Abstract

This research is entitled Process Types on Students' Persuasive Text: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Study. The purpose of this research is to find out (1) what types of transitivity processes are found in student persuasion texts; and (2) what processes appear most dominant in the text. The theory used in this research is the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory which refers to the thinking of Halliday (2014). The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method. The data obtained was based on the results of students' persuasive writing with the title "How to keep ourselves healthy inside and outside". The research results showed that there were 5 types of processes found, namely Material Process (36,7%), Relational Process (23,5%), Mental Process (17,6%), Behavioral Process (14,7%) and Existential Process (7,3%). There was no verbal process found in the persuasive text. Of the five processes, material process is the type of process that appears most dominantly.

Abstract

This study explores the transformation of values in transnational remake movies, focusing on their popularity and the incorporation of new elements to suit target audience preferences. An analysis of The Lake House, a remake of the Korean film Il Mare, reveals shifts in values and the integration of American cultural aspects. These changes stem from audience demands, business considerations, and Hollywood's global influence. Remakes require more than simply reproducing original content; they involve capturing cultural nuances from both versions. Utilizing Hall's representation approach and qualitative methods, the study assesses transnational remakes and their conveyed values. The research identifies shifts from South Korean values to those of the American target market, such as the transition from interdependence to self-reliance and a preference for directness, assertion, and rationality. The American film industry should carefully evaluate the suitability of movies for its audiences, recognizing changes in scenes and messages. The establishment of American values in remakes is influenced by the success of original films and their formulas. As transnational products, movies must be repackaged for target audiences. The industry faces complex processes to align the values of popular films with audience tastes while maintaining the essence of original works.

Abstract

Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now: Redux (2001), a 2001 re-release of his 1979 Vietnam War epic, sparked significant discussions among both academic scholars and mainstream media. The extended version, which features almost an hour-long addition of new scenes, challenged the question of the film’s continued relevance within the evolving Hollywood industry. While the original version may have highlighted the horror and dehumanization of the Vietnam War, it was also criticized for depicting women as one-dimensional sexual objects and effectively silencing their voices. However, by utilizing Verstraten’s notion of filmic narrative, Mulvey’s visual pleasure, and Stark’s narrative voicelessness, this research aims to show how narrative tension is displayed in Apocalypse Now: Redux and how it highlights the representation of the female characters’ subjectivity. We argue that the Redux version offers a notable difference from the stereotypical portrayal of women in war film. By incorporating the newly added scenes, Apocalypse Now: Redux provides the female characters with more agency and individuality, allowing them to move beyond the limitation of being mere decorations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the representation of Zainichi as Subalterns in Min Jin Lee's Pachinko. The subject of the subalterns is the Korean diaspora, who are struggling against oppression, marginalization, and discrimination in Japanese society. The researcher uses descriptive and qualitative research methods, while Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's subaltern theory has been applied to the selected text. The data will be taken from many aspects such as dialogues, depiction of the situation or event, characters, etc. This study analysed two problems: (1) How is the representation of Zainichi as Subalterns in Min Jin Lee's Pachinko? (2) How is the subaltern resisting the impact of subalternity in Min Jin Lee's Pachinko? First, the results of this study reveal that the form of discrimination and marginalization experienced by Zainichi are indicative of the existence of subalternity in Japan, which was represented in the Pachinko written by Min Jin Lee. Secondly, this research reveals that hybridity and ethical politics became Zainichi's way of speaking out as a form of resistance to subalternity. Moreover, the Korean diaspora and their descendants represented the subalterns in Pachinko. At the same time, women are considered inferior to men and people who have ideologies and beliefs that are different from Japanese ideology. This study is fascinating because subaltern issues exist long after the postcolonial period

Abstract

Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) is related to society nowadays and can lead to narcissism. Therefore, this research objective was to analyze how FoMO constructs narcissism in Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on The Train through three major characters, including Rachel Watson, Megan Hipwell, and Anna Watson. The research was done by applying the FoMO process, the FoMO scale, and Freud’s psychoanalytic theory to answer the research objective. The research method was qualitative, in which data was written in the text, and researchers became the research instrument to gather primary data and second data. Primary data for this research was taken from Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train, consisting of words, utterances, and quotations. Meanwhile, secondary data sources were obtained from e-books, journals, and articles. Through this research, it was found that the major characters suffer from social and news FoMO, indicated by the perception of missing out and compulsive behavior in maintaining those social connections. Further, the FoMO indirectly construct their narcissism, which is characterized by megalomania, self-love, and personality.

