Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, Indonesia ranks third highest in the world in the number of active smokers, with 3.5 million women and 58 million men (WHO, 2022). One region in South Sulawesi Province with active smokers aged 15 years is Makassar City, where 16.58% of adolescents were reported to smoke in 2022 (BPS, 2022). Adolescence is the stage of human development after childhood in which physical, mental, and emotional changes occur. Some adolescents often find it difficult to cope with these changes, so guidance from more mature individuals is needed to protect them from harm (Heng, 2020). This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of health promotion in improving smoking-danger-awareness behavior among junior high school students. This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design to determine the effectiveness of lecture media and teaching aids about the health dangers of smoking on students' knowledge, attitudes, and actions. The population of this study consisted of 256 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Makassar (Ministry of Education, 2023). The sample size was 52 students, selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results of the Wilcoxon test analysis obtained a significance value of 0.000 for knowledge, attitudes, and actions, with a p-value < 0.05, from which it can be concluded that lecture media and teaching aids are effective in improving smoking-danger-awareness behavior among junior high school students at SMP Negeri 9 Makassar. It is recommended that institutions make use of instructional media to disseminate health information on the dangers of smoking to students.

Abstract

Food safety is an essential aspect of public health because contaminated food may cause foodborne diseases. The novelty of this study lies in evaluating the implementation of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system in a local food service establishment using direct observation based on the seven HACCP principles. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of the HACCP system at Dan's Ayam Geprek Restaurant in Gowa Regency. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through direct observation and interviews with food handlers. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by identifying potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards and determining Critical Control Points (CCPs). The findings showed that the restaurant had implemented most basic food safety practices, including the provision of clean water, adequate sanitation facilities, proper storage of raw materials and cooked food, and hygienic food serving procedures. However, several shortcomings were identified, including the incomplete use of personal protective equipment by food handlers and the storage of chili sauce in uncovered containers, which may increase the risk of contamination. Three Critical Control Points (CCPs) were identified, namely food processing, frying and cooked food storage, and food serving and packaging. Overall, the implementation of HACCP at Dan's Ayam Geprek Restaurant meets most food safety requirements, although improvements in personal hygiene, food storage management, and continuous monitoring are still required to enhance food safety.

Abstract

Encountering mechanical vibration represents a notable physical occupational risk that can lead to work-related health issues, including occupational fatigue, especially in jobs that require the repetitive operation of vibrating equipment, such as tailoring in the informal sector. This research sought to investigate the correlation between hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure and work-related fatigue among informal-sector tailors in Makassar City. A quantitative, cross-sectional methodology was utilized, incorporating 30 participants chosen via simple random selection. Vibration exposure was quantified in m/s² using the ISO 5349-1:2001 standard, whereas occupational tiredness was evaluated via the tiredness Feeling Measurement Tool Questionnaire (KAUPK2). Bivariate data examination was performed via Fisher's Exact test. A significant portion of participants experienced minimal vibration exposure and indicated modest degrees of work-related weariness. Statistical examination indicated no significant correlation between hand-arm vibration exposure and work-related weariness (p>0.05). The results indicate that minimal vibration exposure might not be adequate to substantially provoke occupational tiredness in the studied group. The lack of a statistically significant correlation suggests that alternative factors might have a more considerable influence on the emergence of work-related weariness among tailors, especially considering the minimal vibration exposure noted in this environment. Additional investigation utilizing a longitudinal framework and an expanded sample population is advised to thoroughly assess the impact of vibration exposure and ergonomic elements on work-related weariness.

Abstract

Obesity among adolescents is an increasing public health problem that contributes to the risk of various non-communicable diseases. Schools provide a strategic setting for health promotion to improve students' knowledge and encourage healthy lifestyles. This community service aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an obesity education program by assessing students' knowledge six months after the intervention. The program involved 51 students of SMP Negeri 2 Parangloe selected through total sampling. A quantitative evaluative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest and follow-up evaluation design was applied. Data were collected using knowledge and behavioral questionnaires and analyzed using univariate analysis and the Friedman test. The results showed a significant improvement in students' knowledge (p=0.000), with the median score increasing from 3 at pre-test to 6 at post-test I and reaching 7 at the six-month follow-up. Furthermore, 75.0% of students reported engaging in regular physical activity, while 80.4% reduced their consumption of high-fat and high-sugar foods. These findings indicate that school-based obesity education is effective in improving and maintaining students' knowledge while encouraging healthier lifestyle behaviors for obesity prevention

