Abstract

Food handlers are individuals who directly interact with food and its utensils, from preparation to serving. Observations at Gandoriah Beach, Pariaman, revealed unhygienic behaviors among food handlers, such as not wearing aprons, not washing hands with soap, and having long, dirty nails. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the behavior of street food handlers at Gandoriah Beach in 2022. An analytic survey method with a cross-sectional design was used. A sample of 45 food handlers was selected from a population of 68. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). The results showed that 66.7% of respondents had a high level of knowledge, 62.2% had a positive attitude, 56.6% worked in areas with poor sanitation facilities, and 53.3% demonstrated good behavior. There was a significant relationship between attitude and behavior (p=0.005), and between sanitation facilities and behavior (p=0.042), but no significant relationship between knowledge and behavior (p=0.113). It is recommended that food handlers improve sanitation facilities and consistently apply food hygiene and sanitation principles.

Abstract

In the working area of the Andalas Health Center, ARI (Acute Respiratory Infection) ranked first among the ten most common diseases. As of December 2022, 80.43% of houses in this area did not meet health standards. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the incidence of ARI in toddlers in the Andalas Health Center area in 2023. This was an analytical survey using a cross-sectional approach, conducted from March to June 2023. Data were collected through interviews and home environment assessments. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods with the Chi-square test. Results showed that 62.8% of toddlers experienced ARI. Among the assessed homes, 60% had inadequate ventilation, 60% had poor natural lighting, 57.1% had improper room temperature, 68.6% had unsuitable humidity levels, and 54.3% had high occupancy density. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between natural lighting (p=0.0001; PR=6.667), room temperature (p=0.0001; PR=4.750), and humidity (p=0.0001; PR=9.625) with ARI incidence. However, no significant relationship was found with ventilation (p=0.353) and occupancy density (p=0.073). It is recommended that sanitarians at the Andalas Health Center increase healthy home education and implement preventive measures, including physical home improvements. Cross-sector collaboration is encouraged to support home renovation programs for low-income families, to create a healthy home environment.

Abstract

Waste management remains a pressing challenge in Maron Wetan Village, Probolinggo Regency, East Java. The situation is exacerbated by the community’s low awareness of waste separation, limited supporting infrastructure, and the influx of waste from outside the area. To address these issues, the Community Service Program (KKN) Group 52 of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya applied the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, which emphasizes collaboration and active engagement of local residents as key actors rather than passive research subjects. The program commenced with the mapping of 13 neighborhood units (RT) and field data collection, followed by analysis using the Matrix Ranking technique to determine priority interventions based on urgency, efficiency, and impact. The analysis identified three main priorities: low awareness of the long-term environmental impacts of waste (score 9), habitual disposal of waste into rivers (score 8), and inadequate waste management facilities (score 6). In response, two primary interventions were developed: (1) the establishment of a waste bank as an economic incentive scheme, and (2) the installation of educational signboards titled “How Long Does Your Waste Take to Decompose?” to promote environmental consciousness. Positive community responses were particularly evident in RT 2, RT 6, and RT 9, where active participation was observed. These findings highlight that an educational–participatory approach can enhance environmental awareness and encourage behavioral change, although the long-term sustainability of the program remains contingent upon structural support from the village government.

Abstract

The issue of solid medical waste management in hospitals remains a serious challenge that can endanger environmental health and increase the risk of disease transmission. In several healthcare facilities, including Zahirah General Hospital, improper medical waste segregation practices are still found, such as the mixing of medical and non-medical waste. This condition indicates a weakness in healthcare workers' behavior towards safe and proper waste management. This study aims to examine the relationship between knowledge, years of service, and attitudes toward solid medical waste segregation behavior among nurses at Zahirah General Hospital. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design conducted from October to December 2024. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to nurses at Zahirah General Hospital, then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test. The results showed no significant relationship between knowledge and segregation behavior (p = 0.412), nor between years of service and behavior (p = 0.200). However, there was a significant relationship between attitude and behavior (p = 0.030; OR = 2.681). These findings indicate that nurses' attitudes play a key role in the effectiveness of medical waste segregation. This study highlights the importance of ongoing education and training programs on medical waste management for all hospital staff to increase awareness, responsibility, and engagement in proper waste segregation practices. These efforts are essential to support a safe and healthy hospital environment.

Abstract

Low Back Pain (LBP) is an occupational health problem commonly experienced by informal sector workers, especially those engaged in heavy lifting and carrying activities with non-ergonomic techniques. Workers at the Bulog Sago Warehouse in Pesisir Selatan Regency are at high risk of experiencing LBP due to manual handling practices without ergonomic training. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between individual characteristics (length of employment), lifting load, lifting technique, and lifting frequency with LBP complaints among rice transport workers. The study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, conducted from January to June 2025 involving all 48 workers (total sampling). Data were collected through questionnaires and observation sheets, then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that 66.7% of workers experienced LBP complaints. There were significant relationships between length of employment (p=0.001), lifting load (p=0.047), lifting technique (p=0.003), and lifting frequency (p=0.027) with the incidence of LBP. It was concluded that individual and ergonomic factors significantly influence LBP complaints. Ergonomic training, workload limitation, job rotation, and the use of lifting aids are recommended to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
