Abstract

This research aimed to explore the lexical and contextual meanings in Olivia Rodrigo’s song lyrics from her album Sour. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analyzed how Olivia Rodrigo’s word choice and context convey deep emotions and messages through literal and contextual meanings. The results of this study revealed how simple yet emotionally charged language is used to describe complex feelings and experiences. Songs such as Brutal, Jealousy, Jealousy, Traitor, and Hope Ur Ok feature themes of love, self-doubt, jealousy, social criticism, and personal growth. Song lyrics are seen as a language-based art form that not only relies on the beauty of words but is also loaded with emotional and social meaning. By analyzing word choice and context, this research also highlighted the way Olivia Rodrigo makes music a valuable tool for language learning and cultural analysis, enriching the understanding of emotional and linguistic expression in music. The research concluded that the lyrics in Sour analyzed through Literal and Contextual depict the narrative of modern life by using simple but powerful language, creating a deep emotional resonance with the listener.

Abstract

This study aimed to explain the changes in setting that occur in the ecranisation process of ‘Always and Forever’, Lara Jean novel into ‘To All the Boys: Always and Forever movie’. Moreover, this study was conducted by using a qualitative method. Document analysis and note-taking techniques were used in collecting data and then applied the ecranisation theory proposed by Eneste (1991) to analyze the data. The study results showed that the setting has undergone 37 reductions, eight additions, and seven variations. The changes that occurred during the adaptation are most likely because of the technical and time limitations of the movie production, the insignificance of the particular parts of the novel, and the importance of the particular part to be displayed in the movie.

Abstract

Hate speech appears as a form of players' emotional response to the tense and competitive game situation. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of speech acts used in hate speech and analyze the form of hate speech in the Mobile Legends chat and comments. The method used was descriptive qualitative with a pragmatics approach regarding Searle illocutionary theory and used documentation techniques on conversation in chat games and player comments. The results showed that expressive speech acts are the most dominant 65form (53,33%), followed by directive (33.33%), assertive (6.67%), and commissive (6.67%). The forms of hate speech are carried out through calling someone or a group of people with animals, parts of the human body, blasphemy, and also Psychological Abuse. This speech not only reflects emotions, but is also used as a tool to verbally and psychologically attack opponents. The findings prove that in-game hate speech is a meaningful social action that can influence interactions between players. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding pragmatics in unpacking the meaning of hate speech as well as the urgency of creating a healthy play environment free from verbal violence.

Abstract

This study examines the flouting of Grice’s cooperative maxims, specifically Quantity, Relevance, Quality, and Manner in the 2024 presidential debates of Indonesia and the United States. The objective is to identify the types of maxim flouting committed by candidates and to compare pragmatic communication strategies across these two distinct political cultures. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using transcripts from YouTube videos of the presidential debates in Indonesia and the U.S. Data collection involved observation, transcription, and documentation, while data analysis focused on classifying and presenting instances of maxim flouting. The analysis centers on how candidates strategically flout these maxims to achieve rhetorical goals within formal debate settings. The findings revealed a total of 20 instances of maxim flouting, with the Maxim of Quantity and the Relevance being the most frequently flouted. This flouting serves to control the narrative, divert difficult questions, and strengthen the political image. Donald Trump flouted the most maxims (7 instances), followed by Prabowo Subianto (5), Kamala Harris and Ganjar Pranowo (4 each), while Anies Baswedan did not flout any maxims. The communication style of U.S. candidates tends to be more expansive and confrontational, whereas Indonesian candidates tend to be more structured and concise.

Abstract

This study explores EFL students' perceptions of linking words in writing at Bali International Language Center (BILCEN). Linking words, essential tools for achieving coherence and cohesion in writing, are often a challenge for EFL learners. This research aims to gain a deeper understanding of how students perceive the importance of linking words and how their use influences their writing skills. A qualitative approach was employed, with 15 EFL students enrolled in the English course at BILCEN as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and writing samples, which allowed for an exploration of students' personal experiences, thoughts, and challenges when using linking words in their written work. The analysis of interview responses and writing samples revealed that students recognized the significance of linking words in making their writing clearer and more organized. However, many students expressed challenges in using them correctly, often due to limited exposure or understanding of their varied functions. The findings suggest that while linking words are essential for enhancing writing coherence, students may benefit from more focused instruction and practice in using these words effectively. This research highlights the need for EFL programs to prioritize teaching linking words as part of developing students' writing proficiency.

