Abstract

This study entitled “Symbolism of Nine Great Houses in Game of Thrones”. It aims at identifying symbols that are applied and analyzing the meanings of the symbols implied in each house based on the semiosis process proposed by Peirce. All the data are taken from the Nine Great Houses by watching it repeatedly and listing all the symbols that are related to each house. The writer will identify the symbols that are found and analyses them by using qualitative descriptive methods continued with the semiosis process. The writer chose the Theory of Symbol proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce to analyze the symbols by using his triadic structure which included Object, Representamen, and Interpretant. All three parts must be present for something to be considered a sign or symbol. The results show that four type of Archetypal Symbols found, they are Symbolism of Animals, Symbolism of Colors, Symbolism of Settings, and Symbolism of Objects. These differences have resulted in various interpretations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the types of grammatical cohesion used and to analyze how grammatical cohesion is applied "Towards Harmony among Civilizations" published on September 29, 2009 about the new era of world order at Harvard University. This study discusses discourse analysis, especially cohesion analysis. Hassan and Halliday (1976) theories related to literature, discourse, cohesion, and speech were used to obtain the objectives of this study. This research is qualitative research using the observation method. In this study the data obtained by using data collection techniques in the form of documentation. Data collection procedures include searching, selecting, reading, and identifying data. In analyzing, data is collected by reading and grouping them into paragraphs. Cohesion analysis was carried out to determine the type of cohesion contained in the speech text. Arguments are also given to support the comparison between theory and analysis. The researcher found that the types of grammatical cohesion used in speech consisted of references, ellipsis, and conjunctions. Found references (305), found ellipsis (1), and found conjunctions (244). From the results of this study, it can be concluded that in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech, he used the cohesion reference type.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and analyzed the meaning of the figurative language used in Ellie Goulding’s song lyrics. The data were analyzed based on the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963). Used to identify the types of figurative language and theory proposed by Leech (1974). The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The result show there are 5 types of figurative language used in the song lyrics of Ellie Goulding’s album “Brightest Blue”. They are; simile, metaphor, Personification, Synecdoche and Hyperbole. There were found 19 sentences identified using those seven types of figurative language such as: 10 of simile (47,61%), 1 of metaphor (4,76%), 1 metaphor (4,76%), 1 personification (4,76%), 3 of Synecdoche (14,28%), 1 of Metonymy (4,76%), 4 of Hyperbole (19,047%) 1 of Allusion (4,76). The result show there are two types of meaning used in the song lyrics of Ellie Goulding’s album “Brightest Blue”, such are; connotative meaning, conceptual meaning and affective meaning It can be in dictated that the dominant type of figurative language in the song lyrics is hyperbole. The meaning of figurative language is also stated clearly.

Abstract

The study is concerned with the phenomenon of mixing two or more languages called code-mixing that are found in the Pretty Little Liars Indonesia Series. This study aims at finding out the types of code mixing and the reason of code mixing found from the conversations of the characters in Pretty Little Liars Indonesia Series. Observation method was used in collecting the data. The method used in analyzing the data was descriptive qualitative method by applying the theory by Hoffman (1991). This result of this research reveals that code mixing occurs when speakers mix two or more languages in one utterance. This study shows that all types of code-mixing are found, such as; intra-sentential code-mixing, intra-lexical code-mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation. Meanwhile, the top three for the reason of code-mixing that were found are talking about particular topic (84.21%). interjection (13.16%), and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor (2.63%). Some of the reasons were not found in the data, namely; quoting someone’s word, expressing feeling about something, repetition used for clarification, and expressing group identity, because in the dialogue the characters never have related to the reason of code-mixing.

