<![CDATA[This research was conducted with the aim of analyzing the power of love that made Maggie continue to love Bryce until the end of her life. Even though, Bryce had passed away and chose to live alone without seeking new love. This study used qualitative research methods. The source of the data is The Wish. The supporting data are taken from a book Triangular Theory of love. The researcher sorts out data related to the power of love in the main character's relationship. Then the data are analyzed based on Robert Sternberg's theory. The results of this study show that Maggie and Bryce's relationship is included in the consummate love type because it contains three love components of the triangular theory of love: intimacy, passion, and commitment/decision. The three components of love combined create the strength of a relationship that keeps Maggie going, including love itself, memories created, and the promises made.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aimed to describe (1) the form and function of Javanese particles in English conversations; and explained the factors behind the occurrence of language interference through the addition of Javanese particles to English conversations by students at the Fadhlul Fadhlan Islamic boarding school in Semarang. This research included field research with a qualitative approach and was presented descriptively. The data for this research was in the form of oral speech from the data source of students at the Fadhlul Fadhlan Islamic Boarding School when they were in the Islamic boarding school environment. The data collection technique method used non-participant observation by observing students' conversations and then taking notes and structured interviews with 27 students. The data analysis technique method used three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The interference theory by weinrich is to identify the interference phenomena. The results of this research showed that there were two types of Javanese particles added by students in English conversations, namely the single Javanese particles and the combination of Javanese particles. The second result was there were two forms of interference were found, namely grammatical interference and lexical interference. Third, the factors that caused interference through the addition of particles were internal factors in the form of bilingualism, lack of mastery of English grammar and vocabulary, and being carried away by mother tongue habits. <![CDATA[This research delves into the intricate narratives surrounding toxic masculinity through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of content on the Instagram account Thegentlemanrising. The study investigates how ideas of toxic masculinity are represented in both visual and textual elements, specifically in photos and expressions shared on the platform. Thegentlemanrising actively communicates messages aimed at encouraging the younger generation to embrace masculinity, emphasizing positive attributes while avoiding toxic traits. The content consists of motivational quotes fostering a healthy masculine identity, often accompanied by images of individuals embodying positive masculine characteristics. This study positions Thegentlemanrising as an initiative to balance and juxtapose the concept of masculinity, promoting positive ideals and steering clear of toxic behaviors. The findings contribute to our understanding of how social media platforms can play a role in shaping discussions around masculinity and influencing perceptions among the audience, particularly the younger generation.]]>

<![CDATA[Shanghai Baby (1999), a novel by Wei Hui, tells the story of a Shanghai woman named Coco who is caught between two superpowers, China and the West, personified by the characters Tian Tian, a native Chinese man with no passion for life, and Mark, a white German man who is dominant in every way. This study aims to identify the tension experienced by both Coco and the novel Shanghai Baby in such a liminal position through narrative content and reactions in the surrounding political economy and cultural discourse. Through a close reading of the text within the theoretical framework of Bhabha's (1994) concept of in-betweenness and third space, we argue that the liminality displayed within the text and based on the novel's highly Westernized narrative structure creates a liminal state for the novel. As such, while the narrative is set in China and was originally written in Chinese, the novel represents Western ideological imagination, underscored by its economic success in its translated form in English.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to identify and analyze the mood and modality as the parts of interpersonal metafunction in translation of the English quotes of motivation into Indonesian. The documentation method was applied to collect the source and target language quotes in the forms of clauses, simple or complex sentences. Close reading technique is applied while collecting the quotes to understand the context of the motivational expressions. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed. In order to identify the translation of English quotes of motivation into Indonesian, the parts of sentence structures in the source and target languages were compared. Contrastive linguistics is relevant for this study in order to identify the difference between both languages. The mood and modality as the interpersonal function of the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) developed by Halliday were applied in analyzing the quotes of motivation. The quotes of motivation in English show the indicative mood, and so do their translations. There are 27 quotes of motivations found. All the quotes belong to the indicative mood, but there is only one quote that has the combination between indicative mood and imperative mood. Indicative mood consists of two sub-categories, they are declarative and interrogative. There is one quote started by a declarative statement, and then followed by the interrogative form, and the rest are declarative sentences. From the modality macro-function, there are eleven quotes in the forms of modal verbs. The quotes of motivation as the modality type show probability since it is given for a specific situation, and it is not used regularly. As the modulation type, it shows the obligation. In terms of the modality values, the high value is used more often than the median value. Most of the translations show similar modality types and modality values, however, there are only two quotes that show different modality types but the same modality values. The change is from the modalization type of probability ‘should’ to the modulation type of obligation ‘must’. The modality type shift does impact the reader’s understanding.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims to describe the linguistics form, meaning, and functions under the phenomenon of English language variation used by Indonesian photography enthusiasts. The influence of the English register in lexical categories mostly has undergone a shift in meaning. So, the analysis of English register in the photography context is fascinating to be examined. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive with a sociolinguistics approach. The data are restricted to words and phrases taken from the daily posting of the Facebook community group. The procedure of data collection was conducted by observing and noting the English register among photography enthusiasts. The data were analyzed based on the formation process, the contextual meaning, and identifying the functions and sociolinguistics aspects. This research revealed that the use of English as a foreign language in the conversation of Indonesian photography enthusiasts was largely formed in a 'word' that represent an intended meaning without explain it in a long way. Those terms are functioned to tell the information, experiences, facts, techniques in photography. The involvement of English in the photography register was assumed because several terms do not have equivalent sense in Indonesian language, so it better to use them in English. This research has also showed that the intention of using English in photography community as the characteristics to labeling their social identity, also increasing the speaker's social value, particularly in creating feelings of pride and prestige.]]>

