Abstract

The limited availability of learning media that integrate local cultural contexts within STEAM-based instruction remains a challenge in optimizing fine motor skill development in childhood education. This study aims to develop a Local Culture Oriented STEAM–Project-Based Learning (STEAM-PJBL) module and examine its feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing fine motor skills among children aged 4–5 years. The study employed a Research and Development approach by adapting the Borg and Gall model into six stages: needs analysis, instructional design, prototype development, expert validation, product revision, and limited field testing. Participants included one content expert, one media expert, early childhood teachers, and eight children aged 4–5 years. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and pre- and post-tests of fine motor skills. The findings show high feasibility, with content validity of 91.6% and media validity of 89%. Teacher responses indicated high practicality at 92%. The module effectively improved children's fine motor skills, as shown by a significant increase in mean scores from 67.0 to 80.75 (p < 0.05). The novelty of this study lies in integrating local cultural contexts across all stages of STEAM-PJBL design, positioning fine motor development as a core learning outcome in early childhood education.

Abstract

Marine environmental awareness in early childhood is essential to fostering lifelong environmental responsibility. This study evaluates the comparative effectiveness of STEAM and scientific approaches on children’s marine awareness, specifically examining the moderating role of critical thinking among second-grade students in West Java, Indonesia. Using a quasi-experimental design with a 2×2 factorial structure, the study involved 51 children aged 7–8 years. Data were collected using the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) Scale adapted for children and a critical thinking assessment rubric, then analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA. Results confirmed that the STEAM approach significantly outperformed the scientific approach in enhancing marine awareness (F(1, 45)=111.65, p<.001). Crucially, a significant interaction effect (F(2, 45)=3.49, p=.039) revealed that the efficacy of STEAM was amplified in students with higher critical thinking skills (M=136.27) compared to the scientific group (M=112.75). Practically, these findings advocate for shifting early environmental pedagogy from linear scientific inquiry to transdisciplinary STEAM models. Educators are recommended to integrate critical thinking scaffolding within STEAM activities to maximize marine literacy and environmental responsibility in young learners.

Abstract

Mastery motivation is an internal drive to master challenging tasks and achieve competence. In the context of early childhood teachers in Indonesia, studies on this topic remain limited. This research aims to explore the level of mastery motivation among kindergarten teachers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and identify the factors that influence it. A qualitative, exploratory approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis with 15 teachers representing the five districts in Yogyakarta. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify patterns of meaning and characteristics of mastery motivation. The findings reveal three levels of mastery motivation high, moderate, and low with most teachers falling within the moderate to high categories. Teachers with high motivation demonstrated strong learning orientation, persistence, and innovative behaviors in improving teaching practices. Meanwhile, moderate motivation tended to fluctuate, influenced by administrative burdens, limited time, and work demands. These findings highlight that mastery motivation is multidimensional and shaped by individual, social, and institutional factors. This study is expected to broaden understanding of professional motivation among early childhood teachers, provide empirical foundations for educational policies and sustainable teacher competency development programs, and open opportunities for further, more in-depth research

Abstract

The suboptimal implementation of religious and moral values in early childhood learning has created a gap between curriculum planning and classroom practice. This study aims to develop an "Imtaq" (Faith and Piety) project-based learning program designed to strengthen religious and moral values in early childhood education. The research involved 48 early childhood learners and four teachers from RA Matholiul Ulum and BA Danurejo 1. The study employed the ADDIE Development model, consisting of the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. During the Development stage, expert validation was conducted by two specialists in Early Childhood Education and learning program Development. The validation results were analysed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test. The findings indicated that the calculated t-value was 3.408, while the Sig. (2-tailed) The value was 0.001, which is lower than 0.05. This demonstrates that the program effectively integrates core religious values such as honesty, tolerance, and empathy into children's daily learning experiences. Overall, the results indicate that project-based learning centred on faith and devotion can strengthen children's religious concepts while fostering the comprehensive Development of religious and moral values

Abstract

The increase in cases of violence against children during the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the urgent need for effective and coordinated child protection efforts, as such violence has severe long-term impacts on children's physical and psychological Development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Women and Children Protection Task Force in preventing violence against children in Sukoharjo Regency. The study employed a qualitative case study approach involving 15 key informants from cross-sector institutions, including government agencies, health services, psychologists, and community representatives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, observation, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, with sources, methods, and theories triangulated to ensure validity. The findings indicate a high level of effectiveness, reflected in clear goal orientation, timely case handling, comprehensive holistic services, and a reduction in reported cases of violence against children. These results imply that a cross-sector task-force-based approach is practical for child violence prevention and can be integrated into early childhood education programs as a sustainable preventive strategy.
