Abstract

Abstract

One of the phenomena in wearing traditional South Mollo clothes is the Pilu pattern (head cover) for Usif (king) who resembles a deer, containing the philosophy of “Lus tae Nonoa on the head” a symbol of glory, power, and might. The Timor deer (Cervus Timorensis) is an endemic animal typical of TTS Regency, which is now almost extinct. One of the causes of the criticism of the Timor deer ecosystem is the reduction in the original habitat of the Timor deer, namely in the hills and mountains that have become residential areas and tourist attractions. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a common thread between the extinction of several endemic animals that represent local wisdom of human relations with nature in South Mollo traditional clothes and the reduced use of lexicon of South Mollo traditional clothes in everyday life. This phenomenon serves as the foundation for examining the lexicons of elements and components forming South Mollo traditional dress, along with their philosophical meanings. This study applied a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, gathering data through in-depth interviews and field observations. The results identified 27 lexicon[JW1]  on the traditional clothes of South Mollo and there are 10 meanings contained in the traditional clothes of South Molo, namely friendship and brotherhood maun uaf (betel fruit), maun of (betel leaf), and puah (betel nut), and los (betel leaf). chalk)); power (besimnasi/crocodile), might (besimnasi/crocodile), strength (lus/deer), simplicity (lus/deer), honesty (monk/gecko), consistency (pah/earth), life (pah/ground, oel/ water), warmth (heat/sun), and protection and dignity, (beti/blanket and tais/sarong

Abstract

This research is situated within the field of early childhood education (ECE), focusing on the exploration of teachers’ growth mindset and its impact on children’s learning behavior. The article aims to describe how growth mindset is formed and understood by ECE teachers, and how such an approach influences children's motivation and learning independence. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method involving 29 ECE teachers in Manggarai Regency, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires, documentation, and interviews, then analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that ECE teachers demonstrate a strong tendency toward a growth mindset, despite the lack of sufficient training in stress management or psychological well-being. Teachers remain committed to continuous learning and to creating learning environments that support children's exploration. This mindset-based approach positively impacts children's behavior, including increased independence, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning. The study contributes significantly to the body of literature on psychosocial approaches in ECE, particularly in under-researched local contexts. These findings highlight the need for systemic support for teachers' well-being and capacity building as key agents in early childhood education transformation..

