Abstract

Piper betle L. leaves are known to contain various secondary metabolites with antibacterial potential; however, information regarding the effect of extraction methods and ethanol concentration on antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extraction methods and ethanol concentration on the antibacterial activity of Piper betle leaf extract against C. acnes. Extraction was performed using maceration and reflux methods with 70% and 96% ethanol as solvents. Characterization was carried out through quality parameter evaluation, phytochemical screening, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and bioautography analysis. Antibacterial activity was determined using the disc diffusion method at extract concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30%. The results showed that maceration using 96% ethanol produced the highest yield (10.27%) and the strongest antibacterial activity with an inhibition zone diameter of 17.9 ± 0.42 mm at 30% concentration. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and steroids/triterpenoids. Bioautography analysis revealed active spots that were presumed to contribute to antibacterial activity. Statistical analysis indicated that extract concentration and ethanol concentration significantly affected antibacterial activity (p < 0.05), whereas extraction methods did not show a significant effect. These findings indicate that Piper betle leaf extract has potential to be further developed as a natural source for anti-acne formulations.

Abstract

Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel waste is an abundant but underutilized biomass rich in bioactive compounds with potential as anti-aging agents. Addressing this issue, this study introduces a novel in silico multi-target approach to explore the bioactive potential of this waste. The objective is to identify molecular targets and evaluate binding affinities using network pharmacology, molecular docking, and ADMET predictions. Network pharmacology analysis of nine test compounds identified an intersection of 70 anti-aging-related target proteins. Topological analysis established AKT1, SRC, and TNF as the main hub proteins. Molecular docking simulations demonstrated that phyllocactin consistently exhibited the most stable binding affinity toward all targets, with the lowest Rerank Score on the TNF receptor (-176.727 kcal/mol), showing in silico competitive potential surpassing its native ligand. ADMET predictions indicated that phyllocactin possesses a favorable safety profile, being non-hepatotoxic and non-mutagenic for topical applications. In conclusion, phyllocactin from dragon fruit peel waste holds significant potential as a multi-target anti-aging candidate, although these preliminary findings warrant further experimental validation.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the four non-communicable diseases categorized as a top priority, requiring long-term management to prevent serious complications. Glycemic control is a critical factor in managing the disease, yet medication non-adherence remains a significant challenge. The Chronic Disease Management Program (Prolanis) aims to optimize participants' quality of life via BPJS Kesehatan (National Health Insurance provider). This study aimed to determine the relationship between therapeutic adherence and glycemic control among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) Prolanis participants at the Prambanan Public Health Center, Sleman. This observational study employed a cross-sectional design and included 34 participants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results indicated that the majority of participants—21 individuals (61.8%)—were non-adherent to therapy, with 12 of them (57.1%) having uncontrolled glycemic levels. Among the 13 participants (38.2%) who adhered to therapy, 11 (84.6%) achieved controlled glycemic levels. There was an association between therapeutic adherence and glycemic control in T2DM Prolanis participants at the Prambanan Public Health Center, Sleman.

Abstract

Pharmacists’ communication skills are soft skills that determine the quality of pharmaceutical services; however, research specifically examining their impact on patient perceptions at pharmacies in Bandung City remains quite limited. This study aims to analyze the impact of pharmacists’ communication skills on patients’ perceptions of service at pharmacies in Bandung City. A quantitative method was used, employing convenience sampling. Data were collected via a questionnaire distributed through Google Forms to 326 respondents, namely residents of Bandung City who had previously purchased medication at a pharmacy. The research instrument consisted of 12 questions on a 1–4 Likert scale measuring the variable of pharmacists’ communication skills (X) in relation to patients’ perceptions of pharmaceutical services at pharmacies (Y), and was analyzed using linear regression; this instrument was based on a previous study (Kim et al., 2020). The results of the validity test using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that all items were valid with factor loadings ≥ 0.4, and the Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test indicated reliable values for all variables (Skills = 0.912; Perception = 0.782; Expectation = 0.637). The results of the regression analysis show an R-squared value of 22.7% (0.227), indicating that pharmacists’ communication skills have a positive and significant effect on patients’ perceptions. Therefore, improving pharmacists’ communication skills should be a primary focus of professional training and development to ensure better patient care.

Abstract

Antimicrobial deodorants offer a viable solution for managing body odor. The red shoot plant (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) contains bioactive compounds with promising antimicrobial properties, providing a natural alternative that circumvents the long-term health risks associated with synthetic agents. Furthermore, kombucha fermentation can break down these complex phytochemicals into simpler molecules while triggering the synthesis of novel organic acids, thereby enhancing both the bioactivity and dermal penetration of the plant's active constituents. This study aimed to develop a spray deodorant formulation utilizing red shoot extracts fermented with a kombucha culture for 12 days. The antimicrobial efficacy of the formulation was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans via UV-Vis spectrophotometry at 600 nm for bacteria and 580 nm for fungi. The results indicated that the fermented extract exhibited moderate inhibitory activity, yielding inhibition rates of 42.36% against E. coli, 38.51% against S. aureus, and 35.66% against C. albicans. The spray deodorants were formulated with varying concentrations of propylene glycol (5, 10, and 15%) as an excipient. Physical and safety evaluations encompassed organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, skin irritation, drying time, and spray patterns. Among the preparations, Formula 3 (F3) demonstrated the most optimal antimicrobial performance, maintained favorable physical stability, and induced no skin irritation. Consequently, this formulation holds significant potential for further development, specifically by optimizing the active ingredient concentration to maximize its antimicrobial efficacy.

Abstract

Parents occasionally mix paracetamol drops with date juice concentrate before administration a paracetamol drops to children to mask the bitter taste of the paracetamol. Such a practice may result in interactions between paracetamol and the chemical constituents present in date juice concentrate, potentially affecting the drug's stability. This study aimed to evaluate the stability of paracetamol concentration in paracetamol drops after being mixed with date juice concentrate under different storage conditions. Paracetamol drops were mixed with date juice concentrate and stored at room temperature (≤30°C) and refrigerated conditions (2–8°C). Organoleptic properties and paracetamol concentration were evaluated at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, 120, 180, and 1440 minutes using UV–Visible spectrophotometer. The organoleptic evaluation demonstrated that the mixture remained stable as a dark brown liquid with the characteristic odor for up to 24 hours under both storage conditions. Results showed a decrease in paracetamol concentration during 24 hours of storage; however, because the study did not include a paracetamol-only control group, this decrease cannot be definitively attributed to date juice concentrate, and the interpretation should therefore be limited to the observed change in paracetamol concentration in the mixture during storage. Under room temperature and refrigerated conditions, the remaining paracetamol concentrations after 24 hours were 43.291 ± 0.437% and 38.527 ± 0.019%, respectively. Statistical analysis indicated no significant difference in the reduction of paracetamol concentration between the two storage conditions. In conclusion, mixing of paracetamol drops with foods or beverages, such as date juice concentrate, may affect paracetamol stability and can cause reducing of paracetamol concentration.
