Abstract

Oral health is an important aspect that should be considered as part of broader efforts to improve overall health (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2019). The prevalence of dental issues has increased from 23.3% to 25.9%. One of the major dental problems in Indonesia is dental caries, which is classified as a disease. Research on the activity of green tea leaf extract (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) from various solvent polarity levels has been conducted. This study aims to identify the activity of green tea leaf extract and its inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The extraction method used in this study was maceration with three solvent polarities: n-hexane (non-polar), ethyl acetate (semi-polar), and ethanol (polar). The extract's ability to inhibit bacteria was tested using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that 96% ethanol at a concentration of 10% had an inhibition zone of 11.02 mm (strong category).

Abstract

Soap is a cleanser made by a chemical reaction between sodium or potassium and fatty acids from vegetable oils or animal fats. Used cooking oil can be used as the main ingredient for the oil component in making solid soap used for washing dishes. This research aims to determine the effect of variations in NaOH concentration on the physical properties of solid soap preparations made from used cooking oil. Preparations were made with NaOH concentrations between 5% (F1), 8.5% (F2) and 12% (F3). The physical property tests carried out are organoleptic tests including texture, color and odor, pH test, water content test and foam height test. Organoleptic data shows that F1 has a smooth texture, yellow color and a weak lemon smell. F2 has a slightly rough texture, yellow color and a weak lemon smell. F3 has a rough texture, yellow color and does not smell like lemon. F1 pH value is 10.36 ± 0.16; F2 was 10.52 ± 0.33; and F3 of 10.47 ± 0.18. The results of the water content test showed that F1 data was 0.91% ± 0.25; F2 was 0.88% ± 0.04; and F3 of 1.04% ± 0.20. The foam height test results showed that F1 data was 6.97 ± 1.00 cm, F2 was 6.57 ± 0.38 cm, and F3 was 5.83 ± 0.32 cm. The conclusion is that NaOH variations concentration have an effect on the texture and smell of soap but have no effect on color, pH, water content and height of soap foam.

Abstract

Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea, L.) is a medicinal plant known for its pharmacological properties due to the presence of various bioactive compounds. This study aims to identify the macroscopic, microscopic, and phytochemical characteristics of the blue and light purple variants of butterfly pea flowers cultivated in Cipangeran Village, Saguling District, West Bandung Regency. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an experimental approach. Macroscopic identification was conducted by observing the color, shape, odor, and texture of the flowers, while microscopic observation was performed using powdered simplicia preparations under a microscope finding indentifier fragmen. Phytochemical screening was conducted using specific reagents to detect the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids/triterpenoids, and tannins. The results showed that both flower variants have morphological features typical of the Fabaceae family, with distinct color gradients and varied textures. Microscopic analysis revealed identifying fragments such as sclerenchyma, pollen grains, vascular bundles, covering trichomes, collenchyma, and idioblasts containing oil cells. Phytochemical screening indicated the presence of flavonoids, steroids/triterpenoids, tannins, and alkaloids in both variants. Saponins were detected only in the blue variant. These findings suggest that both blue and light purple butterfly pea flower variants have potential as raw materials for herbal health products.

Abstract

Esophageal cancer (ESCA) is one of the cancers with high mortality rates worldwide. Determination of prognostic biomarkers that can predict patient survival is very important to support more effective therapy management. The MIER3 gene has been reported to play a role in the regulation of gene expression and cell proliferation pathways, but its role in ESCA is still not fully understood. MIER3 gene expression data and patient clinical information were obtained from the UALCAN database based on TCGA. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method to evaluate the effect of MIER3 expression levels on ESCA patient survival. Further analysis was performed by combining MIER3 expression with clinical variables such as tumor grade, race, gender, and weight status. MIER3 expression was significantly higher in tumor tissue than in normal tissue. Kaplan-Meier showed that patients with high MIER3 expression had significantly lower survival than the low expression group (p = 0.00013). The combination of MIER3 expression and clinical factors such as gender (p = 0.00046), race (p = 0.0095), and body weight (p = 0.008) also showed a prognostic relationship to survival. MIER3 has the potential as a prognostic biomarker in esophageal cancer. High MIER3 expression correlates with poor prognosis, especially when combined with certain clinical factors. These findings suggest that MIER3 may play a role in tumor progression through molecular mechanisms involving activation of proliferative pathways and inhibition of apoptotic pathways, and support the development of gene expression-based targeted therapy.

Abstract

One of the common male sexual disorders is low libido (sexual desire). An alternative approach to overcome this problem is the use of aphrodisiacs, substances that stimulate and enhance sexual desire. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) contains flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids, which may improve blood circulation and potentially enhance sexual activity. This study aimed to evaluate the aphrodisiac activity of ethanolic extract of coriander herb (EHC) on the libido of male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The extract was obtained using the maceration method, while the aphrodisiac test was conducted on 25 male and 25 female rats aged 2–2.5 months with body weight ranging from 150–200 g. The animals were divided into five groups, each consisting of 5 males and 5 females: negative control (1% Na CMC), positive control (sildenafil 50 mg), and three treatment groups receiving EHC at doses of 400 mg/kgBW, 600 mg/kgBW, and 800 mg/kgBW. For five consecutive days (6:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.), one male and one female were placed in the same cage, and sexual activities of male rats (introducing and mounting) were observed using CCTV recordings. The results showed that EHC exhibited aphrodisiac activity at a dose of 800 mg/kgBW, which was not significantly different from the positive control (sildenafil 50 mg) (p=0.571). Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA indicated a significant difference among groups (p<0.05), and Tukey’s post-hoc test confirmed significant differences among all EHC dose groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, the ethanolic extract of coriander herb demonstrates potential as an aphrodisiac to enhance libido in male Wistar rats.
