Abstract

Psychoanalytic criticism employs Freud's and following theorists' "reading" techniques to interpret texts. It is argued that literary texts, like dreams, reveal the author's unconscious desires and worries; a literary work is an expression of the author's neuroses. It is possible to psychoanalyze a specific literary character, however it is generally accepted that all such characters are reflections of the author's personality. A remarkable characteristic of this method is that it affirms the significance of literature by utilizing a literary key for decoding. Freud himself penned, "The dream-thoughts that we first encounter in the course of our analysis often blow us by the unusual form in which they are expressed; they are not clothed in the prosaic language typically employed by our thoughts, but are instead represented symbolically through similes and metaphors, in images resembling poetic speech". This analytical attempt, like psychoanalysis itself, seeks evidence of unresolved emotions, psychological conflicts, guilts, ambivalences, etc. within a potentially disjointed literary work. The author's personal childhood traumas, family life, sexual difficulties, and fixations will be reflected in the conduct of the literary work's characters. Yet psychological material will be expressed indirectly, disguised, or encoded (as in dreams) via concepts such as "symbolism" (the repressed object represented in disguise), "condensation" (many thoughts or individuals depicted in a single image), and "displacement" (anxiety located onto another image by means of association). Many artists expressed their thoughts, anxiety, and buried dreams through song lyrics. One of which is Billy Joel with his song Vienna. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data in this study. The lyrics of Vienna’s song are analyzed utilizing psychoanalytic literary criticism theory as the guidelines. The findings show that this song contains many elements of psychoanalytic through the metaphors that Billy Joel used in the lyrics.

Abstract

Nowadays, the use of profanity is becoming more widespread, and it seems to be particularly common among teenagers. However, swear words do not have a fixed, universal meaning, as their usage is context-dependent and pragmatic. A single swear word can have multiple meanings and functions depending on the situation. This study aims analyze the pragmatic purposes behind their usage, based on the themes proposed by Ljung in 2011. The research adopts a qualitative content analysis method since the data comprises the characters' spoken words in the movie. The data collection process involves gathering relevant information about swear words, and once sufficient material is obtained, the movie is rented from YouTube. The data analysis steps involve data reduction, data displaying, and finally drawing conclusion. The findings reveal that the functions of the swear words, replacive swearing emerges as the most frequently used function among the characters, followed by name-calling, and the third are expletive interjection, and emphasis with the same occurrence frequency, anaphoric use of epithet, adjectives of dislike, and the last are unfriendly suggestions, as well as adverbial/adjectival intensifiers which share the same occurrence frequency. The results indicate that swear words are heavily used in the Suicide Squad movie. This research provides a rich theoretical and empirical framework for future research, especially concerning the study of swear words.

The results demonstrated that students had a variety of challenges when it came to learning vocabulary. Grammar is the main factor, but students also have trouble learning vocabulary because of pronunciation and meaning. Additionally, there are external and internal factors that affect how well students learn vocabulary. The internal components included development, IQ, experience, drive, and memory. The usage of learning media, school facilities, family, and a variety of teaching methods were the external factors. The solutions to these problems are to read a lot of English vocabulary, practice learning vocabulary through exercises, and cultivate enthusiasm and motivation for learning vocabulary.

Abstract

This study analyzes defense mechanism undergone by Hughie Warriner in Dead Calm. Warriner conducts defense mechanism because he wants to reduce his anxiety after accidental incident of sinking a yacht and the killing of his friend. His action of doing defense mechanism is psychologically explainable that is also undergone by people in real life which then becomes the reason the researchers get interested in analyzing defense mechanism. Besides, this kind of mechanisms are close in human life that man is born with anxiety through which he conducts defense mechanisms unconsciously. Using three types of anxiety by Sigmund Freud, the study shows that Warriner conducts defense mechanisms: denial, displacement, and sublimation. By denial, he denies sinking the yacht and killing his friend, by displacement, he blames other object by shouting at it, and by sublimation, he puts the investigators under the yacht. Thus, the three types of defense mechanism are worthy of research since people can reduce their anxiety properly. By this study then, the researchers hope so much that it contributes to the development of the literary study especially in the study of psychology of literature.

This study focused on the politeness strategy used by an English teacher in the “Kelas Full Day Sains dan Bahasa Program” at MTs Mathalibul Huda. It aims to analyze the types of politeness strategy and the dominant strategy in classroom interaction. The method of this study was a qualitative descriptive approach. Brown and Levinson's (1978) theory was chosen to analyze the types of politeness strategies. The data collection techniques were observing, recording, transcribing, checking the transcription and selecting the speaker's utterances. Analysis involved identifying utterances based on the politeness strategies used, analyzing frequency, interpreting data, and concluding. There were four types of politeness strategies: blunt politeness, positive politeness, negative politeness, and confidential politeness. The result of four meetings revealed that 42 out of 103 daters had a politeness strategy of 41% classified as “overt politeness,” 39 out of 103 daters had a positive politeness rate of 38%, and 16 out of 103 daters had a negative politeness strategy of 15% and 6 of 103 data were categorized as off-record of 6%. Therefore, the predominant type of politeness strategy used by English teachers in teaching and learning is direct openness. This indicates that the teacher valued concise directness.
