Abstract

Adolescents experience rapid growth and development and are a critical period for changes in health-related behaviours such as food choices and physical activity. The prevalence of obesity increased from 1.4% in 2016 to 7.3% in 2017. Nutrition education will be effective if supported by the right media and delivery methods, one of which is android-based media as a tool for nutrition education in children. The advantage of nutrition education with quiz game media is its ability to convey information and increase adolescent knowledge through interesting media. This study aims to determine the effect of nutrition education through quiz game application media (APKIS) on knowledge and consumption of adolescent snacks at MTs Negeri 2 Pontianak. This research is a quasi-experiment with a one group pretest and posttest design, conducted on 22 June-1 July 2022. A sample of 39 respondents was taken by simple random sampling. Variables of knowledge and consumption of snacks were analysed using paired t-test. The results showed a significant effect on knowledge before and after nutrition education (p-value 0.00 < 0.05), and there was an effect on the consumption of snacks before and after education (p-value 0.00 < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of quiz application game media (APKIS) has an effect on increasing knowledge and changes in snack food consumption.

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a pathological condition that is irreversible and has various underlying causes. The diagnosis is based on structural or functional abnormalities of the kidneys, with the primary criterion being a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m² for more than three months. Common symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, and muscle cramps. Management of CKD consists of two stages: conservative treatment aimed at slowing disease progression and renal replacement therapy, such as dialysis or kidney transplantation. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and Hematocrit (Hct) tests are important for detecting decreased erythropoietin production, which impacts red blood cell formation. The objective of this study was to examine the differences in ESR and Hct values in patients with chronic kidney disease before and after undergoing hemodialysis. The study employed a pre-experimental design using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest approach, involving a single experimental group without a control group. Measurements were taken both before and after the intervention. The results from 10 CKD patients at Tabanan Regional Public Hospital indicated that all respondents (100%) had elevated ESR levels both before and after hemodialysis. In contrast, Hct values decreased following hemodialysis, which is likely due to reduced erythropoietin production associated with CKD, leading to anemia. In conclusion, no significant difference was observed in ESR values before and after hemodialysis. However, there was a notable difference in Hct values, which declined after the procedure.

Abstract

Background: The diagnosis of Dengue Fever (DF) involves physical examination, laboratory tests, and confirmation primarily through thrombocytopenia and leukocyte abnormalities. Laboratory procedures play a crucial role; however, delays in complete blood count (CBC) analysis may influence hematological parameters, potentially affecting diagnostic accuracy. Objective: To determine the effect of 2-hour and 4-hour delays in CBC testing on leukocyte and platelet counts in patients with Dengue Fever. Methods: This experimental study used a posttest-only control group design with purposive sampling. Blood samples from DF patients were divided into three groups: immediate testing, 2-hour delay, and 4-hour delay. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test followed by Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). Results: The mean leukocyte and platelet counts in the immediate testing group were 4.86×10³/μL and 61.55×10³/μL, respectively. In the 2-hour delay group, leukocyte counts slightly decreased to 4.79×10³/μL and platelet counts increased to 65.77×10³/μL. In the 4-hour delay group, leukocyte counts increased to 4.85×10³/μL while platelet counts decreased to 64×10³/μL. MANOVA results (Sig. = 1.000) indicated no significant differences among the groups. Conclusion: Delays of 2 and 4 hours in CBC testing did not significantly affect leukocyte and platelet counts in Dengue Fever patients. These findings suggest that short-term delays in sample analysis may not compromise hematological results in DF diagnosis.

Abstract

Lawar plek is a traditional Balinese dish made from raw meat, which poses a potential risk of contamination by pathogenic bacteria, including Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). This study aimed to identify the presence of ETEC in lawar plek samples from Ketewel Village, Gianyar. This research uses molecular methods. The identification was conducted in two stages: initial isolation of suspected bacteria on Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (EMBA), followed by molecular confirmation using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The study results show that in EMBA culture, 4 out of 12 samples (33.33%) showed colonies presumptively identified as E. coli. However, PCR analysis revealed that none of these isolates carried the LT (heat-labile toxin) or ST (heat-stable toxin) genes characteristic of ETEC. The conclusion shows that neither the LT (heat-labile toxin) nor the ST (heat-stable toxin) virulence genes of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli were found in any of the samples tested as suspected Escherichia coli colonies on EMBA.

Abstract

School-aged children are generally in a period of rapid growth and high activity, making nutrition a crucial factor in their physical development and cognitive intelligence. Inadequate nutrition can hinder physical growth, mental development, and thinking ability. Nutritional intake can be obtained from daily food consumption, including snacks. Snacks are widely favored across all age groups, from children to adults, and are typically provided in small portions, contributing around 10%–20% of daily energy needs. One popular and easy-to-make snack for children is cookies. This study aims to analyze the nutritional content and acceptability of cookies made from Pontianak taro flour (Colocasia esculenta L. Schott) with the addition of Kepok banana flour (Musa paradisiaca forma typica) as a snack for school children. The research method used is experimental. The treatments applied were variations in taro and banana flour proportions: F1 (75% : 25%), F2 (50% : 50%), and F3 (25% : 75%). The tests conducted included organoleptic tests to assess consumer preference and chemical analysis to determine nutrient content. The organoleptic test results—covering color, aroma, taste, and texture—showed that the F3 formulation (25% Kepok banana flour and 75% Pontianak taro flour) received the highest total score of 236. The chemical analysis per 100 grams of the F3 formulation showed protein content of 5.535%, fat 28.214%, carbohydrates 10.635%, ash content 1.451%, and moisture content 4.470%. In conclusion, among the three formulations, F3 was the most preferred in terms of acceptability, with favorable nutrient content suitable for a school children's snack.

Abstract

Stunting, or short stature, is a condition in which a person's height is not appropriate for their age. Adequate intake of both macronutrients and micronutrients is essential to prevent or reduce the risk of stunting. In addition to calcium-rich foods, the inclusion of prebiotic-containing foods is highly recommended. To ensure the intake of both calcium and prebiotics, a food formula composed of chicken feet bones, bananas, and garlic—referred to as a calcium-prebiotic food formula—was developed. The composition of the formula was based on the CODEX STAN 181-1991 standard, with an energy content of approximately 200–400 kcal to support weight management. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability of the calcium-prebiotic food formula made from chicken feet, garlic, and bananas for children with stunting. This study used an experimental design consisting of three formulations: F1 (75%:25%), F2 (50%:50%), and F3 (25%:75%). Organoleptic tests were conducted using a panel to assess acceptability in terms of color, aroma, texture, and taste. The Friedman statistical test showed no significant differences among the three formulations in terms of color, aroma, texture, and taste. It is recommended that further laboratory testing be conducted to determine the protein and calcium content for more accurate nutritional profiling.
