Abstract

This research was designed to explore the effects of extrinsic and intrinsic factors on violence. A structural equation model (SEM) was applied for analyzing more comprehensive and integrative determinant factors of violence, which involved 589 subjects (280 male and 309 female) of public school students in South Sulawesi. Extrinsic factors included violence experience, parenting, and parent education, while intrinsic factors included students’ temperament and self-concept. The research found that there was a positive correlation between violence’ experience with violence, and between authoritarian and permissive parenting with violence. There was a significant negative correlation between authoritative parenting with violence, between temperament with violence, and between self-concept and violence. There was significant difference of violence behavior between male and female student. The male student is higher than female student.

Abstract

Developing an Individualized Learning Module to Improve the Quality of Learning Processes and Outcomes. The study was intended to develop an effective learning module, which is based on procedural-content-learning principles, for a course on material knowledge. The module was expected to improve the quality of learning processes and outcomes. Equipped with other components such as manual, material diagram, specific learning objectives, contents, pictures, exercises, and summaries, the module becomes easy to learn and understand. The research findings suggest that the module provides contribution to the learning outcomes when applied in procedural-content learning.

Abstract

The aim of this classroom action research is to improve the quality of fine arts subject and students' creativity through the use of graphical reproduction media design. The study involved 88 second graders of a junior high school and one fine-art teacher teaching those students. Data were collected through observation, field notes, documentation, interview, and recordings of program implementation. The results show that the use of graphical reproduction media design could enhance teaching learning quality and develop students' creativity, which in turn is expected to build up students' independence needed for their future life.

Abstract

The Communication Education Curriculum and The Challenges of Informational Technology. Communication education has recently attracted high school graduates in Indonesia. There is a challenge of how communication education fulfills their needs and the employment market in general. Based on the case, this article suggests modification of communication curriculum to adjust educational system since Indonesia adopt two higher education levels, undergraduate and graduate. The curriculum of undergraduate focuses on practical and basic courses, while the graduate focuses on theory, philosophy and problem analysis. On relationship with the curriculum modification, the communication education institution must provide communication laboratory to support teaching and learning process suited to the development of information technology.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe social interaction in the parenting pattern in the Punjab community as the manifestation of their personality. This qualitative study covered the Punjab families in the Medan city. The data were collected through participant observation and open-and-close structured questionnaire, and in-depth interview. The data were also enriched by examining the archive on Punjab's personality and parenting pattern. The data collected were analyzed by the qualitative descriptive technique. The results showed that the parenting amongst Punjab community was to shape children's personality to be responsible individuals who remained holding both traditional and religious values firmly.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ketersediaan media belajar dan intensitas pemanfaatannya dalam pengajaran Kerajinan Tangan menurut Kurikulum 1994 di SD. Sampel diambil secara rambang sebanyak 19 kepala sekolah dan 40 guru kelas I dan IV dari 20 SD Negeri di Kecamatan Karangploso Malang. Data dikumpulkan dengan angket dan wawancara. Analisis dilakukan dengan statistik persentase. Ditemukan bahwa media belajar kerajinan relatif tersedia cukup memadai menurut kebutuhan dan jenisnya, kecuali buku sumber kerajinan dan model kerajinan, dan bahwa sebagian besar jenis alat kerja dan bahan kerajinan telah dimanfaatkan secara efektif meskipun intensitasnya bervariasi.

Abstract

This correlative study aimed at investigating the correlation between physical education grade, motivation in choosing not-test study program, and the result of physical fitness test altogether with the result of sport skill test. Using purposive sampling technique, thirty three students taken from the students of Physical Education, Health and Recreation Study Program of UM were used as samples of this study. Data were collected using documentation and questionnaire, and were analyzed by using correlation and regression technique.

Abstract

Policy Assessment of Governmental Subsidies to Higher Education (1991-1996). Higher education is an important sector in preparing human resources as the actors of national development. Private universities have significant contributions to the sector, but state universities take the governmental subsidies more than private universities. The subsidies cause the state universities to be dependent. The government has to motivate the state universities to privatize their business. It should minimize its subsidies to the state universities and allocate the subsidies to other sectors, and should implement progressive ‘taxes’ for state students. On the other hand, the state universities have to improve their abilities to compete with the private universities as their competitors.

Abstract

This research examined both the students’ understanding of mathematical problems and their difficulties in solving the problems based on the SOLO taxonomy. The Collis-Romberg test of mathematical problem solving consisting of five items, each having four questions, was administered to 582 first-year students from 15 classes of public senior high schools in Jember. The results indicated that 8.82%, 7.73%, 33.30%, 34.67%, and 16.01% of the students were respectively at prestructural, unistructural, multistructural, relational, and extended abstract levels. The students’ difficulties were identified as follows: they did not understand the stems; they did not understand the questions; and they did not understand the concepts of digit and number, double proportion, and locus of points.

Abstract

The Effectiveness of Semantic-Mapping Model in Vocabulary Learning at Elementary School. The study aimed to find out whether semantic-mapping model was an effective learning model in learning vocabulary at elementary school. A quasi experimental design was employed, involving experimental and control groups. The data in the form of scores of pretest and posttest of the two groups were analyzed using t-test. The results indicate that the proposed model is more effective than the traditional one in vocabulary learning.
