Abstract

Motivation plays a critical role in second language acquisition, particularly in developing listening skills, which are often overlooked in traditional ESL classrooms. This study examines the role of Randall’s ESL-Lab, a digital learning platform, in enhancing student motivation and engagement in listening activities. Data were collected through structured interviews with five participants from the English Teaching Department at UIN Walisongo. The findings reveal that the platform’s interactive features, level-based exercises, and accessibility significantly improve students' listening skills and foster a proactive approach to independent learning. Participants reported increased motivation to engage with English both in and outside the classroom, highlighting the platform's ability to make learning enjoyable and flexible. This study underscores the importance of integrating digital tools like Randall’s ESL-Lab into ESL instruction to enhance student motivation and listening comprehension. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term impacts and broader applications of such digital tools in language learning.

Abstract

This research aims to enhance students' critical reading abilities by incorporating a metaphorming method based on local wisdom and utilizing flip applications in a Reading Skills course. The study employed a classroom action research approach, conducted over two cycles. Each cycle included four phases: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection methods included observations, tests, and questionnaires, which were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. The findings revealed that integrating local wisdom-based metaphorming, specifically using Gorontalo folklore as teaching material, effectively improved students' critical reading skills. Additionally, the flip application served as an interactive learning medium, significantly boosting student engagement during the learning process. Student performance showed notable progress, with the percentage of those achieving the minimum passing grade increasing from 21.62% in the first cycle to 81.08% in the second cycle. This method demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing both critical reading skills and students' motivation. The study recommends adopting similar approaches in other courses to foster students' critical thinking and creativity

Abstract

This study analyzes the speech acts in the poem "Aku" by Chairil Anwar using a pragmatic approach to uncover the meaning contained in locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. As one of the most iconic poems in Indonesia, "Aku" embodies expressions of freedom, resistance, and individual existence articulated through distinctive language choices. The aim of this study is to understand how the message in this poem is communicated through these three types of speech acts and its relevance in the social and cultural context of Chairil Anwar's era. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The data, in the form of the poem "Aku", is analyzed based on speech act theory. The analysis process includes identifying the types of speech acts, interpreting the meaning based on the pragmatic context, and evaluating the perlocutionary effects generated by each line of the poem. The results show that the poem is rich in locutionary acts that affirm the poet's self-expression, illocutionary acts that reflect a stance of resistance to social norms, and perlocutionary acts that inspire readers to reflect on the meaning of freedom and courage. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that the poem "Aku" by Chairil Anwar is not only an aesthetic literary work but also imbued with pragmatic values that reinforce the message of courage, freedom, and personal identity. These findings are expected to enrich pragmatic studies in Indonesian poetry and provide new insights into how speech acts can be used to understand the messages in literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of using educational games on improving students' vocabulary mastery in learning English and Japanese. Using a quantitative and experimental approach, this study involved students who were learning both foreign languages, both at secondary school and college levels. The research sample was selected using a purposive sampling method, and the instruments used included pre-test, post-test, observation, and questionnaire. The results of the analysis showed a significant increase in students' vocabulary mastery after interacting with educational games, with a p value <0.05. In addition, observations showed that students were more active and motivated in learning using educational games compared to conventional methods. The questionnaire revealed that the majority of students felt more confident in using new vocabulary and were more motivated to learn. These findings are in line with previous studies showing that gamification elements in educational games increase student engagement and motivation. However, the effectiveness of educational games can vary depending on the type of game used and the individual learning preferences of students. This study concludes that educational games can be an effective learning tool in improving vocabulary mastery, provided that they are adjusted to students' preferences and learning styles. Further studies are recommended to explore the most influential gamification elements and combine educational games with traditional methods for more optimal results.

Abstract

Literary learning in elementary school plays an important role in shaping character, improving literacy, and instilling cultural values. Folklore that is rich in moral messages and close to students' daily lives is still not optimally utilized. This study uses a literature study method with a descriptive qualitative approach to examine the effectiveness of a systematic approach in learning folklore. The results of the study show that the application of systematic stages from text selection to creative activities can improve literary understanding, critical thinking, and instill character values such as honesty, responsibility, and courage. This approach is in line with the objectives of the Independent Curriculum and is relevant to be widely applied in primary schools

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing poetry appreciation among fifth-grade students at SDN 5 Kabila, Indonesia. Literary instruction in Indonesian primary schools often lacks creative depth, particularly in poetry, leading to limited student engagement and emotional expression. Adopting a qualitative descriptive case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and visual documentation involving 22 students and one language teacher. Findings reveal that PjBL significantly improves student participation, confidence, and emotional articulation. Students actively engaged in writing, illustrating, and presenting their poems, fostering collaboration and creative autonomy. Teachers reported increased motivation and deeper literary understanding among learners. The study concludes that PjBL provides a transformative learning experience that bridges academic and affective growth in primary education. This research contributes to the growing discourse on constructivist approaches in language arts and offers practical insights for educators seeking to enrich poetry instruction through active, student-centered methodologies.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent to which the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach can increase students' motivation in learning English. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six students of the English Education study program who attended CLIL-based lectures. Data were analyzed thematically based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) framework. The results showed that CLIL had a positive impact on students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Students feel more interested, involved, and internally motivated because the material is delivered contextually and relevantly. In terms of extrinsic motivation, academic demands and professional goals encourage them to study harder. The conclusion of this study shows that the implementation of CLIL can be an effective strategy in increasing motivation to learn English. The implication of this finding is the importance of curriculum development and teacher training that supports the sustainable implementation of CLIL in higher education.
