Abstract

This study investigates substantial shifts in the rational paradigm and political identities in the Kaliwungu Industrial Area. Complexity, characterized by shifting values and emerging global identities, has co-opted the mode of existence of communities in sophisticated industrial countries. The dilemma between preserving local customs and the demands of globalization presents a distinct challenge. This study takes a qualitative approach, collecting data through approaches such as in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and critical analysis. Data sources are purposefully chosen from various strata of industrial society in order to acquire a comprehensive understanding. The investigation validates intriguing facts about Kaliwungu society. Based on the diffusion perspective, the result shows thatthere is a trend toward higher spiritual ideals in deciding societal positions, including political decisions. This plainly rules out the possibility of an exponential link between hedonism and industrialization. Furthermore, population movement from different origins to a given location is difficult, necessitating social harmonization and integration processes. Similarly, spiritual ideals, mental patterns, and social attitudes interact and change as a logical result of everyday exposure to modern values.

Abstract

In Indonesia’s political landscape, there is a current tension between identity politics and populist ideologies. Identity politics is a broad term used to describe political movements and actions related to religious identities and institutions, particularly in an Islamic setting. However, it raises concern about how we will investigate identity politics as part of a contextual, constituent-based approach to politics. The current study investigates Syafii Maarif’s political views. By employing a social hermeneutic approach and interpretive methodologies, this thought is elaborated in this study. The investigation reveals three primary elements of identity politics based on Maarif’s analysis: 1) ethnicity, 2) religion, and 3) political ideology. According to Maarif, any political activity that has these three characteristics is intrinsically saturated with identity politics. As a result, Muslim politics are often limited and narrowly defined. To address this constraint, the findings of this study advocate the actualization of the notion of identity politics to make space for populist politics. While religion, ethnicity, and political ideology coexist, a populist approach is still relevant in Islamic politics, persuasion methods, and specific constituency-based political connections.

Abstract

The article aims to provide an overview of the fundamental ideas in Indonesian national political settings, as well as their significance in solidifying the four pillars of Indonesian identity. Based on a library study of the works of two great Indonesian Ulama, Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani and Sheikh Hasyim Asy'ari, which were later analyzed using the content analysis method, the results revealed that the theological principles of the masters' actions in both the Qur'an and the hadith remained the basis of obedience, unity, brotherhood, and solidarity. Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani generally supports components of national commitment, conservation, and natural resource management in the political Islamic framework, and he does not oppose the concept of truth. While Sheikh Hasyim Asy'ari emphasized characteristics of government management such as leadership maturity, unity, and brotherhood, which resulted in the formation of the four national pillars as a consensus among the nation's citizens.

Abstract

This study explores Sufistic values within the Minangkabau philosophy of “Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah” (ABS-SBK) through the lens of Ibn Taymiyyah’s Sufism. Known for his critiques of excessive mysticism, Ibn Taymiyyah also advocates a balanced Sufism that integrates devotion to God with social benefit. This research adapts his ideas to the Minangkabau context, emphasizing the compatibility between Islamic spirituality and local traditions. Using a descriptive-analytical method with an integrative approach, the study draws on Ibn Taymiyyah’s works as primary sources, supplemented by relevant secondary literature. The findings highlight key Sufistic elements in ABS-SBK, including self-purification, simplicity in living, the integration of spirituality with social responsibilities, critical engagement with bid‘ah, alignment of adat (custom) with syarak (Islamic law), and the pivotal roles of religious scholars (ulama) and cultural leaders (pemangku adat). Additionally, it identifies Sufistic dimensions in the cultural role of Bundo Kanduang in Minangkabau society. This study offers a novel perspective by bridging Ibn Taymiyyah’s moderate Sufism with Minangkabau’s local wisdom, providing a model for harmonizing Islamic principles with indigenous traditions. Its implications extend to broader discussions on contextualizing Islamic spirituality within diverse cultural settings.

Abstract

Humans were created with a perfect soul, mind and intellect. But he often forgets the purpose of his creation. As a mirror of the Divine, humans can achieve Divine self-awareness, as the Prophet Muhammad said, ‘Whoever knows himself will know his Lord.’ According to Ibn ‘Arabī, humans who know their God are called insān kāmil, and insān kāmil recognised by God is called insān rabbānī. This article examines the steps and ways towards insān rabbānī according to Ibn ‘Arabī, and analyses the symbols and their meanings based on Charles S. Pierce's semiotic theory. The analysis is descriptive-explanatory based on content analysis. Initially, semiotic was only used in the empirical realm. It becomes interesting when semiotics is applied to the metaphysical realm; an attempt to think logically, philosophically, reflectively, and contextually in looking at Sufism in Indonesia. This article shows that the steps and ways to reach insān rabbānī; such as taubah, murāqabah, and ikhlāṣ, to reach waḥdah al-wujūd and musyāhadah. The symbol of insān rabbānī is depicted through the concept of waḥdah al-wujūd in a triadic process; that humans are the manifestation of God, the form of insān rabbānī is manifested in Rasūl, Prophet, Walī, and Waraṡah al-Anbiyā’, who act as caliphs of Allāh. With God’s adab and authority, insān rabbānī guides humans towards Divine self-awareness.

