Abstract

Betadin leaf (Jatropha multifida L.) is an ornamental plant in Indonesia and is rarely used, but its leaf sap has been reported to accelerate wound healing due to skin infections. This has the potential to be used for the development of new antimicrobial agents. The extraction method was carried out by maceration using 96% ethanol and fractionation with ethyl acetate. Extracts and fractions analyzed for the presence of various phytochemical constituents. Antibacterial assay used disc diffusion (Kirby-Bauer's) method towards Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum. Ethanol extract of Betadin leaves contained Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Phenolics, Steroids, Terpenes, Saponins, while the ethyl acetate fraction contained Alkaloids, Phenolics, Terpenes. J. multifida leaf ethanol extract has strong activity towards Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum, and has weak activity towards Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. While J. multifida leaf ethyl acetate fraction has strong activity towards Propionibacterium acnes, Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum, and has weak activity towards Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Based on the results of this study can be concluded that both the ethanol extract and the ethyl acetate fraction of Betadin leaves (Jatropha multifida L.) had the ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, then can be antimicrobial candidate of herbal medicine

Abstract

The high use of antibiotics can trigger resistance. Currently, people often make mistakes in obtaining, using, storing and disposing of drugs properly. This is one of the consequences of the lack of accurate information and the very low level of public education. Providing education on the use of antibiotics is important so that patients get maximum drug effectiveness and prevent resistance. This study aims to determine the effect of leaflets on patient knowledge about DAGUSIBU (Get, Use, Store, Discard) antibiotics at Sungai Ulin Public Health Center, Banjarbaru City. The type of research used was a pre-experiment with a one group pretest–post test research design. Sampling used a purposive sampling technique on 87 respondents. The pretest was given before education and the posttest was given 2 weeks after education. From the research results, the average value of the patient's pretest knowledge was 65.99% and the posttest was 87.83%. The statistical test method used was the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with an Asymp. Sig 2 tailed result of 0.000. This shows a significance value of <0.05, which means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted, where there is a significant difference in knowledge between before and after the intervention was given through leaflet media.

Abstract

Indonesia ranks second in diabetes mellitus with 20.4 million sufferers in 2024 and will increase to 28.5 million in 2025. This condition shows the urgency of finding new alternative antidiabetic candidates that can help reduce the number of sufferers. Landep leaves contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, and phenolics, which have potential as antidiabetic agents. This study aims to determine the effect of landep leaf extract administration on postprandial blood glucose levels and histopathological improvements in the pancreas in alloxan-induced rats. This experimental study used 25 alloxan-induced rats divided into 5 groups: negative control (CMC-Na 1%), positive control (Metformin 9 mg/200g rat body weight), and landep leaf extract at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight. Treatment was administered for 14 days. Data analysis was performed using SPSS with ANOVA. The results showed that landep leaf extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW had a significant effect on reducing postprandial blood glucose spikes (p=0.634) compared to the positive control metformin, as well as a significant effect on improving the area of the islets of Langerhans (p=0.978) compared to the positive control. Thus, landep leaf extract has an effect on reducing postprandial blood glucose spikes and provides an improvement in the histopathology of the pancreas of alloxan-induced rats.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose. Untreated hyperglycemia can lead to the production of free radicals and increased oxidative stress, which play a key role in the destruction of pancreatic beta cells and microvascular complications, such as kidney failure. Physalis angulata L. is known to have antihyperglycemic activity and contains antioxidants that have the potential to protect kidney function. This study aims to determine the effect of single administering aqueous extract of ceplukan herb and in combination with metformin on creatinine levels in rat models of kidney failure and diabetes mellitus. The test animals, male Wistar rats, were given renal failure induction treatment using the ischemic reperfusion method and given alloxan 150 mg/kgBW to induce diabetes mellitus and were given a single treatment of ceplukan herb water extract 7 mg/kgBW and a combination of ceplukan herb water extract 3.5 mg/kgBW with metformin 22.5 mg/kgBW given orally for 21 days. The results of the study showed that a single administration of ceplukan herb water extract showed the highest percentage of creatinine inhibition (55.84%) compared to the combination group (50.55%) in rats as animal models of kidney failure and diabetes mellitus. Therefore, it can be concluded that a single administration of ceplukan herb water extract is more effective in reducing creatinine levels in rats as animal models of kidney failure and diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

The use of chemical-based mosquito repellents has excellent repellent power, but their use can cause hypersensitivity and irritation. In Indonesia, there are several plants that contain essential oils and have mosquito repellent effects. One of them is cosmos (Tagetes erecta L). Cosmos leaf extract is formulated into a lotion preparation so that it can adhere to the skin for a longer time, thus providing longer-lasting mosquito repellent properties. This research aims to determine the effect of varying cetyl alcohol concentrations on the physical properties of lotion. There are 3 lotion formulas used with cetyl alcohol concentrations of 2% (F1), 2.5% (F2), and 3% (F3). The research results show that F1 has a thick texture and brownish-yellow color, F2 has a thick texture and green color, and F3 has a very thick texture and green color. All formulas are homogeneous. F1, F2, and F3 had pH values of 7.5±0, 7.5±0, and 7.9±0, respectively. F1, F2, and F3 have respective viscosities of 20±0 dPas, 30±0 dPas, and 35±0 dPas. F1, F2, and F3 had spreadability values of 8.48±0.51 cm, 7.81±0.05 cm, and 7.10±0.37 cm, respectively. The conclusion of this study is that variations in cetyl alcohol concentration affect the texture, color, pH, viscosity, and spreadability of the lotion.

Abstract

Excessive frequency and duration of UV exposure causes adverse effects, including erythema, pigmentation, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Therefore, additional protection is required, such as the use of sunscreen. The development of natural active ingredients is necessary to reduce the negative impact of sunscreen products. Tahongai (Kleinhovia hospita L) contains flavonoid compounds that have the potential as sunscreens due to the presence of chromophore groups that can absorb UVA and UVB rays. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of tahongai leaf infusion as a sunscreen. The test method of sunscreen activity was carried out in-vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The sunscreen activity test was carried out by calculating the percent transmission value (%Te), the percent transmission value of pigmentation (%Tp), and the SPF value. The results of the calculation of %Te, %Tp, and SPF values, as well as the sunscreen category at a concentration of 0.5 g are %Te of 3.368 (extra protection), %Tp of 1.248 (sunblock), and SPF value of 21.945 (ultra protection). Tahongai leaf infusion has potential as an active ingredient for sunscreen products and still requires further in vivo research to ensure its effectiveness as well as the duration of its protection

Abstract

The widespread emergence of antimicrobial resistance has intensified the search for plant-derived antibacterial agents as therapeutic alternatives. Soursop (Annona muricata L.) is widely recognised in Indonesian ethnomedicine as a plant effective against infections, owing to its rich and diverse secondary metabolite profile. This study was designed to examine the growth-inhibitory capacity of the ethyl acetate leaf fraction of soursop against pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in vitro, while concurrently identifying the fraction concentration producing the greatest inhibitory effect. Antibacterial testing employed the agar diffusion disc technique at three fraction concentrations: 10%, 20%, and 40% (w/v). The resulting inhibition zone diameters were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. All concentrations successfully suppressed the growth of both test organisms; the maximum inhibition was recorded at 40%, with mean inhibition zone diameters of 4.49 mm for S. aureus and 4.06 mm for E. coli. Statistical analysis confirmed a highly significant treatment effect (Fcount = 21.02; p<0.01). Accordingly, the ethyl acetate fraction of soursop leaves demonstrates dose-dependent antibacterial potential worthy of further development.