<![CDATA[Short stories provide readers series of events that take place in the life of the characters. For both enjoyment and reflection, the events are considerably constructed by the writer to share meaningful values. Readers can learn how the characters solve problems to overcome obstacles. This study discusses the personality traits of the main character and how they are described in the short story “The Nightmare before Christmas.” Qualitative method, with the approach of content analysis focusing on the main character Jack Skellington, was applied. Through a close reading, it was found that the main character was a brave person who loved to experience new things. For his brevity to a new breakthrough in what he had done in the past, he was kind of cool person. Fundamentally, he was also a loving and loyal character. All of these inner strengths contribute to make the character more likeable. Meanwhile, the personality of the main character is predominantly shown through mixing method, that is a mixed of dramatic, characters on characters, and contextual characterization. This indicates that the main character, Jack Skellington is delineated by giving indirect descriptions and implicit statements aiming to show the personality traits of the main character to the readers]]>

<![CDATA[The purpose of this research is to reveal the clarity of the translation in the movie Saladin Al-Ayyubi. This research uses a qualitative approach with document analysis method. The data used in this study came from the dialog sentences of the two characters' speech in the subtitle of Saladin Al-Ayyubi episode 4 on the Arabic Cartoon YouTube channel and the results of a survey conducted on respondents totaling 21 participants. To collect data, the researcher watched and observed the movie Saladin Al-Ayyubi repeatedly to transcribe the movie. After that, the researcher distributed questionnaires to classify and analyze the types of methods, clarity, and audience responses to the Arabic - Indonesian translation in the Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi film. The findings of this study are the types of methods used in the Arabic - Indonesian translation of Saladin Al-Ayyubi movie and the level of clarity of the methods used according to the audience. The researcher found five out of eight Newmark methods used in the translation, namely (1) word-by-word method; (2) semantic method; (3 free method; (4) literal method; and (5) communicative method. The level of intelligibility in the Arabic - Indonesian subtitles of Saladin Al-Ayyubi movie shows that 19% of the text is at a low level of legibility, 59% of the text is at a medium level of legibility, and 22% of the text is at a high level of legibility.]]>

<![CDATA[Critical thinking helps students analyze information thoroughly and identify relevant information for themselves. Students are encouraged to think critically about their studies, which can be achieved through reflective learning. This study aims to understand the students' perceptions of reflective learning and how the students practice it in the class, especially in higher students. This research was done by using a qualitative, descriptive case study approach, the participants were 33 students and the participants for the interview were four women and two men enrolled in an Indonesian university from the English Education Department in the seventh semester and the same class. It can be concluded that the responses to the questionnaire are affirmative, supporting the practices and having a good perception of reflective learning. The practices of reflective learning that the students ever faced in the class are text diary and learning log. Reflective learning gives some benefits to the students such as building critical thinking and helping the students to prepare themselves.]]>

<![CDATA[This study examines the representation of woman against sexual violence in Photocopier, an Indonesian film directed by Wregas Bhanuteja. In film, women as sexual violence victims are often misrepresented through stereotyping as the helpless victims who need men’s help to deal with the situation or showing extreme violence against their perpetrators to exact revenge. If not stereotyped, women as sexual violence victims also tend to be fetishized as their victimized body often sexualized for erotic pleasures. In its protagonist, Sur, Photocopier took different approach by representing the victim as a woman with powers to fight against the sexual violence she experienced. This study focuses in examining how Sur exerts her powers and how those powers impacted the sexual violence case that she experienced. The study is conducted qualitatively using content analysis method which examines the visual aspects as well as dialogues from the film and applying Amy Allen’s theory of feminist power relation. The analysis identifies that Suryani possesses and exercises all three types of feminist power posed by Allen, which are “power-to,” “power-over,” and “power-with,” as a sexual violence victim. The study reveals that while the film tries to represent Sur as a powerful woman, she is also adjacently represented as a stereotypical powerless sexual violence victim who is helpless to fight against her perpetrators even after exercising all her powers both personally and collectively. However, such stereotypical representation may be necessary to show the reality of sexual violence victims and as a form of criticism against the mishandling of sexual violence case.]]>