Abstract

With the increasing trend of religious mediatization, the topic of religious conversion has gained significant attention in the media, both as news content and as part of Islamic dakwah narratives in Indonesia. This narrative has been widely disseminated through new media and the internet, where religious conversion stories are frequently featured in Islamic dakwah videos that attract a large audience.  This article examines the “Kisah Mualaf” segment on the Vertizone TV channel and the “Log In” program on Deddy Corbuzier’s channel. “Kisah Mualaf`” presents narratives of dramatic transformation of the converts, biblical validation, and the perceived mutual threat between Islam and Christianity, shaping a dakwah content formula that represents a new generation of convert preachers. On the other hand, “Log In”, hosted by Husein Jafar, frames religious conversion narratives through comedic gimmicks while emphasizing Indonesian pluralism, reflecting the perspectives of moderate Islamic groups. Through this study, the author explores the contrasting discourses on religious conversion as a prominent narrative within Indonesia’s digital dakwah sphere. Employing content analysis, netnography, and a review of existing literature, the author argues that two dominant religious conversion narratives have emerged among digital preachers, constituting not only a competition for audience engagement but also a contestation of discourse within Indonesia’s Islamic digital dakwah landscape.

Abstract

This research explores the philosophical views of Fritjof Capra and Mulyadhi Kartanegara regarding nature, aiming to shift the anthropocentric reasoning of modern humans. The dominance of Western thought in the modern world, characterized by rationalism, materialism, and empiricism, has led to a lack of spiritual awareness. This mechanistic paradigm causes modern humans to perceive nature as a mere object, operating like a machine without spirituality, thus reducing it to an instrument for human exploitation. Consequently, this perspective fosters exploitative behaviors that contribute to the ongoing ecological crisis. To address this issue, Capra and Kartanegara propose new paradigms that prioritize not only human interests but also the well-being of the universe as a whole. Although they employ different approaches, both thinkers offer alternative paradigms emphasizing the unity of nature, respect for living beings, and human responsibility in maintaining ecological balance. Capra bases his views on modern science and ecology from a holistic perspective, while Kartanegara draws from Islamic theology and classical philosophy. This research is based on a literature study that examines the writings of both scholars alongside relevant secondary sources.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze Mehdi Hairi Yazdi’s contribution in responding to contemporary epistemological contestation through the idea of ‘ilm ḥuḍūrī. The main problem in modern epistemology lies in the relationship between the subject and object of knowledge, which tends to be dualistic in the Western epistemological tradition. Hairi Yazdi offers ‘ilm ḥuḍūrī as an alternative solution in modern epistemology. This research is a literature study using a qualitative method, and its data sources are from Mehdi Hairi Yazdi’s works and relevant research. The research findings show that Hairi Yazdi’s idea of ‘ilm ḥuḍūrī cannot only bridge the gap between rationalism and empiricism but provide a strong epistemological basis for the validity of mystical experiences. Furthermore, this idea offers a new perspective in studying Islamic philosophy. It contributes to the development of inclusive knowledge in facing the challenges of contemporary epistemology. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of ‘ilm ḥuḍūrī as an alternative paradigm that enriches contemporary epistemological discourse.

Abstract

Divine Humanism, initiated by Ali Shari’ati, offers an integrative view of forming human identity based on divine values. In this view, humans are understood not only as material entities but also as spiritual beings with moral responsibilities towards themselves, society, and God. Shari’ati emphasizes that the unity between humans, nature, and God is the foundation for building a complete human identity. This study aims to explore and understand the concept of divine Humanism in Ali Shari’ati’s thought, focusing on key works such as Man and Islam, Religion vs. Religion, and Marxism and Other Western Fallacies. The study explores the core ideas, principles, and implications of divine Humanism and how divine values contribute to forming human identity. It found that humans are considered material and spiritual beings with moral responsibilities towards God, self, and society. The concept of tawhid, which emphasizes the unity of God, man, and nature, is the basis of a complete human identity. Shari’ati's divine humanism criticizes secularism and secular humanism, which ignore spirituality, fuel moral crises, ethical relativism, and alienation. As an alternative, he places divine values such as justice, compassion, and social responsibility at the core of human identity and the driver of social transformation. This study makes an important contribution to global social issues by offering Ali Shari‘ati’s divine humanism approach as a framework for understanding and overcoming the challenges of modernity, such as dehumanization, moral crisis, and ethical relativism.