Abstract

This study entitled Cooperative Principles Found in the film ‘Catch Me If You Can’ is aimed at describing the types of cooperative principles mostly used in the film. In analyzing the data, a qualitative method was applied using the cooperative principles theory proposed by Grice (1978) and the context of the situation by Halliday (1979) as supporting theories. The result of the study, film ‘Catch me if you can’ use a cooperative principle to the fullest, it surpass the potential observing the situation can give proper reason why the maxim flouted or applied by certain character in the film.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of category shift defined by Catford theory (1965) and Nida’s for translation equivalence (1964). The descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. This study used a secondary source from four videos. First, Badung Heaven of Dream, second, Pantai Melasti were posted in Jegeg Bagus Badung YouTube Channel. Third, Pungin puspa, and fourth, A Story of Sacred Bond from West Bali were posted on Jegeg Bagus Bali YouTube Channel. This study analyzed words, phrases, clauses, terms, and sentences. Total data were 33 data, which analyzed qualitatively.  The analysis showed that there were four types of category shift. They were Structure shift (17), Class shift (1), Unit shift (10), and Intra-system shift (5). This study also found two types of translation equivalence. Namely Formal equivalence (21) and dynamic equivalence (12). The most dominant types of category shift that found is structure shift and the most dominant equivalence that found is formal equivalence.

Abstract

The use of taboo language could be found easily in our daily life, especially in our daily communication because it is considered more effective to use to express feelings and any situations. This research deals with the taboo words found in ‘Habits’ song lyric by Eminem. Theory of taboo words Wardhaugh (2006) is used to analyse the data found. This research aims to analyse the functions of taboo words in ‘Habits’ song lyrics by Eminem. The data of this research were taken from a rap song entitled ‘Habits’ by an American famous rapper, Eminem. As a result of this study, there are 4 functions of taboo words found in ‘Habits’ song lyric. The most functions used in the song lyrics is to draw attention and to show contempt with the percentages 35,7%.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) investigate which word classes undergo derivational morphological processes in the Lamaholot language, Tanah Boleng dialect, Bayunta'a Village, and (2) describe the derivational morphological processes in the Lamaholot language, Tanah Boleng dialect, Bayunta'a Village. The method used is a morphological study. The research subjects are reliable informants. The research object is derivation in the Lamaholot language, Tanah Boleng dialect, Bayunta'a Village. The qualitative data analysis process is supported by qualitative descriptions using structured interviews. The results of this study revealled the following data obtained by the researcher. There are three types of affixes in the Lamaholot language: prefixes, suffixes, and infixes. There are three types of prefixes: (be-), (ke-), and (pe-). There is one type of suffix: (n-). There is one type of infix: (en-). There is also a change in the initial phoneme which is only found in verb derivation, namely the change from the basic word class of verb to noun (deverbal noun), which is (/D/>/K/), (/G/>/K/), (/H/>/N/), and (/T/>/N/).

Abstract

Polysemy is a linguistic term that describes when a word or phrase has multiple related meanings. Polysemy is part of the field of semantics, which studies the relationship between meanings in language. This research examined the presence of polysemy in the movie adaptation Little Women (2019) that directed by Greta Gerwig. The research method is descriptive qualitative, with analytical techniques applied to the source material, specifically the movie script. The theoretical framework for analyzing polysemy was based on Apresjan’s concept, which provides a comprehensive understanding of polysemy. The findings of this analysis include 12 data points, each consisting of two dialogues that present similar words but different meanings. The analysis concluded with the assertion that the Little Women (2019) movie exemplifies a multitude of polysemic uses related to semantics.

Abstract

Ethnography of communication is always an interesting topic to be discussed, because when people talk to others, they may convey specific intentions to the hearers. The aims of this research were to identify the ethnography of communication factors and the functions of utterances in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie script. This study employed the theory entitled SPEAKING model by Hymes and the qualitative research method was applied in this study. Based on the analysis result, the characters’ utterances have various functions such as claim, birthday wish, request, order, threat, swear, apology, welcome, suggestion, prohibition, assertion, explanation, awarding points, announcing score, as well as declaring the match winner.
