Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic medical condition that requires continuous management to prevent life-threatening complications, especially in the elderly population. This article discusses a community service program involving education and hypertension exercise in the working area of the Berbah Health Center, Yogyakarta.  The program addresses key issues such as low community awareness about blood pressure control and limited access to healthcare facilities. The methods used include three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation stage involved assessing the needs of the elderly, coordinating with the health center, and preparing educational materials and logistics. The implementation stage comprised interactive health education sessions and hypertension exercise led by professional instructors. Finally, the evaluation stage involved pre- and post-tests to measure knowledge improvement and blood pressure reduction. The program targeted 60 elderly individuals, with 12 participants actively engaging in the activities. The results demonstrated that 75% of participants experienced significant improvement in their understanding of hypertension and a measurable reduction in blood pressure, highlighting the effectiveness of combining education and physical activity in community-based health programs.

Abstract

The proper use of drugs is a challenge in society. The level of public knowledge regarding the proper use of drugs is still low. Many people still do not understand the beyond use date (BUD) of semi-solid preparations. BUD is the limit of the drug is still safe and can be used after the packaging is opened, not the same as the Expired date (ED) listed on the drug packaging. So this can cause misunderstanding and is a new thing for the public to know the BUD of a drug preparation. The community service activity on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 15.30 WIB took place at the Ainun Jariyah Mosque, Kertan Hamlet, Sumberagung, Jetis, Bantul Regency was attended by 31 residents. After pharmacist education was carried out through lectures, and assisted by leaflet media, there was a difference in the number of participants with a moderate pretest level, namely from 6 to 19 people. Education about ED and BUD accompanied by leaflet media can increase public knowledge as seen from the difference in pretest and posttest which shows the number of participants with an increase in correct answers during the pretest and posttest of 68%.

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, often referred to as a "silent killer" due to its asymptomatic nature. Its prevalence in Indonesia is increasing, reaching 34.1% among individuals aged 18 years and over in 2018. Traditional herbal medicine can treat degenerative diseases, but its use is still limited due to inadequate public knowledge. This community service program aims to provide education about hypertension and the use of traditional herbal medicine in Dusun Beji, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The program includes health education, blood pressure checks, and promotion of herbal medicine for hypertension management. A total of 34 participants (85% attendance) attended the session, with 26 completing pretest and posttest questionnaires to evaluate increased knowledge. The majority of participants were elderly (?61 years, 50%) and female (69.2%), with 69.2% showing abnormal blood pressure levels. Educational materials, including presentations and brochures, were provided along with live demonstrations of herbal preparations. Post-test results showed a slight increase in mean score from 7.73 to 7.88, with increased homogeneity of data and an increase in median from 7 to 8. Although paired t-test showed no statistically significant difference (P=0.885), descriptive analysis showed an increase in understanding and awareness. Active participation during the discussion, especially regarding herbal preparations, reflected the community's interest in adopting alternative approaches to hypertension management. This initiative has succeeded in increasing awareness of hypertension and the benefits of herbal medicines to effectively manage the chronic disease and its complications.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition in which the level of hemoglobin in the blood is less than normal. Adolescent girls are a group that is prone to anemia due to several factors including malnutrition, menstruation, socioeconomic status and adolescent knowledge. Providing education is one way to increase adolescent knowledge related to anemia in adolescents. This service activity will be carried out at SMP Muh. 1 Lime. This activity begins with the preparation stage, coordinates and prepares facilities and infrastructure, the implementation stage begins with the pretest and the provision of education using animated videos, as well as posttest. The final stage is reporting activities and follow-up plans. This activity is a follow-up to research that has been carried out in 2021 with the title "Increasing Adolescent Knowledge About Anemia Through Problem-Based Animation Education at SMP N.1 Kalasan". Based on the results of hemoglobin examination in 8th grade students, 18 people had hemoglobin levels below normal (<12g/dl). Of the 18 students who had anemia, there were 2 students who had severe anemia where Hb was 4.1g/dl and 8.5gr/dl. Based on the results of the pretest, it was found that the average knowledge of 8th grade students of Muhammadiyah 1 Gamping Junior High School was 78. This was because screening and education about anemia had never been carried out on adolescent girls at Muhammadiyah 1 Gamping Junior High School. The intervention provided in this activity is education about anemia in young women using animated media that has been used in the 2021 research. The results obtained after being given education, students were able to correctly answer some of the questions asked at the end of the activity. Abstract

Hypertension is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Continuously high blood pressure conditions will cause the heart to work harder, so this condition will result in damage to the blood vessels, heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes. To achieve an increase in public health status through comprehensive health care, joint efforts from all levels of society are urgently needed so that health status is more evenly distributed. For this reason, it is considered necessary to pay attention to high-risk groups, namely the elderly, who need special treatment. The results of the health status of the elderly in RW 08 Patang Puluhan Village found that many older people did not understand the complications of hypertension and how to prevent them, so counseling about hypertension was necessary. Thirty-one participants attended this service. The activity was held at the Pendopo of Sindurejan Village, Patangpuluhan. Community service, as an effort to realize the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, is expected to help health promotion programs and interest the elderly in early detection or control of hypertension so that if there are signs of disease symptoms, they can be detected earlier. In addition, this community service can be a means to increase knowledge about hypertension. Implementation of activities consists of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The results of community service showed that the knowledge of the elderly before and after education increased knowledge, with the mean value for the pretest score being 69.35 and the mean value for the posttest score being 92.34. So there is an increase of 22.99. Based on the Paired T-Test statistical test, there is a significant difference between knowledge before and after being given counseling with a p-value of 0.000. Suggestions for further development of community service require assistance from the Puskesmas Wirobrajan so that the elderly can apply the knowledge that has been obtained optimally. For the role of elderly cadres, support is needed from various aspects, such as coordination with the Puskesmas in realizing a sustainable program through the Posyandu Lansia.
