Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between celebrity worship and self-concept among K-pop fan college students in Bandung by utilizing a mixed-methods approach, including case studies, quantitative surveys, and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that the attachment of K-pop fans to their idols affects their self-perception, influencing aspects from physical appearance to personal values. Results indicate that while celebrity worship exists at a moderate level, the impact of idols on young adult students fosters positive motivation and self-confidence, without leading to obsessive behavior. This research highlights that admiration for popular culture can contribute to identity formation and enhance self-concept.

Abstract

Counselors in the field get moderate to low ratings in terms of guidance and counseling services as a whole. Performance is considered not in accordance with the competencies that should be possessed. Before entering the world of work, prospective counselors need to prepare themselves by practicing non-technical skills. Non-technical skills have a bigger role than technical skills at work. The research uses a qualitative method, namely a literature review with multiple hermeneutic analysis. The non-technical skills of prospective counselors are divided into two general non-technical skills as a form of adaptation to entering the world of work and microcounseling, namely non-technical skills to optimize guidance and counseling services. Development of non-technical skills is carried out by integrating academic and non-academic. Recommendations for universities providing non-technical skills development services; prospective counselors recognize the need to develop non-technical skills; future researchers can examine techniques that are effective in teaching and training non-technical skills.

Abstract

Research indicates that adjustment to retirement is tough for Nigerian retirees, arising from employers’ neglect and workers’ laxity. The extent to which personal dispositions could influence adjustment to retirement is of interest to researchers, retirement counselors, and gerontologists. The study investigated both the individual and joint contributory influence of self-compassion, self-criticism/self-reassurance, and distress disclosure on retirement adjustment of retirees in Nigeria. The study adopted survey design. A sample of 181 retirees selected from two states, using multi-stage sampling. Data were collected using Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) developed by Neff (2003), Retirement Adjustment Scale (RAS) developed by Adeyemo and Olatomide (2017), Forms of Self-Criticism/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale (FSCRS) developed by Gilbert et al. (2004), and Distress Disclosure Index (DDI) developed by Kahn and Hessling (2001). The data were analysed, using simple regression and multiple regression analyses. Results showed that self-compassion 0.349, AdjR2 = 0.346, Beta = 0.591, t = 9.776, F value = 95.56, P value = 0.0000.05), and  self-criticism/self-reassurance 0.126, AdjR2 = 0.121, Beta = 0.355, t = 5.080, F value = 25.80, P value = 0.0000.05), produced significant individual contribution effect on retirement adjustment of the retirees, while distress disclosure  = 0.003, AdjR2 = 0.002, Beta = 0.058, t = 0.779, F value = 0.606, P value = 0.4370.05) has no significant individual contribution effect, among other findings. Retirement counsellors should underscore the significance of compassion toward oneself, underplaying personal and external errors, including readiness to intimate significant others with one’s distressful situations during interactions with prospective retirees and the retired, among other counselling implications.

Attachment is the first and most crucial relationship that children have with their caregivers (often the mother but not necessarily); the built relationship will last long enough and provide a sense of security even though the attachment figure is not visible in the child's view. Examined the impact of attachment and its effect on social skills. Consequently, this study systematically reviews evidence on attachment and social skills. A total of 35 articles published between 2001 and 2020 met the criteria after searching in the following databases: sage journal, springer link, thesis database, science direct, hazing, researchgate, Google, Google Scholar. Cambridge. The findings suggest a positive relationship between safe and unsafe attachment (anxiety and avoidance) and social skills. The findings show that safe attachment will provide self-confidence, responsiveness, shows that children's social competence can relate well to teachers and peers at school and in the community. The unsafe attachment will hurt the child. Children arenot confident and less good at responding to their environment or lack social skills.

The research approach used is quantitative with 10 question items and a 5-point Likert scale as an alternative answer. Analysis of reliability and validity using Rasch with the help of the Winstep application. The results of the study found that Cronbach's Alpha value was 0.43 which was in the weak category. Then, the results of the person reliability test have a value of 0.32 as an indicator of the consistency of respondents' answers, including in the weak category. From the results of the analysis, the item reliability value is 0.80 which is in the good category. Thus, the self-concept of adolescents living in orphanages can be measured using this instrument

Abstract

Public speaking skills are essential for postgraduate students, thus, many individuals still face challenges with anxiety when it comes to presenting their ideas or research findings in public settings. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between self-esteem and public speaking anxiety among postgraduate students at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 96 postgraduate students which were properly filled out of the 100 administered. The results revealed that 56.3% of the students experience low levels of public speaking anxiety, 29.2% moderate levels, and 14.6% high levels. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to analyze the relationship between self-esteem and public speaking anxiety. The findings indicated a weak negative correlation (r = -0.109) between the two variables, with a p-value of 0.290, which is greater than the significance level of 0.05. Consequently, the null hypothesis was not rejected, confirming that there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and public speaking anxiety among postgraduate students. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the university implement public speaking training workshops and provide counseling services to support students with high levels of public speaking anxiety.

Abstract

Correlation is one of the statistical methods used to measure the relationship between two variables. Two commonly used types of correlation are Spearman Correlation and Pearson Correlation. Spearman Correlation is used for ordinal data or data that do not meet the assumption of normality, while Pearson Correlation is applied to interval or ratio data that follow a normal distribution. This study aims to compare the results of analyses using these two correlation methods through the SPSS software. By analyzing both simulated and real-world data, tests were conducted on various data scenarios, including variations in data types, distribution patterns, and levels of variable relationships. The results indicate that Pearson Correlation is more sensitive to normally distributed data, whereas Spearman Correlation provides more stable results for non-normally distributed data or data containing outliers. This article also presents a step-by-step guide for using SPSS to perform analyses with both correlation methods, making it easier for readers, especially students and researchers, to apply the appropriate method based on their data characteristics. By understanding the differences and advantages of each method, users are expected to choose the right approach for correlation analysis.