Abstract

In the digital era, teenagers now communicate more often through online platforms. One of the current growing phenomena is the use of emojis. Emojis act as nonverbal elements that can influence various aspects of the communication process. Emojis can affect the intonation and clarity of meaning of the message to be conveyed, without elements of sound or facial expressions, written messages are often ambiguous or even misperceived. Emojis are effective in reducing communication confusion by providing additional visual cues about the sender's intentions and emotions. This study aims to understand the phenomenon of emojis used in online conversations in depth and their impact on differences in perception among teenagers. This study utilized a qualitative research design with a case study approach among teenagers. The study's results showed a significant influence on differences in perception and perspective in the use of emojis among teenagers. So, it is important to understand the context and meaning of emojis to reduce the risk of misunderstandings and differences in perception in online communication in this digital era. Through a better understanding of the use of emojis, it is hoped that a more effective and harmonious communication environment can be created.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the structure of meaning and the embedded cultural values in nature-themed feature texts composed by students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education program. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study adopts a semiotic text analysis design. Data were collected through documentation of the feature texts and semi-structured interviews. The analysis was guided by five semiotic codes: hermeneutic, semic, symbolic, proairetic, and cultural. The findings revealed that the students’ feature texts consistently incorporate all five semiotic codes, each contributing to the enrichment of narrative structure and depth of textual meaning. The hermeneutic code generates curiosity and suspense; the semic code conveys connotative meanings; the symbolic code represents cultural and spiritual symbolism; the proairetic code structures the narrative flow; and the cultural code reflects local cultural values. Moreover, the texts exhibit significant values such as aesthetic awareness, ecological consciousness, cultural preservation, and spiritual reflection. This study concluded that students’ feature texts function as a medium of personal and cultural expression, while simultaneously serving as a tool for critical literacy. These texts support transformative learning and foster cultural identity reinforcement within educational contexts.

Abstract

Grief is recognized as a universal psychological phenomenon, with its manifestation influenced by individual differences and contextual variables such as personality traits, cultural background, and the relational proximity to the deceased (Worden, 2009; Stroebe et al., 2007). The present study investigated the expressions of grief as portrayed by Otto, the protagonist in the film A Man Called Otto (2022). Following the death of his spouse, Sonya, Otto displays a series of emotional and behavioral alterations, including social withdrawal and changes in affective expression. The film serves as a narrative medium through which complex psychological processes, such as bereavement and emotional regulation, are represented. This study employed the Modes of Expression framework proposed by Corless et al. (2009), which classifies grief-related responses into four categories: verbal, non-verbal, physical, and behavioral expressions. A qualitative descriptive method was utilized, with primary data extracted from the film’s narrative and screenplay, and triangulated with secondary sources comprising peer-reviewed articles, psychological texts, and grief-related theoretical literature. Scenes relevant to the portrayal of grief were systematically identified and thematically analyzed in alignment with the established framework. Findings indicated that Otto’s grief is conveyed through a combination of spoken language, silence, facial expressions, and purposeful actions, most notably, repeated visits to his late wife's grave. These behaviors underscore the multifaceted and often non-verbal nature of grief expression. Moreover, Otto’s trajectory from emotional isolation to renewed interpersonal engagement reflects the dynamic and transformative characteristics of the mourning process (Neimeyer, 2001). This study contributed to the growing body of literature on cinematic representations of psychological states, offering insights into how grief may be externalized through narrative structures and character development in visual media.

Abstract

Environmental issues caused by plastic waste have become both an ecological and humanitarian crisis. In response to this reality, this study aimed to explore how the song Plastic Tree by Endah N Rhesa serves as an agent of ecological critique through poetic symbolism. Using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic approach, the song lyrics were analysed as signs conveying hidden environmental meanings. Symbols such as “plastic tree,” “rubber bee,” and “paper bird” reflect the loss of natural ecosystems replaced by lifeless artificial objects. The analysis revealed that the song successfully builds ecological awareness and rejects superficial solutions, thereby encouraging listeners to become more reflective and concerned about their surrounding environment.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach on the speaking ability of first-grade students. A quantitative method was employed, specifically a quasi-experimental design. There were two classes selected: one as the experimental group (X) and the other as the control group (Y). The participants were the first-grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in the 2024/2025 academic year. Class A and Class B were chosen as the samples using purposive sampling. A questionnaire was administered to assess the perceptions of the experimental group regarding the implementation of the CLT approach. In addition, tests were conducted to measure students’ progress in speaking ability, and classroom observations were carried out to monitor student engagement during the application of the CLT approach. Based on the comparison between pre-test and post-test results, students’ post-test scores were higher than their pre-test scores. The results of the hypothesis testing showed that the calculated t-value is 12.503, which exceeded the critical t-value of 1.701 (tₐ ≥ tₜ). Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. These findings indicated that the implementation of the CLT approach was effective in improving the speaking ability of first-grade students.
