Abstract

Language borrows words from another language when cultural contact occurs. It can’t be denied that borrowing words can be found commonly anywhere, not to mention on the internet. This paper is entitled “English Borrowing Words in JagatPlay News Articles”, aimed to analyze the borrowed words used in the website with the focus of the meaning change. The data of this study is taken randomly from JagatPlay news articles, which is considered to be relevant to the study. The data then analyzed using the theory proposed by Bloomfield (1935), Hockett (1958), and mainly Baugh (1993). After that, it is presented by classifying the word by determining whether they underwent a change in meaning or not and the sociolinguistics aspect of the change. From the analysis, some borrowed words used in the article by its writer undergo a change in meaning, but also there are some words that stick with the original meaning, and may even stick with the spelling. Words like implisit, eksistensi, fenomenal, sporadis era, spiritual, veteran don’t undergo meaning change. Meanwhile, words like ikon, visual, legendaris, konsol, objektif, and drama are considered to be words that have undergone some change in the meaning, typically degeneration. All the same, it can’t be denied that the usage of borrowing words in media, in this case in a news website, is relatively used often.

Abstract

Face-threatening Acts or FTAs are an interesting phenomenon within the linguistic branch of Pragmatics to study and investigate. It involves not only acts that threaten interlocutors but also strategies for doing these acts. Subsequently, this study focused on the FTAs phenomenon, specifically occurred in the movie, Darkest Hour, a movie revolving around Winston Churchill’s reign as the UK’s Prime Minister. This study aimed to find out FTAs performed by the characters and how the characters attempt to either reduce it or not. Consequently, the data were obtained from the movie, Darkest Hour. This study used Qualitative and Descriptive methods to analyze the FTAs phenomenon in line with Brown and Levinson’s (1987) initiated theory. This study would attempt to identify what FTAs occur in the movie and determine what strategy is being used at the same time. Ultimately, this study found cases of FTA towards the hearer’s positive face (i.e., complaints, criticism, reprimands, non-cooperation, insult, expression of violent emotion, raising dangerously emotional topics, accusation, disapproval, disagreement, irreverence.) more frequent than the negative counterpart (i.e., order, suggestion, advice, warning, request, threat, anger, and reminder). In addition, the characters tend to perform those FTAs directly and without minimization. Based on those findings, the FTA phenomenon in this movie might occurred due to the character’s persistence in holding and imposing their virtues on others.

Abstract

Taboo words are the primary notion in this study. There are two objectives of this study, which are to classify the types of taboo words in the show and categorize their functions. The analysis was conducted based on the theories proposed by Battistela (2005) and Wardaugh (2005). Battistela (2005) differentiated taboo words into 4 categories; Epithets, Profanity, Vulgarity, and Obscenity. Wardaugh (2006) formulated the function of taboo words into four types: to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be aggressive or provocative, and to mock authority The analyzed data taken from a comedy show Dave Chappelle’s The Closer Stand-up Comedy. The collected data is analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative method since it did not involve any numerical data. Through the analysis, the use of taboo terms in a speech is revealed; it helps the speaker deliver his points despite its rude and barbaric connotations. The comedy performance that mostly criticizes racial and LGBTQ+ phenomenon in America stimulates the speaker to use epithets as a tool for labeling the community member and making jokes. Through this comical performance, it can be concluded that taboo words can convey satire and critics to the current society, which the speaker considered as judgemental yet biased and unmerciful towards comedians. For this reason, it can be concluded that the use of taboo terms in a speech can help the speaker deliver his points despite their rude and barbaric connotations.

Abstract

It is said that men and women communicate differently, attaching different meanings to the same words. Men speak in concrete words to convey information, while women use artistic license and dramatic vocabulary to express and convey their feelings. Therefore, this research aims to (1) identify men's and women’s language features used by the characters in the Do Revenge movie and (2) examine the factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women. This research applied the theory from Lakoff (1975) about women’s language features and factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women, and Coates (2013) about men’s language. The data source is taken from a movie entitled Do Revenge (2022) directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The researcher got the data from the dialogue of males and females characters. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data in this study. The technique of data analysis is the descriptive method. The findings show that female characters showed 9 out of 10 women’s language features in total 175. They were lexical hedges or fillers, avoidance of strong swear words, empty adjectives, intensifiers, tag questions, rising intonation on declarative, hypercorrect grammar, emphatic stress, and super polite forms. On the other side, male characters showed 4 out of 5 men’s language features in total 37. They were minimal responses, the use of swearing and taboo language, commands and directives, and question. The researcher also found that psychology and social status are factors that affect the differences in the language of women and men in the Do Revenge movie.

Abstract

This study was focused on an analysis of code-switching used by Maudy Ayunda found in the youtube video Catatan Najwa bersama Maudy Ayunda, which was hosted by Najwa Shihab. This study aimed to identify the types of code-switching and to know the reason for using code-switching by Maudy Ayunda. This research was classified as qualitative research with a descriptive method. The data of this study were collected by watching the video on Najwa Shihab's youtube channel and then analyzed descriptively. The theory used to analyze the types of code-switching is the code-switching theory by Hoffman (1991). According to Hoffman (1991), there are four types of code-switching: intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, emblematic and establishing continuity. The code-switching theory by Hoffman (1991) was also used to describe the reason for using code-switching. Hoffman (1991: 116) classified the reasons to use code-switching into seven points, namely, talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor and expressing group identity. As a result, in the conversation duration of 26 minutes, it was found that Maudy used the most inter-sentential switching, and the reason was talking about a particular topic.
