Abstract

This study is aimed to assess the efficacy of employing local storytelling to enhance the speaking skills of grade XII students in an English language classroom, involving 18 participants from a Pivate School in Medan. Utilizing the action research method, the study implemented two intervention cycles centered on local stories, namely "The Legend of Malin Kundang" and "The Origin of Lake Toba." Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to evaluate fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Surprisingly, results indicated a decline in speaking scores across both cycles, falling short of the target score of 75. Despite attempts to engage students through storytelling, challenges like insufficient participation, attention, and confidence impeded the intervention's effectiveness. This highlights the need for supplementary strategies beyond storytelling to enhance speaking skills effectively. The findings contrast with prior research advocating for storytelling's efficacy in improving speaking skills, necessitating the exploration of alternative approaches such as interviews and group discussions. Acknowledging limitations, the study underscores the necessity for broader, more diverse research samples to generalize findings across educational contexts.

Abstract

Referring to several evaluation results of the 2013 Curriculum, the learning load is too large, it limits schools in designing education according to school conditions, and the existence of a reading system still causes students to have a fixed mindset. The government's response was to implement the Merdeka Curriculum through an elective subject selection program. This research aims to describe the implementation of the elective subject selection program. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection techniques through interviews. The research subjects were three guidance counseling teachers from SMA Negeri 19 Bandung. The results show that the elective subject selection program has been implemented at SMA Negeri 19 Bandung, as evidenced by the program scheme created by the school with the elective subject selection program guide issued by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The activities carried out by the school are quite diverse,  collaborating with internal schools but also external parties to implement this program a success. However, schools still have to face challenges such as the need to continue to carry out updates with each new generation by adjusting the condition of school infrastructure and the availability of teaching teachers so that the spirit of the elective subject selection program continues to be created, namely creating independence for each student. It is hoped that the research results obtained will be able to become a reference for other schools in preparing and implementing elective subject selection program schemes that suit the conditions of their respective schools.

Abstract

Homeschooling is an educational option for children outside the school system that is practiced in various countries. In Indonesia, there is a trend towards an increasing number of homeschoolers. Homeschoolers value the flexibility in structure and content that homeschooling provides, which is not usually available in traditional schools. in traditional schools. One of the main challenges in formulating policies for implementing home schools is harmonizing the principles of flexibility and accountability. This research uses a mixed methods approach to obtain comprehensive data and provide a complete understanding. The harmonization of the Draft Regulations on the Implementation of Home Schools revealed that the state's interests in promoting home school accountability can be balanced with the interests of parents who desire flexibility. This allows for the proper fulfillment of the rights of homeschooled children. The results of the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the draft regulations for implementing home schools, conducted in Yogyakarta, Medan, and Balikpapan on November 9-11, 2022, showed that respondents were concerned about the principles of flexibility and accountability. Four issues were identified: homeschooling registration, scope of homeschooling material, recognition of past learning, and changing track.

Abstract

A communication tool and information source in education, including the utilization of learning media, necessitates careful consideration from teachers in selecting appropriate media to enhance student motivation in learning, aiming for benefits such as: 1) enhancing the appeal of the educational process, 2) optimizing efficiency and effectiveness in learning, and 3) conserving energy and time. In the realm of Islamic Religious Education and Character lessons, particularly focusing on the concept of Believing in Allah's Books, students commonly encounter challenges in grasping this knowledge. The difficulties faced by students in comprehending Islamic Religious Education and Character lessons concerning Believing in Allah's Books stem from various factors, as revealed through surveys and observations conducted at SMPN 2 Dempet Demak. Among these challenges is the struggle to grasp the core essence of the material as presented in textbooks and slide presentations. Additionally, the conventional teaching approach employed by educators contributes significantly to diminishing students' enthusiasm and motivation for learning. The evolving landscape of media usage presents a challenge for teachers in fulfilling their roles effectively to meet educational objectives. The widespread availability and accessibility of smartphones as a learning tool can profoundly impact students' learning experiences. Apart from being relatively novel facilities, students are more inclined to engage with tools that are current and resonate with their everyday experiences.
