learning process will become increasingly positive.

Abstract

Advertising plays a vital role in brand communication by employing various semiotic elements to convey messages effectively. However, the use of Charles S. Peirce's semiotic framework in analyzing rebranding strategies remains underexplored. This study examines the application of semiotic elements index, icon, and symbol in Burger King’s official rebrand introduction video to highlight its message of modernization and innovation. Using qualitative methods, the research identifies 10 distinct signs within the video: 3 icons, 1 index, and 6 symbols. The visual transformation of the brand identity, serving as an index, signifies Burger King's commitment to innovation and customer focus. Icons, such as mouthwatering depictions of burgers and fries, represent the brand’s core products, while symbols, including the new logo and textual elements, convey cultural meanings tied to the brand’s identity. Findings reveal that these signs effectively combine to project Burger King as a modern, innovative, and customer-oriented brand, addressing competitive market demands. This semiotic analysis underscores the importance of blending visual and symbolic elements in branding to shape consumer perceptions and reinforce brand identity. Future research should explore similar strategies in other industries to expand understanding of semiotic applications in advertising.

Abstract

Music has the power to convey meaningful messages, including motivational messages. Using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, this research examines the motivational messages in the lyrics of the song I’m Fine by BTS. The primary focus of this research is on how meaning is produced through the signifier and signified relationship. This research employs an interpretive qualitative approach to delve deep into the social phenomenon. The semiotic approach allows the researchers to explain how signs in song lyrics function in bringing motivational messages. Data were gathered from the lyrics of the song I’m Fine and analysed thoroughly by dissecting the relationship between signifier and signified. This research discovered the hidden messages the songwriter wanted to convey to the listeners. The results show that this song conveys the value of having courage when facing challenges, mental toughness when facing difficulties, and the ability to bounce back from them. This encourages listeners to be optimistic, not to give up, and instead keep trying despite the obstacles. This research proves that song lyrics in the song I’m Fine by BTS were not merely a musical work but also a medium for conveying powerful inspirational messages: one can achieve inner peace and emotional resilience by pushing through life’s challenges with courage.

Abstract

Foreign language writing can be a challenging and emotionally complex experience for learners. In fact, the literature has shown that learners’ emotions significantly influence foreign language acquisitionDespite the acknowledged influence of emotions in language learning, research specifically examining the interplay between proficiency, enjoyment, and boredom in EFL writing contexts, particularly among Indonesian university students, remains scarce. This correlational study investigated the interrelations between language proficiency, foreign language writing enjoyment (FLWE), and foreign language writing boredom (FLWB) among university students in Indonesia. The Oxford Quick Placement Test (QPT) was utilized to assess the participants’ proficiency level, while FLWE and FLWB scales were used to measure emotional dimensions. The findings revealed moderate positive correlations between proficiency and FLWE (r = .48, p < .01) and moderate negative correlations between proficiency and FLWB (r = -.58, p < .001). Additionally, a significant inverse relationship between FLWE and FLWB (r = -.53, p = .001) was identified. These findings suggest that higher proficiency fosters greater enjoyment and reduces boredom in writing activities. Implications for educators include scaffolding tasks to match proficiency levels and fostering positive learning environments to enhance engagement.

This study aims to find out whether there is a correlation between introvert personality and reading comprehension at the sixth semester students of English Language Education of FKIP UIR. The method of this quantitative study utilized a correlational design to explore the correlation. Data were collected from 22 introverted students using Eysenck's Personality Inventory questionnaire and TOEFL ITP section 3 reading comprehension test trough google form. The analysis employed Pearson’s correlation to measure the correlation between these variables. The result of this study show there is no significant correlation between introverted personality and reading comprehension, with a rxy value of 0.044 < rt value of 0.444 and a tcounted value of 0.197 < ttable value of 1.72. Teachers can improve learning by recognizing whether students are more introverted or extroverted, which allows for teaching strategies tailored to individual learning styles.