Abstract

Bangka is well-known as the Tin Island. Tin mining in Bangka, both on land and at sea, actually causes environmental damage. This has been a serious issue for a long time, impacting Bangkanese lives from children to adults, in addition to air pollution. That is why the purpose of highlighting the topic is to explore the elements of green literature organized in the children's book Tata Kata: Kumpulan Cerita Anak, written by several young Bangka writers. Published in 2020, it consists of ten short stories for children at age 10–12, and one of the provided themes is environment. Interestingly, the concept of ecocriticism is present within the object itself. The study employed a descriptive-qualitative method to formulate the answers to the problem. The data were obtained through observation and in-depth interviews with the authors. The data analysis technique from Miles and Huberman (2014) played a vital role to process the data set in order to acquire profound information. The findings classified the key elements of green literature in the children's book Tata Kata: Kumpulan Cerita Anak into three categories: (a) environmental citizenship, (b) care ethics, and (c) ecoliteracy. The authors fully support the existence of these elements, as they aim to raise awareness and persuade Bangkanese children to protect and care for the environment in light of the massive emerging damage. Furthermore, the young writers implicitly criticized the nature of Bangka, which is currently endangered. It means that Bangkanese children are expected to be environmental heroes/heroines in the next few years.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to present a latent racial and gendered issue repeatedly taking place in American society as depicted by two novels produced within 70 years interval of time. Maud Martha was published in 1953 and The Hate U Give in 2017. Using critical discourse analysis and qualitative research methods, this article aims to explicate the causes of the unjust construction of Black women's power relations and how Black women cope with such unfavorable situations in such very different eras. Critical discourse analysis observes people's interactions through language because language is the basic element of life and the way truth and power are produced. In power contestation, discourse plays two opposing roles i.e., maintaining or preserving the system of dominion on one side and in another side fighting against the system of dominion. Seizing discourse means seizing power. The ongoing unjust construction of racial power relations is the major discourse that Maud Martha and Starr Carter have to live in. They exercise power producing discourses of their own as their resistance against the ongoing unfavorable major discourse. The contestation of power leads to hard mass demonstrations in The Hate U Give and a solemn understanding of living a peaceful life in Maud Martha.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal Gus Baha’s (hereafter referred to as GB) moderation thoughts in presenting discourse on bank interest. The data sources used are the videos of GB’s Islamic lectures broadcasted by several YouTube channels. The oral text data is sorted, based on relevant theme. The data were then studied, based on Fairclough’s (1,2) discourse analysis framework, focusing on textual analysis, and its interpretation. This study applied a lexicographer tool, Ant.Cont. 3.5.9, to map the lexical choices in the speeches. Based on the analysis, the construction of the discourse is marked by the use of certain words like wong (people) for making many story telling to build a logics, the dominance of declarative structure to convey his views and reasons, the humor register to create a friendly atmosphere, and intertextuality of issue history and opinions of some big NU clerics to support his arguments. The main objective of developing a moderate and balanced discourse of bank interest is to build social control as an effort to create a conducive religious and social climate, by providing comprehensive views/arguments to accommodate the variety of opinions that arise. The function of GB’s discourse is to steer a middle way for the disputes in Muslim society

Abstract

To achieve an ideal democratic process, voters need to have sufficient information about every candidate before making a well-informed decision. To understand the candidates’ values, one can look at their particular language choice which is realized in their idea representations from text elements (vision and mission statement) and persona representations from visual elements (campaign posters). Combining two theoretical frameworks, Systemic Functional Linguistics and The Grammar of Visual Design, this research aims to explain how presidential and vice presidential represent their ideas and personas through vision and mission and campaign posters in the 2024 Indonesia Presidential Election. Finding shows SFL and Visual Design Grammar can explain how politicians reflect their thought and ideas into set of material and mental clauses while supporting the clauses with respective posters, as shown by Candidate 1 and Candidate who enhance their ideas with a coherence visual elaboration, meanwhile Candidate 3 do not show idea and persona congruity in their texts and image representations