Abstract

Population growth and increasing household activities have led to a continuous rise in waste generation, while community capacity to implement sustainable waste management practices is still limited. This condition was also identified in Sunggumanai Hamlet, Parangloe District, Gowa Regency, where low public awareness of waste segregation, limited waste management facilities, and the common practice of open waste burning were the main issues. This community service program aimed to improve community knowledge and participation in sustainable waste management through education, mentoring, and the implementation of Infiltration Biopore Holes (Lubang Resapan Biopori/LRB) as a simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly technology for organic waste management. The methods employed included the preparation stage, development of educational materials, community counseling, hands-on biopore construction training, and continuous assistance throughout the implementation process. The results indicated that the program successfully increased community understanding of waste segregation, encouraged the utilization of organic waste as compost through biopore technology, and enhanced community participation in maintaining environmental cleanliness. Furthermore, the innovation of using bamboo as a biopore casing provided a cost-effective alternative by utilizing locally available resources. Overall, the program contributed to reducing organic waste accumulation, improving rainwater infiltration, minimizing the risk of surface water stagnation, and strengthening community empowerment toward sustainable environmental management. Therefore, community-based biopore implementation can serve as an effective strategy to support sustainable waste management at the village level.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major non-communicable disease that requires continuous promotional and preventive efforts. One community-based intervention involved hypertension education accompanied by a demonstration of chayote (Sechium edule) juice preparation as a non-pharmacological approach. This study aimed to evaluate the sustainability of the program and identify factors influencing its implementation six months after the intervention. The evaluation was conducted as part of a Community-Based Learning Program using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. It involved 23 participants in Sunggumanai Hamlet, Belapunranga Village, Gowa Regency. Data were collected through structured interviews and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that 69.6% of respondents no longer consumed chayote juice, although 82.6% reported that it was easy to prepare independently. These findings indicate that ease of implementation alone is insufficient to ensure sustained adoption. Therefore, appropriate participant selection, continuous follow-up, and stronger family involvement are needed to improve the sustainability of community-based health promotion programs.

Abstract

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is associated with various adverse skin effects, including erythema, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and skin cancer, highlighting the need for effective photoprotective agents. Growing interest in natural-based sunscreen products has encouraged the investigation of plant-derived compounds with potential UV-protective activity. Paliasa (Kleinhovia hospita Linn.) leaves contain bioactive constituents, particularly flavonoids and polyphenols, which may contribute to photoprotective effects. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of paliasa leaf extract as a natural sunscreen using an in vitro approach. Sunscreen activity was assessed by determining the Sun Protection Factor (SPF), percentage of erythema transmission (%Te), and percentage of pigmentation transmission (%Tp) at extract concentrations of 100, 300, 500, 700, and 900 ppm. The results showed a concentration-dependent increase in SPF values, ranging from 22.40 at 100 ppm to 42.62 at 900 ppm. The %Te values ranged from 0.64% to 0.27%, indicating a total-block category across all tested concentrations. Similarly, %Tp values ranged from 0.57% to 0.25% and were also classified within the total-block category. These findings demonstrate that paliasa leaf extract exhibits substantial in vitro photoprotective activity against both UVB- and UVA-associated effects. Therefore, K. hospita leaf extract has promising potential as a natural active ingredient for the development of sunscreen formulations.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with a steadily increasing prevalence worldwide and constitutes a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and coronary heart disease. Insufficient public knowledge regarding risk factors and preventive strategies remains a significant barrier to effective hypertension control. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a health education intervention in improving community knowledge regarding the use of family medicinal plants (Tanaman Obat Keluarga [TOGA]) as an alternative preventive approach for hypertension. The intervention was conducted using lectures, printed educational materials (pamphlets), and group discussions, involving a total of 31 respondents. The results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in participants’ knowledge of hypertension prevention through the utilization of TOGA following the educational intervention (p < 0.000). These findings underscore the crucial role of structured health education in strengthening non-communicable disease prevention efforts and enhancing community health outcomes.
