Abstract

Background: The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into education has the potential to enhance teaching and learning, especially in science education. However, the actual status and effectiveness of ICT use in schools remain uncertain in many regions, including Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the current status of ICT in the teaching and learning of Basic Science in upper basic schools within Anambra East LGA, identifying both its impacts and the challenges hindering its effective implementation. Method: A descriptive survey design was adopted. The sample consisted of 194 Basic Science teachers selected through simple random sampling from secondary schools in Anambra East. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations. The instruments were validated and tested for reliability. Data analysis employed a 4-point Likert scale, with a mean cut-off point of 2.5 for acceptance. Result: The findings revealed that ICT use enhances student engagement, promotes skill development, and supports personalized learning experiences. However, significant challenges were identified, including inadequate funding, limited teacher training, insufficient practical application time, and poor monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Conclusion: Despite its potential, the effective integration of ICT in Basic Science teaching is constrained by systemic and infrastructural challenges. Addressing these barriers is essential for maximizing ICT's benefits in education. Contribution: The study provides empirical insight into the current ICT landscape in Basic Science education at the upper basic school level in Anambra East. It highlights areas needing intervention and informs policymakers, educators, and stakeholders on strategic actions to enhance ICT adoption and effectiveness in science teaching.

Abstract

Background: The rapid advancement of technology has increased smartphone usage among school-aged children, potentially affecting their academic motivation and focus. This concern has prompted investigations into the relationship between smartphone use and learning behavior, particularly in elementary education. Objective: This study aims to determine whether limiting the use of smartphones has an impact on students’ learning interest in elementary schools. Method: The study employed an ex post facto research design. It was conducted at SDI Daar Al Iman in 2021, involving a sample of 31 students. Data were collected using scales measuring smartphone use restriction and learning interest, then analyzed using simple linear regression. Result: The t-test results showed a significance value of 0.000, which is less than the alpha level of 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). This indicates that limiting smartphone use has a significant effect on students’ interest in learning. Conclusion: The study concludes that restrictions on smartphone usage positively influence students' learning interests at school, suggesting that smartphone management can be an effective strategy to enhance academic engagement. Contribution: The findings provide practical and theoretical insights for teachers, educational practitioners, and future researchers. They highlight the importance of regulating smartphone use as a novel approach to support and sustain students’ learning motivation in the classroom.

Abstract

Background: Economic constraints have increasingly affected language education, particularly in the domain of French studies. Financial limitations may reduce access to essential learning resources, professional development, and language immersion opportunities, ultimately influencing program sustainability and student enrollment. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of economic constraints on the availability and affordability of French language resources, professional development for educators, access to language immersion experiences, and overall enrollment and program offerings. Method: A quantitative research design was employed, using survey data from 130 participants. The survey addressed issues such as textbook affordability, course availability, and access to educational technologies. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) to examine the influence of demographic variables (age, education level, gender) on the availability and affordability of resources. Result: The MANOVA results revealed statistically significant effects (p < 0.001), indicating that demographic factors significantly influence the availability and affordability of French language resources. Economic challenges have led to reduced access to textbooks, instructional materials, and educational technologies, while also limiting professional development opportunities for educators. Conclusion: Economic constraints negatively affect multiple dimensions of French language education, from resource access to educator support and program availability. Contribution: The findings contribute to the discourse on language education policy by highlighting the need for targeted funding and support mechanisms. This study offers valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers working to sustain and improve French language programs in financially constrained environments.