Abstract

This study examines the structural organization, functions, and meanings of Toes Eka Ho’e, a form of oral literature practiced by the Sallu community in West Miomaffo, Timor. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology grounded in structural analysis, the study draws on data collected from ritual utterances performed by customary informants. The analytical procedures involved transcription, identification of structural components, and interpretive analysis of functions and meanings based on the internal relations among textual elements. The findings reveal that Toes Eka Ho’e is constituted by six principal structural components: diction, lines, stanzas, figurative language, layers of meaning, and functions. Structurally, the text comprises eight stanzas, each consisting of three to six lines, with syllabic variation ranging from six to eighteen syllables per line. The dominant rhetorical devices include personification, paradox, repetition, pleonasm, euphemism, and hyperbole. The semantic dimension encompasses both symbolic and figurative meanings. Functionally, Toes Eka Ho’e fulfills religious, mythological, and social roles within the community. This study contributes to the advancement of scholarship on Indonesian oral literature and supports ongoing efforts to document and preserve the cultural heritage and local wisdom of the Atoni Pah Meto people.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to explore and describe the profile of elementary students' mathematical connection skills in solving numeracy literacy problems contextualized in local wisdom. Conducted from November 2024 to June 2025 at Inpres Mawe Elementary School, Manggarai Timur, the research involved selected fifth-grade students categorized into high, moderate, and low proficiency groups using purposive sampling. Data were collected through written tests and in depth interviews. The written test was designed to assess students’ ability to connect mathematical concepts within real-life and cultural contexts, while interviews were used to further investigate students’ reasoning and understanding. Data validity was ensured through methodological triangulation, comparing written responses with interview results. The data analysis process followed the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal notable differences in students' abilities: students with high mathematical connection ability demonstrated good ability to identify, connect, and apply various mathematical concepts in the context of local culture. However, procedural errors were still found in the final calculation stage of problem solving; those at the moderate level showed partial understanding; and low-performing students struggled to relate mathematical concepts to practical or cultural settings. The results underscore the significance of integrating local wisdom into mathematics education to enhance students’ conceptual understanding and numeracy skills. The study recommends instructional approaches that emphasize holistic thinking and the use of diverse representations to strengthen students’ mathematical connections.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of misuh, a form of course or profane language, in public advertisements across Surabaya, analyzing it as both a linguistic and social phenomenon that reflects broader cultural transformations in an urbanizing society. Historically functioning as an expression of intimacy, assertiveness, and informal social control, misuh has undergone shifts in function and spatial presence alongside increasing demographic diversity and the modernization of urban governance. Using qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and field observations, this research explores residents' perceptions of written misuh, its perceived effectiveness, and the factors contributing to its persistence or decline. Findings indicate that while misuh remains present, its occurrence has diminished and is now largely confined to more localized areas or neighbourhoods with higher levels of public non-compliance. This decline is shaped by three major factors: growing cultural pluralism that demands more inclusive communication, emerging language ideologies that frame misusing as impolite or inappropriate, and the strengthening of formal institutional mechanisms for regulating public space through signage, CCTV, and reporting systems. The study also identifies a migration of misuh to new mediums, particularly truck bodies, which serve as mobile spaces for expressing identity, humour, social critique, and religiosity. Overall, the findings suggest that misuh has not disappeared but has undergone symbolic and functional transformation, reflecting ongoing negotiations of identity, shifts in power structures, and evolving social values ??in an increasingly modern and multicultural Surabaya.

Abstract

This study reports the development of VOCAyo, a digital vocabulary learning application designed for EFL learners in Takengon, Central Aceh, with a specific focus on tourism contexts. Using the Dick and Carey instructional design model, the research followed six systematic phases: needs assessment, instructional analysis, learner and context analysis, formulation of objectives, development of assessment instruments, and prototype design. Data were collected from 120 students, 12 teachers, and 9 tourism practitioners through questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, curriculum reviews, and document analyses. Findings revealed a persistent gap between English instruction and the communicative demands of the tourism sector. Students and teachers highlighted the lack of contextualized vocabulary, while practitioners identified recurring situations requiring descriptive, hospitality, and transactional language. Despite these gaps, learners demonstrated strong motivation, high smartphone ownership, and readiness for digital learning. VOCAyo was therefore designed as a mobile-friendly, offline-capable app integrating tourism-based vocabulary, interactive tasks, and embedded assessments that ensure objectivity, usability, and fairness. The study contributes to mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) by embedding localized, socio-economic content into digital tools, bridging the divide between classroom instruction and real-world tourism communication.

Abstract

Inequalities in access to education in Indonesia’s island regions are influenced not only by economic and social factors but also by limited geographical mobility. This study aims to analyze how the dependence of students from island regions on maritime transportation specifically Pelni ships affects their access to higher education. The study employs a qualitative approach using phenomenological methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 25 students from island regions in Eastern Indonesia who are pursuing higher education in Makassar. The findings indicate that Pelni ships serve as educational infrastructure enabling academic mobility for students from remote areas to higher education centers. However, limited sailing schedules, long travel durations, and high mobility costs create a distinct form of educational inequality in island regions. On the other hand, travel via Pelni ships also serves as a space for the formation of social capital through student interactions and migrant networks. This study introduces the concept of maritime educational inequality as a form of educational disparity arising from differences in access to maritime transportation infrastructure. These findings expand the field of the sociology of education by positioning geographical mobility as a key factor in the reproduction of educational inequality.
